2. From Robert Siy, Jr.
Senior Director, Human Resources Division
The Asian Development Bank
“As an Advisor with the ADB, Phillip made several important contributions to expand our leadership potential and
improve leadership effectiveness. He played a key role in the creation of ADB’s online learning program and developed
more than a dozen on courses focused on leadership development. Under Phillip’s guidance, we now offer a significant
number of free-standing courses that can be accessed by our staff around the world as well as several “blended
learning” courses that included both online and face-to-face workshops that are integrated to achieve a single set of
learning objectives. Some of the blended learning programs in developed by Phillip included: Change Management,
Emotional Intelligence, Situational Leadership, and Interpersonal Skills for Leaders.
Phillip introduced a number of important changes to ADB’s Assessment and Development Center (ADC) for high-
potential international staff which dramatically improved its effectiveness. He introduced several new executive
management assessment tools such as the MSCEIT for emotional intelligence, LSI for leadership development and the L/I
for improving individual leadership effectiveness and team performance.
As an extension to our Assessment and Development Program, Phillip established a coaching program that now includes
four internal and four external coaches. Initially this program focused on development coaching, by later Phillip
extended the coaching practice to transition coaching for recently promoted managers as well as coaching that focused
on improving leadership effectiveness
Phillip has made several successful presentations to the ADB’s Board and made numerous formal presentations to
various groups both inside and outside ADB. He was frequently asked to plan and facilitate executive retreats and team
building exercises and has helped to develop our Human Resources staff. Not only has he been a thought leader and
advocate, he has skillfully assisted us to implement useful changes at ADB.”
3. From Steven P. Groff
Vice-President, Southeast Asia and the Central
Operations Services
The Asian Development Bank
“Dr. Phillip Ash has worked at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for nearly four years beginning in June 2009. During this time
he has made important contributions in a number of areas critical to the success of the organization. One of his early projects
was the development of “MyeLearn.org” at ADB, for which he introduced more than a dozen online learning courses for
management.
He introduced a number of assessment tools for leaders that are now widely accepted at ADB as an integral part of our talent
management – thanks in large part to Phillip. He also established ADB’s successful executive coaching program.
Emotional intelligence (EQ) is another area in which Phillip has made important contributions to ADB. He has conducted more
than 60 MSCEIT tests and debriefing sessions across the institution in addition to recommending EQ development programs for
many senior staff at ADB. He has developed and conducted several EQ workshops during his tenure at ADB, in addition to
consulting with numerous managers related to developing their emotional intelligence.
Most recently, one of my Director Generals recommended I work with Phillip on the basis of a successful leadership
effectiveness program Phillip conducted in his operational area. Over the past six months Phillip has conducted a leadership
effectiveness program for me and my staff. This program began with a 360-degree assessment tool and was followed by
several one-on-one coaching sessions conducted by Phillip. As a result of these coaching sessions, we were able to gain a much
clearer appreciation of how our leadership styles and strategies affected relationships with our bosses, peers, and subordinates.
With Phillip’s help we were able to adjust our leadership strategies and behaviors to make our day-to-day interactions more
effective.
Recently, Phillip conducted a team-building retreat for my staff in which he introduced a powerful leadership tool called
“Thinking Partners.” As a result of Phillip’s effort and expertise, we are a more effective management team.
I was disappointed to learn that Phillip in leaving ADB and hope that we will have a chance to work together again in the
future. I enthusiastically endorse Phillip’s skills and effectiveness as an executive coach and leadership development
professional.”
