This presentation gives an overview of what makes issue of Sanitary Waste Management and E waste Management compelling and what actionable solutions we have for managing these wastes.
5. WHY THIS SESSION?
GOAL:
1. Sensitize audience of the scope of
issue of sanitary waste
2. Give actionable solutions toward
managing it at an individual level
7. WHAT IS SANITARY WASTE?
Used diapers
Sanitary towels
Napkins
Condoms, tampons
Incontinence sheets and any other similar
waste
Definition as per Rule 3(41) of SWM Rules,
2016

9. WHY SHOULD WE BE BOTHERED?
EXAMPLE OF MENSTRUAL WASTE
A woman could use up to 10,000 sanitary pads
from menarche to menopause. (Source: HT, 2021)
Annual menstrual waste of a whopping 113,000
tonnes, estimates Toxic Links, an environmental
NGO
Each pad contains plastic which is equivalent to
around 4 plastic bags. (Source: Newindianexpress,
2021)
Non-organic sanitary pad takes up to 250-800
years to decompose (Source: Newindianexpress,
2021)
Waste handlers are forced to work in unhygienic
conditions, handling sanitary waste without
adequate PPE.

12. HOW TO MANAGE SANITARY WASTE
CORRECTLY – DISPOSE CORRECTLY
Rule (4)(b) of SWM Rules 2016:
Wrap securely the used sanitary waste
like diapers, sanitary pads etc., in the
pouches provided by the
manufacturers or brand owners of
these products or in a suitable
wrapping material as instructed by
the local authorities and shall place
the same in the bin meant for dry
waste or non- bio-degradable waste;
Segregation of this form is the first step.
13. 1.Burning in pits (last option)
1.Composting – Only of cotton
napkins, tissues (not for
commercial napkins)
1.Buried deep in backyard (for
pads made of natural fibres; in
rural or remote areas)

1.Landfilling – Soil, water, air
pollution; unhygienic,

India, to date. So what can we
do? Keep exploring options…

Padcare Labs, 2018
…Disinfect and shred used sanitary napkins, pass it through a
solution to deactivate the super absorbent polymer and separate
the components into recyclable cellulose that could be used in the
packaging industry, or to manufacture vases, paver blocks, what
have you. In 20 minutes, this machine can break down 50 pads.

ADVERSE IMPACT
When it is thrown in landfills, the chemicals seep in
the ground water affecting both land and sea
animals
Has hazardous substances such as polychlorinated
biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs),
mercury, polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDEs),
and brominated flame retardants (BFRs)
E-waste releases harmful chemicals, such as lead,
on burning, which adversely impacts human blood,
kidney and the peripheral nervous system; also has

37. HOW CAN WE MANAGE E-WASTE
BETTER?

avoid overcharging; getting them repaired as
needed
Reusing still-functioning electronic equipment
by donating or selling it to someone
Getting multi-purpose devices if possible to
reduce number of e-products bought
Look out for exchange offers

BETTER? RECYCLE

Editor's Notes
Hi everyone, I am really happy to be with you in this Session discussing two issues of importance…Which two issues? No points for guessing that they are related to waste management. And are we saying waste management is important? Well, YES…because we can’t wish away waste, which in its current scale is a biproduct of our modern lives. So what can you and me do about it?…either ignore waste and its impact on our lives or TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. And the very fact that you all squeezed an hour or little less from your lives for this session proves that the you are in the second category. On this happy note, lets start!
Am I a successful composter yet…unfortunately, NO. am I a committed composter? Yes, for sure. but this also speaks volumes that it is NOT a one-day process, right or wrong process…
It’s a taboo topic…something everyone gets uncomfortable talking…be it body fluids and solids, they all are perfectly normal wastes from a normal human body. While with time and knowledge, some level of comfort has set in. But still stigmas exist in our society. And due to this, there is lack of open conversation. As a result, issues are detected late and solutions come much later. So today, we will touch upon the topic. Women are at the core of this topic. But men, too need to be in this conversation to understand the situation and come up with solutions for the benefit of families and society at large.
Are we in the right frame to get started on this session? Ask people who have given composting a try but struggled?
Anyone successful with composting
Who are yet to give it a try?
Theory is important to give structure to our actions…

I have to resist the temptation of sharing theory…so I need your help to keep it practical…keep asking your questions. What stops you from composting or what is making you struggle?
Benefit is readily- available N from the compost compared to aerobic, or else no need of management, yet fertilized garden bed after 7-8 months; best for garden waste or one-time smelly kitchen waste, with no sign of composting over ground
Have you heard about Bokashi? Benefit is readily- available N from the compost

It’s a composting special session…3rd in the series of 5-6 sessions…in which we will try to cover the all dimensions of this topic.
Two things make this session very relevant – One is the audience, you being the key user base of EEE; and secondly, COVID pandemic which resulted in WFH and consequently, enhanced use of EEE at an individual level. More use means more wearing off and more waste…which waste are we talking of? WEEE or simply, e-waste.
Theory is important to give structure to our actions…

Theory is important to give structure to our actions…
Theory is important to give structure to our actions…
Three equally critical reasons…
First reason is wet waste management…what happens if waste is mismanaged was discussed in detail in first session of this series…how much of household waste is wet waste?
Theory is important to give structure to our actions…
Three things:
E waste is already huge in our country and growing
Very little is formally recycled
Improper recycling and disposal can cause serious health hazards
Show by arrows.
So, if we are composting, we are actually reducing half of our contribution to above problems, which is just amazing, isn’t it? Imagine half of the waste of our world simply gone? That’s the reason why we need to focus on composting.

This probably you have heard of ….but do you know, It takes of soil in so many way – be its water retention, or nutrient retention or stability or aeration or temperature…it manages the soil really well, and then add more nutrients, not only for plants and germinating seeds but also for useful microbes and worms
