Dr M M Gondwe (DA) to ask the Minister of Public Service and Administration:
What (a) is the total number of public service employees who have taken leave due to
ill-health and incapacity since the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, (b) is the
breakdown of this number in terms of (i) each national and/or (ii) provincial department
and (iii) the duration of leave taken and (c) are the cost implications of the leave for

REPLY:
(a) Since the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, i.e. 28 March 2020 to 31 October
2021 (i.e. a 19 month period) a total number of 881 152 employees have
utilised normal sick leave and incapacity leave, respectively.
(b) The above-mentioned number is broken down by (i) each national and (ii)
provincial department and (iii) the duration of the leave taken (the duration is
expressed as an average per department as the actual duration varies between
employees). Refer to the tables at Annexures A and B for the break down in
respect of normal sick leave and incapacity leave, respectively.
(c) The total cost of the Public Service in respect of the normal sick leave and
incapacity leave for the period in point amounts to R14 346 032 476.
