Complete Thoughts 
•Complete sentences 
1. Have a subject and verb 
2. Have a complete thought—they can stand alone 
•Sentences are a combination of complete and 
incomplete thoughts. 
1. The owl hooted. 
2. When the owl hooted. 
3. When the owl hooted, Antonio jumped.
Sentence Types 
Complete Thought 
Complete thought ,and complete thought. 
Dependent thought, complete thought.
Simple Sentences 
•A simple sentence 
1. Has one subject-verb combination 
2. Expresses one complete thought. 
•It may have a compound subject or a compound verb. 
• The winner could have chosen money or a car. 
• Lemons and limes taste sharp and tangy. 
• Sharon came to my house, and we watched movies 
together.
Practice 
Write one simple sentence in your notes. Label it with a star 
and the words Simple Sentence. 
Complete Thought 
*Simple Sentence: The students are writing a simple 
sentence.
Compound Sentences 
•Compound sentences 
1. Have two complete thoughts 
2. Are connected by a comma + joining word 
• Joining words are conjunctions that connect two equal 
ideas. 
• FANBOYS (For, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) 
• The cover is torn off this book, and there are pages 
missing.
Practice 
Write one compound sentence. Label it with a star and 
the words Compound Sentence. 
Complete thought ,FANBOY 
complete 
thought. 
*Compound Sentence:We are halfway through this 
lecture, but we have one more kind of sentence to study.
Complex Sentences 
•A complex sentence 
1. Has one independent idea (complete thought) and 
2. One dependent idea (incomplete thought) 
3. Connected by a dependent word + comma. 
•Dependent words are conjunctions that connect two unequal 
ideas (Brushup p 12). 
•Only put a comma after the incomplete thought. 
• If it thunders, our dog hides under the bed. 
• Our dog hides under the bed if it thunders.
Practice 
Write one complex sentence. Label it with a star and the 
words Complex Sentence. 
Dependent thought, complete thought. 
Complete thought dependent thought. 
*Complex Sentence: After you finish writing this sentence, 
please take out your classification rough draft.
