ENC 1143: WRITING WITH EVIDENCE AND STYLE
12/05/2021
OVERVIEW OF ENC 1143
ENC 1143 is an English class provided by the University of North Florida. The overarching goal for students within
this course is to be able to address audiences and purposes and to apply relevant and credible evidence from
reliable sources within their writing. It is helpful to have a topic of interest that is relatable to your major since
most of the writing assignments will involve gaining deeper insight into that specific topic. UNF library is a vital
resource for every student who wants to succeed in this class. This online database provides various relevant and
peer-reviewed sources necessary for researching a subject. There are four topics within this course: academic
discourse, evidence-based writing, synthesis writing, and writing about change. At the end of each module, there
is a writing assignment in which students will apply what they have learned to develop their understanding of a
topic of interest.
ACADEMIC DISCOURSE
- Academic discourse refers to “the ways of
thinking and using language which exist in the
academy” (Hyland, 2009).
In other words, academic discourse describes the way
students, teacher, and peers communicate in a classroom
setting.
- Academic discourse needs to be taught, modeled
and recognized by both teachers and students.
- Several examples of academic discourse include
presentations, debates, listening, writings, peer
reviews.
WHY IS ACADEMIC DISCOURSE IMPORTANT?
In a classroom, academic discourse encourages students to engage with the lessons they are learning. A student
might use academic discourse to ask his or her instructor a question about a lecture. Another example of
academic discourse within a classroom is when students engage in a discussion or debate about a topic. By being
involved in a classroom, students are more likely to have a throughout understanding of the lessons. The
significance of academic discourse also extends outside of a classroom setting. In life, many complex social
activities require efficient communication. Understanding academic discourse allows students to communicate
effectively, which is vital for their future.
EVIDENCE-BASED WRITING
- A form of writing in which writers develop their arguments based on evidences and use various forms of evidence
to support their claims.
- Academic discourse recognizes nine types of evidence: facts, statistics, examples, authorities, scenarios,
anecdotes, case studies, textual evidence, and visuals.
- Authors can use evidence to support their argument in various way such as introducing topic, supporting claims,
developing ethos, providing historical contexts, etc.
- A persuasive claim requires supports from effective evidence, which must come from a reliable source. Thus,
evidence-based writing focuses critically on the writer’s researching plan and skills.
- It is critical to establish a strong connection between evidence and the main argument. A good evidence must
make the readers think about the topic.
IMPORTANCE OF EVIDENCE-BASED WRITING
Individuals have the right to express their thinking, but not everyone shares the same opinion. Thus, there are
always opposing views on almost any social issue. An argument to a topic is different from an answer to a
question since there is no correct or incorrect argument. People do not look for a “right” argument, but rather a
persuasive one. Evidence-based writing focuses on how the writers research and apply their evidence in their
papers. Good evidence can raise the authors’ credibility. Credible and trustworthy writers can gain support from
the readers for their unpopular claims. This form of writing is also beneficial for students. While researching for
information, students can develop a deeper insight into their research topic. This allows students to make a strong
and persuasive argument.
SYNTHESIS WRITING
- In synthesis writing, writers “put together the ideas and findings of multiple sources in order to make an overall
point” (McCombes, 2020).
+ Basically, writers look for similarities and differences between the sources that they are studying for their research.
- The aim of synthesis writing is to generate a “discussion” about a particular theme based on the information
from various sources.
- These “discussions” within the synthesis writing should answer the question from the thesis statement.
- It is a good idea to have a summary for each source before writing.
WHAT IS IMPORTANT ABOUT SYNTHESIS WRITING?
No matter how good a writer is, it is difficult if not impossible for the readers to fully understand a topic by
studying it from the writer’s perspective. By creating a discussion among different sources, the audience can
understand both sides of an argument, which is an effective way to study anything. A good synthesis writing
indicates that the writers fully understand their research topics. Therefore, synthesis writing can be an
opportunity for writers to raise their credibility.
WRITING ABOUT CHANGE
- The main theme of ENC 1143 is about “change”. Therefore, writing about change is something to keep in mind
throughout the course.
- There is no specific assignment for this module. However, in other writing assignments, students are expected to
address in their paper about how their researches can lead to a change within society.
- The world constantly changes as every second passes. Therefore, the main objective for all student within this
course is to utilize all their writing skills and knowledge to motivate their real audience to act in a real world.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Here are several key takeaways to be successful in ENC 1143:
- Time management: this is not only a vital skill in school but also in any real-life scenario. Time is precious and no
one can get back the time that has passed. Therefore, it is crucial to be organizing and keep track of all the
upcoming deadlines.
- Resources: UNF online library and writing tutor center are two important resources that every student should at
least utilize once throughout the course. The UNF library provides students quick access to many relevant and
peer-reviewed sources for their writing assignments. The writing tutor center is an ideal place to visit before every
deadline of the writing assignments.
- Participation: students need to try their best to engage in all discussions and other activities. Good participation
allows student to have a deep and throughout understanding of a subject.
