Plastic surgery has origins in ancient India dating back 2500 years, as described in early medical texts like the Atharva Veda and Sushruta Samhita. Sushruta is considered the father of plastic surgery in India. The Sushruta Samhita, written in 600 BC, describes various reconstructive procedures like rhinoplasty and skin grafts. It provides details of over 300 surgical procedures and 120 medicinal plants. Taxila in ancient India was a major center of medical learning and is where Sushruta and Charaka, contributors to early Indian medicine, may have studied. The techniques described in ancient Indian texts still form the basis of modern plastic and reconstructive surgery practices.

In the history of Ayurveda, Sushruta stands before Caraka. He practically applied Vaidika culture for treatment. His treatise translated into nine foreign languages apart from various Indian languages like Hindi, Bengali, Malayalam, etc., Sushruta is the most celebrated physician and surgeon in India. Though he practiced during the 5th century BC, many of his contributions to medicine and surgery preceded similar discoveries in the western world. Sushruta devotes a complete volume of his experiences to ophthalmologic diseases. In the Uttara Tantram, Sushruta enumerates a sophisticated classification of eye diseases complete with signs, symptoms, prognosis, and medical/surgical interventions. In particular, Sushruta describes what may have been the first extracapsular cataract surgery using a sharply pointed instrument with a handle fashioned into a trough. His ability to manage many common eye conditions of the time with limited diagnostic aids is a testament to his virtuosity.

Surgery is the branch of medicine that deals with the physical manipulation of a bodily structure to diagnose, prevent, or cure an ailment.
Ambroise Paré, a 16th-century French surgeon, stated that to perform surgery is, "To eliminate that which is superfluous, restore that which has been dislocated, separate that which has been united, join that which has been divided and repair the defects of nature.“
We as Indians have failed to understand the deep and real meaning of the holy Vedas and Hindu culture texts written by the great sages and our ancestors. Psychologically, if we look, any knowledge from our ancient times can be easily understood by adding some personal relevance around the subject to show it through storytelling, making it interesting and easy for the listener to remember. However, this concept given by our sages was not properly adopted by future generations, took only symbolic meaning without understanding it scientifically and due to lack of understanding of the original deep knowledge, a great blow was inflicted on the social, economic and spiritual spheres. Every knowledge, literature, concept written as some message is actually a deep scientific and technical concept, information about composition, medicine and surgery, advice on physical, mental and social health, nurturing and balancing of environment, life management and work management, political and economic considerations. The main objective was to create a socially, economically, spiritually healthy society so that the country and the world would progress at the same time with the theme “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”.
Advances in science and technology are the main reason for the growth of human civilization. India has been contributing in the field of science and technology since ancient times. Even today what we call “traditional knowledge” is actually based on scientific reasoning.
Veer Savarkar wanted, “Not only a particular caste, but everyone should raise the standard of living by developing modern technology using Vedic literature”.
Lokmanya Tilak had a very in-depth study of Vedic knowledge, a treatise can be written on his knowledge.
Hindu ancestors, sages put this great knowledge not only on paper but at that time with great skill and design many concepts were practically implemented on the ground. We can see various temples, metalwork, architectural beauty, mathematics, surgical methods….
Physics
The German physicist Werner Heisenberg once said … “About Indian philosophy, some of the ideas of quantum physics that seemed so crazy suddenly became more meaningful”.
The concepts of atoms, molecules and substances can be traced back to the Vedic age. Moreover, the concepts of astronomy, metaphysics and spirituality are described in the Rig Veda, the ancient Hindu scriptures of the Vedic period.
Why have Indians built thousands, so incredibly architecturally amazing temples around the world? Were they rich enough to spend money on this venture?
Yes, their eternal Sanatan Hindu culture gave them wisdom, intelligence, hard work, spirituality and most importantly progress in the field of research, the purpose behind which was to make humanity prosperous and peaceful.
The German philosopher Gottfried von Herder once said, “The origin of mankind can be traced back to India where the human mind got its first shape of wisdom and virtue.”These copper plates absoBS
Ayurveda is one of the oldest traditional systems of medicine that has survived and flourished from ages till date. Ayurveda is knowledge system dealing with what is required to maintain health and to cure diseases. The basic theories of Ayurveda are the Panchamahabhuta, Tridosha, Saptadhatus, Trimalas etc. Understanding and practices of Ayurveda are based on these theories. In an age where validity of concepts is judged by their scientific relevance, establishing the scientific validity of basic concepts is atmost important. It requires translating concepts and their practical application. There are many approaches still to be explored by the Researchers, practitioners, experts in the field of Ayurveda to keep the traditional system alive and contributing to its growth in the future. However, due to many barriers such as lack of literature sources in different languages and insufficiency of awareness about the basic principles, there is a lacuna of exchange of information from the system around the globe. In this work we have made an attempt to put forth the basic principles of doctrines of Ayurveda to contribute to the society. Welcome to the new Mizzima Weekly !
Mizzima Media Group is pleased to announce the relaunch of Mizzima Weekly. Mizzima is dedicated to helping our readers and viewers keep up to date on the latest developments in Myanmar and related to Myanmar by offering analysis and insight into the subjects that matter. Our websites and our social media channels provide readers and viewers with up-to-the-minute and up-to-date news, which we don’t necessarily need to replicate in our Mizzima Weekly magazine. But where we see a gap is in providing more analysis, insight and in-depth coverage of Myanmar, that is of particular interest to a range of readers.
In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.

◦ The word Plastic is derived from Greek word "Plasticos" which means "to
form "or " to mould ".
◦ According to Cambridge Dictionary, Plastic Surgery is
"a medical operation to bring a damaged area of skin, and
sometimes bone, back to its usual appearance, or to improve a
person's appearance" .

2. Last section (Uttaratantra)
7. Cont..

of hundreds of medicinal plants, and instructions for performing scores of
surgical procedures - including three types of skin grafts and
reconstruction of the nose.

regarded as "Golden Age of Surgery".
8. In Sushruta Samhita he describes the free-graft
rhinoplasty as follows:
"The portion of the nose to be coveredshould be first measured with a leaf. Then, a piece
of skin of the required size should be dissected from the living skin of the cheek, and
turned back to cover the nose, keeping a small pedicleattached to the cheek. The part of
the nose to which the skin is to be attached should be made raw, by cutting the nasal
stump with a knife. The physicianthen should place the skin on the nose and stitch the two
parts swiftly, keeping the skin properly elevated, by inserting two tubes of the castor-oil
plant in the position of the nostrils, so that the new nose has proper shape. The skin thus
properly adjusted, it should then be sprinkled with a powder of liquorice, red sandal-wood,
and barberry plant. Finally, it should be coveredwith cotton, and clean sesame oil should be
