3. E-WASTE MANAGEMENT
• E-waste is any electrical or electronic
equipment that’s been discarded. This
includes working and broken items that are
thrown in the garbage or donated to a charity
reseller like Goodwill. Often, if the item goes
unsold in the store, it will be thrown away. E-
waste is particularly dangerous due to toxic
chemicals that naturally leach from the metals
inside when buried.
4. IMPORTANT CONCERN OF
DISCARDING e-waste
• While discarding e-waste u should be careful
about the data stored in discarded storage
devices
• It’s very important that you delete the data
stored in discarded devices because it can be
misused by anyone
5. The improper disposal of electronic
products leads to the possibility of
damaging the environment. As more e-
Waste is placed in landfills, exposure to
environmental toxins is likely to increase,
resulting in elevated risks of cancer and
developmental and neurological
disorders.
6. E-WASTE DISPOSAL PROCESS
• E – waste is categorized by the government of
India under the broad class of hazardous waste
within e- waste there are several categories such
as large and small household appliances ,electric
and electronic toys etc
• Composition of e-waste : electric and electronic
equipment contains metallic and non metallic
elements alloys and compounds such as copper,
aluminum, gold , silver, nickel ,iron etc.
7. Procedure for recycling and recovery
Dismantling : removal of part containing
dangerous substance (CFC , Hg switches, PCB)
Removal of easily accessible parts containing
valuable substance(cable containing copper
,steel ,iron etc.
Segregation of ferrous metal ,non ferrous metal
and plastic : this separation is normally done in
a shredder process(The shredding process
produces raw material to be re-introduced into
manufacturing, as well as finished products )
8. Refurbishment and reuse : refurbishment and reuse of e-
waste has potential for those used electrical and electronic
equipments which can be easily refurbished to put to its
original use .
Recycling/disposal of valuable materials : ferrous metals in
electrical are furnaces ,non – ferrous metal in smelting plant
,precious and metals in separating works.
Treatment/disposal of dangerous material and waste :
shredder light fraction is disposed off in landfill sites or
sometimes expensive , chlorofluoro- carbons are treated
thermally , printed circuit board (PCB) is disposed off in
underground storages ,mercury is often recycled or disposed
off in underground landfill sites.
9. Benefits of e- waste recycling
• It protects the environment. Recycling e-waste
can keep a range of harmful materials out of
the environment. ...
• It reduces business costs. ...
• It supports non-renewable recycling. ...
• It shows your eco-friendly credentials. ...
• It's super easy to recycle e-waste.
• Saves landfill space
