2. Introduction
What Does ADAS Stand For?
• Advanced Driver Assistance Systems support drivers in certain situations to increase
convenience, safety and cost-efficiency
• This reduces both operating costs and emissions and additionally lowers the risk of accidents
• Study shows that due to road accidents around 1.2 million deaths are taking place around the
world. Hence pedestrian as well as driver safety is main concern for automakers
• ADAS are systems to help the driver in the driving process. Driver assistance system enables
safe, relaxed driving, based on intelligent sensor technology
1. To enhance active safety of a vehicle.
2. To reduce the number of accidents.
3. To make driving safer.
4. To alert the driver to potential problems.
5. To improve vehicle stability
Objective
3. Systems Under ADAS
• Adaptive Cruise control
• Emergency Brake Assist
• active lane assist
• Collision avoidance assist
• Cross traffic assist rear
• Blind Spot Detection
• Emergency assist
• Night vision assist
• Park assist
• High-beam assist
• Hill Hold assist
4. Advanced driver assistance systems – safety effects known
Existing ADAS and those under development – safety effects unknown
• Seat Belt Reminders In All Seating Positions In New Cars
• Electronic Stability Control
• Alcohol Interlocks For Repeat Offenders And Fleet Drivers
• Anti-lock Braking For Motorcycles
• Event And Journey Data
• Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Recorders
• Smart keys for young drivers and eCall
• eLicence
• Most of the devices for improvement of braking and handling affect driver behavior, and the
questions of driver acceptance
• Risk compensation and driver reaction, when the system is activated, are important
• Emergency Brake Assist is often cited as a safety related ADAS, Prospective studies have
indicated some benefits, while a study of real accidents has indicated some benefit when
Emergency Brake Assist is combined with other measures
• Collision Avoidance systems offer future promise and are receiving much attention though the
safety effects are yet unknown
5. Systems under ADAS
1) Adaptive Cruise Control
2) Adaptive Headlights
3) Lane Departure Systems
6. 4) Blind Spot information Systems

Radar
360-degree camera
Ultra Sound Sensors
10. Government Initiatives
1) CARS 21
CARS 21 = Competitive Automotive Regulatory System for the 21st Century
= High Level Group representing all key stakeholders of the European automotive sector, both
authorities and industry
= formulating mid‐term policy recommendations for a competitive automotive industry and
sustainable growth
= originally set‐up in 2005
= re‐launched in 2010 to develop a strategic vision for the horizon 2020
2) eSafety
The eSafety Initiative launched in 2002 was a joint initiative of the European Commission,
industry and other stakeholders.
3) Automated Driving Systems 2.0
Release of automated driving system 2.0 by September 2017 in US
Level 2 and 3 automation is to be made mandatory.
11. 1. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) will play an important role in
providing assistance to drivers who get distracted while driving and have
poor peripheral vision.
2. The drivers will be alerted about the potential problems well in
advanced.
3. This system is useful for new drivers and will help to build confidence
in them.
4. It may also reduce fatigue and stresses of a driver.
5. The acceptance of this system will vary from person to person because
some people may find the system over conscious.
Conclusion
