INTRODUCTION
WHAT IS BIOGAS BASED COLD STORAGE?
• Biogas based cold storage is a VAM based cold storage
where the vapour generation is done by the burning bio
gas through a boiler.

• Boiler :- The boiler (or hot water generator) is used to
generate hot water which is used to heat up the compressors.
• Compressors :-The CHILL system has two compressors that
alternate in between the suction and regeneration process.
• .
• Condenser :-The condenser is a shell-and-tube heat-exchanger
used to condense the refrigerant released from the regenerator
(compressor).
• Evaporator :- The evaporator is either a blower or a bulk-milk
chiller.

WORKING PRINCIPLE & DESIGN(Con.)
• De-Superheater :- The de-superheater is a small heat-exchanger
connected in between the compressors and condenser.
• Valves :- Two types of valves is used one is Solenoid Valves
and an other one is Non-Return valves.
• Pumps :- Pumps are used to circulate cold water and hot water
into the heat-exchangers. Each of the pump used is described
below along with photograph.
• Cooling Tower :- Cooling tower is used to cool down the
ambient water which exits from the compressors and
condenser.

NEED TO RUN A VAM
• Heat Source :- Waste heat from the exhaust of a gas turbine, or
from the exhaust and water jackets of a reciprocating engine is
recovered for use through heat exchangers.
•
• Refrigent :- Vapor absorption systems work with non-CFC
refrigerants such as water or ammonia.
•
• Absorbent :-Absorbent is a material that has great affinity with
water.

CONVENTIONAL REFRIGERANTS
• The chlorofluorocarbons(CFCs) and hydrochloroflurocarbons
(HCFCs) are referred to as ozone depleting substances
(ODS).
• An ODS molecule has potential to destroy ozone molecules
during its entire lifetime.
• Ozone is a gas composed of three bonded oxygen atoms
(O3).In the Earth’s atmosphere, ozone is formed from
molecular oxygen (O2) in the reactions initiated by the UV
light.
• The ozone layer encircles the stratosphere at approximately
10 km above ground level.

ECOFRIENDLY REFRIGERANTS
• Ammonia (NH3) is a well-known refrigerant, particularly
applicable in large, industrial plants where its advantages can be
fully utilized without compromising safety.
• Ammonia is a highly efficient refrigerant.
• Due to the toxicity and flammability of ammonia, installations
using ammonia are governed by national regulations.
• Ammonia is a natural refrigerant. It has zero ODP and zero GWP.
In combination with its efficiency, it is one of the most
environmentally friendly refrigerants.
