Insitutional context
1. Themes such as Demonic powers, witchcraft and afterlife
are used to create more of a supernatural atmosphere
than a horror with gruesome killing.
Supernatural Horror is the use of tools or themes, which
goes against the ‘natural world.’ This is when strange thing
happen that no one can explain. This requires an
individual have unimaginable supernatural powers that
others cannot posses.
2. The genre took root from religious traditions that
occasionally have something to do with death, afterlife
and evil that are manifested from the devil himself. This
was portrayed in tales of witches, vampires, ghost and
werewolves.
The very first film that took on this genre was a film called
‘le manoir du diable’ an 1896 short silent French film
directed by Georges Méliès. It also came out in America as
the ‘Devil's Castle’ and in UK as the Haunted Castle.
The hybrid genre of ‘supernatural’ and ‘horror’ became
extremely popular because they both worked well. 2005
film ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose’ was a supernatural
horror however later films one may argue that 2009
‘Paranormal Activity’ is a heavy based supernatural film.
