• The name comes from Latin hospes (host).
• A hospital, in the modern sense of the word,
is an institution for health care providing
patient treatment by specialized staff and
equipment, and often, but not always
providing for longer-term patient stays.
• Its historical meaning, until relatively recent
times, was "a place of hospitality".
CLASSIFICATION OF A HOSPITAL
(a) Depending upon the nature of the health facilities-
1.PRIMARY HEALTH CARE-
• It is a first level of care.
• Caters population of about 10,000.
2.SECONDARY HEALTH CARE-
• Special care is provided following referral from a primary health
professional.
• These are District level hospitals.
3.TERTIARY HEALTH CARE-
• Highly specialized consultative care to the patients referred from
secondary level facilities.
b)Depending upon the no. of beds

INTRODUCTION
• The form of a hospital is strongly influenced by
the choice of access and circulation routes.
• It is therefore necessary to decide earlier on
whether to choose a spine form with branching
sections (individual dept.)or whether circulation
will be radially outwards from a central core.
• Consideration will be given to future expansions.
• The vertical arrangement within a hospital
should be designed so that the functional areas :
care , treatment ,supply and disposal, access for
bedridden patients, service yard underground
garage ,stores ,administration , medical services
–can be connected and accessed most
efficiently.
FORM OF HOSPITALS
ZONING
Location of the building should be convenient
to the people it serve.i.e the public zone
should be in front. Effective zoning is required
:
• public zone ,clinical zone and staff zone.
• privacy and confidentiality are important
• security and supervision in the premises
will be necessary .
• emergency should have separate entrance.
Mortuary should be linked with service
road.
• Land must not be contaminated

PRINCIPLES OF A HOSPITAL DESIGN
 TOTAL AREA:
• The total area to be provided for a hospital
shall depend on availability of land, however an
area of 1 hectare for every 25 beds is
recommended.
 LANDSCAPING
• landscape elements such as open areas,
horticulture to increase the comfort conditions
inside the building and also in the surrounding
environment should be kept in view.
 SITE PLANNING:
• sensitive areas like wards, consulting &
treatment rooms and operation theaters are
placed away from the outdoor sources of
noise
 ORIENTATION
• The most suitable orientation for treatment and
operating rooms is between N-W and N-E.
• For nursing wards façades south to south-east is
favorable ; pleasant morning sun , minimal heat
built up little requirement for sun shading , mild
in the evenings .
• East and west facing rooms have comparatively
deeper sun penetration , through less winter sun
.
 STRUCTURAL GRID
• The constructional grid must provide a precise
guide as well as allowing for differentiation of
areas for the main functions, support functions
and vehicular traffic.
• The variation operations centers can be planned
most appropriately with a column grid spacing of
7.2m or 7.8m smaller construction grids are
problematic because large rooms (eg.operating
theatres) which must be free from internal
columns are more difficult to accommodate.

 The second: The Rehabilitation building which has less
traffic.
 The third: The Main Hospital Building approached by
patients, their visitors, the staff and doctors.
 The Service dock at the back & basement parking form the
fourth zone.
 Last the beautiful landscaping spread all over the site
P1

P3
LANDSCAPING:
Landscaping has been paid special attention here at FORTIS, Mohali,
using it as an element of beauty & at the same time to rejuvenate the
spirit of the patients.
A stepped landscaped courtyard between the two buildings of the
hospital enabling the patients to look down on the greenery, not making
them feel sick seems to be on the pattern of Mughal gardens.
Shapes like circular & other curvilinear forms :
Thus providing harmony & unity at site level.
Road edges marked with flowers and specific
landscaped areas earmarked by flower pots.

 DESIGN/CRITICAL ANALYSIS :
• A unique feature of this hospital is its usage of space.
• Separate entry for OPD, IPD, Emergency and Service zone : thus segregating the traffic flow.
• A flexible & modular approach imbibed to impart adaptability to the future changes & modifications.
• The OPD has been kept on the ground and first floor : thus providing easy accessibility for patients and their attendants.
• OPD placed next to diagnostic : easy access.
• The CSSD has been placed below the OT area hence direct connection via dumbwaiters.
• A very long well-landscaped courtyard has been placed in the centre, thus providing natural light in corridors.
• Waiting areas for all OPDs are provided in the form of small clusters.
• Vertical circulation in the form of stairs and lifts is separate for all blocks.
• The shafts provided for maintainance are narrow, thus leading to inconvenience.
• Administration is provided on the third floor which is too far from the scope of visitors.
• Basement enterance is on the rear side and cannot be approached from one chance.
• Reception and cafeteria in the i.P.D. Block are quite near to each other which causes lot of confusion near the entrance.

fortis hospital mohali case study

  • 1. • The name comes from Latin hospes (host). • A hospital, in the modern sense of the word, is an institution for health care providing patient treatment by specialized staff and equipment, and often, but not always providing for longer-term patient stays. • Its historical meaning, until relatively recent times, was "a place of hospitality". CLASSIFICATION OF A HOSPITAL (a) Depending upon the nature of the health facilities- 1.PRIMARY HEALTH CARE- • It is a first level of care. • Caters population of about 10,000. 2.SECONDARY HEALTH CARE- • Special care is provided following referral from a primary health professional. • These are District level hospitals. 3.TERTIARY HEALTH CARE- • Highly specialized consultative care to the patients referred from secondary level facilities. b)Depending upon the no. of beds CATEGORIES NO. OF BEDS A 25-50 B 51-100 C 101-300 D 301-500 E 501-750 INTRODUCTION • The form of a hospital is strongly influenced by the choice of access and circulation routes. • It is therefore necessary to decide earlier on whether to choose a spine form with branching sections (individual dept.)or whether circulation will be radially outwards from a central core. • Consideration will be given to future expansions. • The vertical arrangement within a hospital should be designed so that the functional areas : care , treatment ,supply and disposal, access for bedridden patients, service yard underground garage ,stores ,administration , medical services –can be connected and accessed most efficiently. FORM OF HOSPITALS ZONING Location of the building should be convenient to the people it serve.i.e the public zone should be in front. Effective zoning is required : • public zone ,clinical zone and staff zone. • privacy and confidentiality are important • security and supervision in the premises will be necessary . • emergency should have separate entrance. Mortuary should be linked with service road. • Land must not be contaminated 007 023 028 029
  • 2. PRINCIPLES OF A HOSPITAL DESIGN  TOTAL AREA: • The total area to be provided for a hospital shall depend on availability of land, however an area of 1 hectare for every 25 beds is recommended.  LANDSCAPING • landscape elements such as open areas, horticulture to increase the comfort conditions inside the building and also in the surrounding environment should be kept in view.  SITE PLANNING: • sensitive areas like wards, consulting & treatment rooms and operation theaters are placed away from the outdoor sources of noise  ORIENTATION • The most suitable orientation for treatment and operating rooms is between N-W and N-E. • For nursing wards façades south to south-east is favorable ; pleasant morning sun , minimal heat built up little requirement for sun shading , mild in the evenings . • East and west facing rooms have comparatively deeper sun penetration , through less winter sun .  STRUCTURAL GRID • The constructional grid must provide a precise guide as well as allowing for differentiation of areas for the main functions, support functions and vehicular traffic. • The variation operations centers can be planned most appropriately with a column grid spacing of 7.2m or 7.8m smaller construction grids are problematic because large rooms (eg.operating theatres) which must be free from internal columns are more difficult to accommodate. 007 023 028 029
