Presented by:

Oncology Nurse Navigator
Northside Hospital Cancer Institute

2. Our Book Title:
Oncology Nurse Navigation:
Delivering Patient-Centered Care Across the Continuum
Edited by:
Karyl Blaseg, MSM, RN, OCN
Penny Daugherty, RN, MS, OCN
Kathleen Gamblin, BSN, RN, OCN
3. Objectives
This presentation is designed to:
• Describe the dynamic experience of 3 oncology nurses who connected to
create a practical and living workbook for oncology nurse navigators with the
support and guidance of ONS
• Our team goal was to provide the reader with a multifaceted patient centered
approach to navigation care of cancer patients via a comprehensive overview
of navigation and its evolution into oncology nursing with patients and their
many different disease site-specific needs in their individual journey
• We recruited several experienced oncology nurse navigators (ONN’s) across
the country to contribute their individual experience and methodology for
assessment, intervention and the provision of therapeutic strategies as well as
the formulation of a viable patient/nurse navigator dialogue
4. A wee little seed was planted by
3 friends on their way to
church at Congress, 2010:
Barb Sigler, Marty Polovich and I
thought to create a little
book to be titled:
“Scenarios In Navigation”
(stapled binding)
5. This is the wonderful story
of how that little seed
was nurtured into a
bountiful tree of
valuable information for
nurse navigators to
enjoy and enhance the
care of their patients.
6. • As Oncology Nurse
Navigation programs
blossomed nationwide ONS
research demonstrated the
need for a comprehensive
textbook encompassing the
variegated colors and styles
that each program was built
upon
• (no more little book with that
stapled binding…)
7. • Realizing that I was now in unchartered waters I reached out to:
Kathleen Gamblin – many years experience as a thoracic
nurse navigator and now Coordinator/Program developer of
Northside Hospital Cancer Institute Navigation initiative
and
Karyl Blaseg – also many years experience as an oncology
nurse navigator and Manager of Cancer Programs of the
Billings Clinic in Montana which has been a prototype for
many programs
THEY SAID YES and we were the textbook team!!!!!
8. Karyl Blaseg stepped up as our Lead Editor and her
exquisite attention to every detail guided our path to
consistence of quality and evidence-based
expression……….
Thank you Karyl!
9. • Our team was initially supported and nurtured by Barb Sigler,
former Director Of ONS Publishing Division ~ who then retired
and turned the project over to our wonderful coach, mentor
and always patient ear, John Zaphyr, and the rest of the
National ONS team, Judy Holmes and Managing Editor, Lisa
George.
