History of Horror
Horror movies are described as a motion picture, which includes an intense
feeling of insecurity, fear, shock and disgust at horrifical content or concepts.
Many horror movies focus their attention on a specific character who will belong
to one of two categories; 1/A character whose life has had some form of
change, and finds themselves in a situation where the supernatural or
physical element of danger affect their life or 2/The character we follow is
the protagonist and causes havoc to other members of society.
The majority of feature films are, however based on the supernatural or
speculative fiction; something which is out of the ordinary or not human.
Examples of this include The Exorcist, The Ring and Paranormal Activity.
Horror films are also highly popular with the gothic following, this spawned after
the first true “horrifying” feature called The Castle of Otranto which contained
many supernatural points throughout the film, this started a craze of what we
call today the gothic mode of writing. This style of writing was the norm for half
a century.
The whole point to a horror film is to purposely get a negative reaction from the
audience such as fear or disgust, often with the inclusion of scenes, which are
intended to startle the audience.
Horror films often deal with the viewer's nightmares, hidden fears, revulsions
and terror of the unknown. Plots within the horror genre often involve the
intrusion of an evil force, event, or personage, commonly of supernatural origin,
into the everyday world. Prevalent elements include ghosts, aliens, vampires,
werewolves, curses, satanism, demons, gore, torture, vicious animals, monsters,
zombies, cannibals, and serial killers. Conversely, movies about the supernatural
are not necessarily always horrific.
