The pure low-cost players (XL Airways,
Norwegian Airlines…) entered the long-haul
market in the early 90s. In recent years,
subsidiaries of ‘regular airlines’ have joined
this market too (IAG has introduced Level,
Groupe Dubreuil has launched FrenchBee…).

The development of low-cost airlines entering
the long-haul market has been boosted due to the
emergence of new aircraft models such as the A321
Neo. Such aircrafts have a larger flight range and
more efficient fuel consumption technologies.
The most popular destinations are the United
States and the Caribbean (Cuba, Guadalupe,
Martinique and Dominican Republic). Asia is
mainly served by Eurowings and Norwegian
Airlines. The Indian Ocean is mainly served by
French Bee, XL Airways flies to Réunion Island
and Eurowings focusses on Mauritius.
