Electrical Hazards And Safety By Kevin Burke
Electrical Hazards and Safety
Kevin Burke
1.INTRODUCTION
Everywhere nowadays there is electricity and devices that rely on electricity. Society is driven by the need for energy and "electricity generating plants
now consume two–fifths of U.S. energy from all sources, including about 90% of America's coal and nearly 30% of its natural gas" (http:/
/needtoknow.nas.edu/energy/energy–sources/electricity/). The world today would not be nearly as advanced had it not been for the increased use of
electricity. Electricity has so many uses they are seemingly innumerable, from use in air conditioners to cool people down. To making sure that
individuals can see in everyday life with the use of lighting, the list could go on forever. However with this massive increase in electricity use there
are also very drastic safety precautions that must be followed to ensure safe use of electrical products. Safety is a huge part of using electricity
because having even a low voltage travel through the human body can kill someone. From a very young age it is instilled that electricity is not
something to play with and that adults should make sure an activity is safe.
Safety is not only important for humans but also for the infrastructure of the electrical components. People should ensure that they use surge protector
and all of their wires are safe and not stripped. This will guarantee safety for the products in their homes. It is crucial that anything that has

Electrical grounding best practices
A good grounding system should provide the maximum safety from contact, electrical system faults and lightening. For a grounding system to perform
efficiently over long periods of time, it should be designed and installed properly using reliable materials and proven techniques.
Grounding is important for three main reasons;
Safety to people
Protection of equipment and building which may come into contact with the live wires or systems.
Electrical noise reduction
The electrical ground provides a current return path to the earth mass. The earth is usually considered to be an electrically neutral body with equal
number of positive and negative charges which are distributed *** throughout the earth and any given time.**** RD
The effectiveness of the grounding system depends on the individual components. Some of the factors to consider include
The grounding conductors : that connects noncurrent carrying metal parts to raceways, enclosures, etc

Workplace Safety : Safety And Safety
Organizational Safety Program Safety in the workplace has become a major focus on many organizations due to many accidents and deaths. When
employees enter their place of work they expect to work in a safe environment in which they can work with our anything to worry about. As it is
known that some workplaces are safer than others. Workplace safety is a priority in for most workplaces that is why employers care about
employee's safety. Workplace safety is a kind of management responsibility in places of employment that includes health and safety of workers. In
order to provide workers with safety and health, managers focus on safety that can include such elements as: management leadership and obligation;
worker involving accountability; ensuring the work is carried out safely and effectively; different safety plans, programs and policies, processes,
procedures, and practices; safety inspections for workplace hazards; safety goals, objectives and program audits; safety tracking and metrics;
identification of hazards and control; safety education, training and communications. Talking about workplace safety, it is necessary to mention health
and safety hazards. According to definition of Rajagopal J., "a 'hazard' is something that in itself may cause harm or injury." (Rajagopal,
2009).Workplace hazards include moving parts of machinery, flammable or toxic substances and lifting heavy things. Also hazards can be included in
slippery floors, electric energy, working at heights

Denver Electrical Safety
Denver is a well–established city that has many old homes. Although there are plenty of new people in Denver, there are many who have lived here
their whole lives. Perhaps even in the same home. Older homes are known for having electrical issues. Whether that be a noticeable issue with the
electrical, not enough outlets or out of code outlets; either way any electrical issue is annoying and sometimes even dangerous. One way to protect
your home and family from electrical injuries or damages is to have the correct outlets installed. Electrical outlets do much more than just provide
electricity. Depending on the type of electrical outlet you have in your home, it could be a life saving device. There are several different types of
electrical outlets...show more content...
That is because these outlets have a feature that allows them to shut off power quickly when it detects an electrical danger. Common places that you
will see GFCI's are in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, garages and outside. Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter AFCI's are used to reduce the risk of
electrical fires. They work by interrupting power when an arc fault occurs. An arc fault is when a high–power discharge of electricity occurs between
two wires. This creates heat which can then turn into a fire. These are common when there are faulty connections in the home due to corrosion or poor
electrical installation. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has estimated that over 50% of the electrical fires that occur each year could be
prevented by AFCI's. Tamper Resistant Receptacles If you have small children in your home, this outlet is for you. These outlets protect your child
from electrical shock that is caused by tampering with the electrical outlets. The outlet has a mechanism that only allows a 2 bladed or grounded plug
to be put into the outlet. That means if a fork is pushed into the outlet, the shutters will not allow it to reach the

NFPA 70B– Section 11.17 provides guidance on the use of infrared scans to determine the condition of various elements of an electrical power
distribution system and to provide information that is used:
1.To determine whether any corrective maintenance or replacement is necessary or desirable
2.To confirm the ability of the element to continue to perform its design function adequately
3.To chart the gradual deterioration of the equipment over its service life
Preparation for Infrared Scan
Very little preparation is required of the organization requesting the infrared scan. The thermographer and the qualified electricians opening the panels
should follow NFPA 70E– Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace. This could include the need for arc flash analysis, training, and specific
personal protective equipment (PPE) for all personnel who will be standing in front of open, live electrical panels. [See NFPA 70E– Tables 130.7
(c)(9) (a), (c)(10), (c)(11) for details on PPE required]
Infrared Scan
Infrared (IR) scans should be performed while electrical equipment is under load, preferably peak load conditions, but not less than 40% of the rated
load of the electrical equipment being inspected.
Infrared scans typically include the

Electrical Engineering Work Performed Electrical Engineers research, develop, design, and test electronic components, products, and systems for
commercial, industrial, medical, military, and scientific applications (Cosgrove 749). They are concerned with devices that use small amounts of
electricity that make up electronic components such as integrated circuits and microprocessors. By applying principles and techniques of electronic
engineering they design, develop, and manufacture products such as computers, telephones, radios, and stereo systems (EGOE, 121). Electrical
engineers touch everyone lives through the things they have designed or created. Electrical engineers have invented the lights in your house, the

They set up a manufacturing plan for the product their company will be making (Kunz 12).
Field Service engineers work between the manufacturer and the consumer by installing the product for consumers and by helping them with any
technical support they may need (Kunz 12). The specialties that one can commit to in engineering can vary significantly. For example, they can
include acoustics, signal processing, lasers, robotics, electromagnetic compatibility, geosciences & remote sensing, or even vehicular technology
(Stine 300). Work Environment Most electrical engineers work in private industries such as television or telegraph companies (BLS 5). Others are
hired by the federal government for military, space programs or through engineering firms (BLS 5). Others work on a contract basis where they are
self–employed, and work independently as contractors or consultants (BLS 5).
Electronic engineers work mainly in a comfortable indoor environment usually in their offices and at their desks (Kunz 14). Engineers who are
involved in research and design also work in specially developed laboratories where they can conduct experiments and test their products. These
laboratories have a lot of high tech equipment that allow engineers to create a new product and test it so that it could be used for a solution in real
world problems. Engineers who are involved in production spend most of their time in production

Safety for Electrical System Workers Essay
"Electrical Safety is not an option – it is absolutely necessary for workers and employers alike".
Safety in the workplace is job number one for employer and employee alike. It is especially important for those who install and service electrical
systems. Nothing can replace a worker or loved one that has died or suffered the irreparable consequences of an electrical accident. No matter how
much an employer tries to safeguard its workers or how much safety training is provided; the ultimate responsibility lies with the worker. The human
factor is part of every accident or injury. The purpose of this paper is to identify electrical safety hazards and present ways to minimize or avoid their
consequences. It is a guide for improving electrical...show more content...
This act and relevant rules impose several safety requirements as electricity supply undertakings/ manufacturers/ contractors/ and users. They are
mandatory for every manufacturers, contractors, and users of electrical installation equipment's and electricity supply undertakings.
Investigation of electrical accidents reveal that at least every accident from small shock to a major fire disaster is caused by ignorance
/ inexperience or carelessness at one or more stages and failure of safety management. Why is Electrical Safety so Important? Electrical hazards
have always been recognized, yet serious injuries, deaths, and property damage occur daily. Organizations like the US Department of Labor and the
National Safety Council compile statistics and facts on a regular basis. The following table demonstrates the importance of electrical safety. 97% of
all electricians have been shocked or injured on the job. Approximately 30,000 workers receive electrical shocks yearly. Over 3600 disabling electrical
contact injuries occur annually. Electrocutions are the 4th leading cause of traumatic occupational fatalities. Over 2000 workers are sent to burn centers
each year with severe Arc–Flash burns. Estimates show that 10 Arc–Flash incidents occur every day in the US. 60% of workplace accident deaths are
caused by burn injuries. Over 1000 electrical workers die each year from workplace accidents.

Essay on Electrical Hazards
Electrical Hazards Electrical Hazards, risks of injury or death arising from exposure to electricity. Electricity is essential to daily life, providing heat
and light and powering appliances in homes and factories. It must, however, be treated with great care, because the consequences of an electrical fault
can be serious and sometimes fatal. Generally voltages greater than 50 volts can present a serious hazard and currents of more than about 50 milliamps
flowing through the human body can lead to death by electrocution. A shock occurs when a "live" part of some device is touched, so that current...show

the live end of a cable cut by an electric lawnmower. Electrical faults in the home cause around 25,000 fires each year, killing or injuring over 2,000
people. Electrical Installations Most countries have detailed regulations governing the standards to which electrical installations must conform. In the
United Kingdom the Wiring Regulations (BS 7671), produced by the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) and the British Standards Institution
(BSI), prescribe the wiring standards to be adopted. The Electrical Contractors Association (ECA) and the National Inspection Council for Electrical
Installation Contracting (NICEIC) require their members to observe these requirements to minimize any danger. Electrical Products In Britain,
domestic electrical products must satisfy the requirements of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations (1994), which were made under the
Consumer Protection Act (1987), and implement the Low Voltage Directive (73/23/EEC) of the European Union (EU). The technical interpretation of

2.Danger
Usage of line–powered device could be dangerous. As leakage of AC current (i.e. 60 hertz) in the body if it is of sufficient amplitude and duration it can
cause motor nerves depolarization thus induce involuntary tetanic like muscle contraction. As in most of the humans muscle contraction frequencies
are 40 and 60 hertz.
3.Battery–powered devices
Leaking of current from a battery–powered device is not dangerous. They are safe because there is continuous 0 hertz DC current regardless of its
amplitude and duration. This low voltage current cannot be able to cause nerve depolarization and thus couldn't induce titanic muscle contraction.
D.Physiological damage
When a 60 hertz AC current of 5 mA passes through a body it may cause unwanted physiological changes such as tissue burn and tetanic muscle
contraction which may cause severe body injuries including death.
1.Tetanic muscle contraction
The victom may showed minor–to–vigrous tetanic muscle contractions which may cause respiratory arrest or cardiac arrest and it leads to death by
electric shock.
2.Tissue burn
When 60 hertz AC current passed through a body it cause burn injuries primarily at skin surface and secondarily in deeper tissues because skin tissues
offer more resistance to current than the deeper tissues. Deeper tissue burn injuries are stronger if the skin is in

Electrical Engineering Importance
Electrical engineers are an important part of our lives. According to an article on "Truity", "Electrical engineers design, develop, test, and supervise the
manufacturing of electrical equipment." Electrical engineers work around forty hours a week and will sometimes work overtime ("State University").
A bachelor's degree or higher in electrical engineering is needed to get the job. Their median wage is about 71,610 dollars to 75,770 dollars per year
("State University"). They receive a lot of money maybe because it is a hard job to do or are very important. Without them would not have power
plants or other things we use on a daily basis. Electrical engineers sometimes make new ways to use electrical power to develop or improve
products ("Truity"). Some might say that they are very important in today's world since technology is used every day. To get a job in electrical
engineering, a bachelor's degree or higher is needed. It takes at least four to five years to get the bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. Some
colleges offer classes for electrical engineering. According to an article on "State University", "Some colleges offer work–study programs in which
students receive on–the–job training while they are still in school." This will improve chances in getting a job in this field. Certain skills are also
required for electrical engineering. Electrical engineers must be able to use the principles of calculus and other topics of math while working ("Truity").

A Brief Note On Old Electrical Wiring Safety
Adder Hernandez OSHT 1405 OSHA REGULATIONS Old Electrical Wiring Safety According to the National Fire Protection Association, there is a
yearly average of 24,000 home fires attributed to electrical or lighting equipment, causing more than 800 injuries, 300 deaths and $700 million in
property damage. Although electricity in residential homes first began in the later part of the 19th century for the wealthier, by the beginning of the
20th century, electricity in the home was becoming available and more affordable to many people, especially those who lived in urban areas. With
over a century of residential electricity in many cities and towns, the aging of the residential electrical systems is beginning to raise concerns within the
electrical and firefighting departments. Apart from the natural effects that age can have on wire insulation and electrical equipment over time,
residential electrical systems are rarely inspected after their original installation. In addition, the quality of the original installation may be a factor, as
well as bad upgrades or additions that may have been done by a homeowners or others throughout the years. The following are hazards that are
normally found in old electrical systems. Wire insulation. Original knob–and–tube wire used insulation made of gum–rubber. This "rubber" insulation
was actually a mixture of chemicals including hardening agents containing sulfur for curing. These different chemicals, especially sulfur, had a very

Electrical Hazards And Safety By Kevin Burke

  • 1. Electrical Hazards And Safety By Kevin Burke Electrical Hazards and Safety Kevin Burke 1.INTRODUCTION Everywhere nowadays there is electricity and devices that rely on electricity. Society is driven by the need for energy and "electricity generating plants now consume two–fifths of U.S. energy from all sources, including about 90% of America's coal and nearly 30% of its natural gas" (http:/ /needtoknow.nas.edu/energy/energy–sources/electricity/). The world today would not be nearly as advanced had it not been for the increased use of electricity. Electricity has so many uses they are seemingly innumerable, from use in air conditioners to cool people down. To making sure that individuals can see in everyday life with the use of lighting, the list could go on forever. However with this massive increase in electricity use there are also very drastic safety precautions that must be followed to ensure safe use of electrical products. Safety is a huge part of using electricity because having even a low voltage travel through the human body can kill someone. From a very young age it is instilled that electricity is not something to play with and that adults should make sure an activity is safe. Safety is not only important for humans but also for the infrastructure of the electrical components. People should ensure that they use surge protector and all of their wires are safe and not stripped. This will guarantee safety for the products in their homes. It is crucial that anything that has Get more content on HelpWriting.net

That is because these outlets have a feature that allows them to shut off power quickly when it detects an electrical danger. Common places that you will see GFCI's are in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, garages and outside. Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter AFCI's are used to reduce the risk of electrical fires. They work by interrupting power when an arc fault occurs. An arc fault is when a high–power discharge of electricity occurs between two wires. This creates heat which can then turn into a fire. These are common when there are faulty connections in the home due to corrosion or poor electrical installation. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has estimated that over 50% of the electrical fires that occur each year could be prevented by AFCI's. Tamper Resistant Receptacles If you have small children in your home, this outlet is for you. These outlets protect your child from electrical shock that is caused by tampering with the electrical outlets. As leakage of AC current (i.e. 60 hertz) in the body if it is of sufficient amplitude and duration it can cause motor nerves depolarization thus induce involuntary tetanic like muscle contraction. As in most of the humans muscle contraction frequencies are 40 and 60 hertz. 3.Battery–powered devices Leaking of current from a battery–powered device is not dangerous. They are safe because there is continuous 0 hertz DC current regardless of its amplitude and duration. This low voltage current cannot be able to cause nerve depolarization and thus couldn't induce titanic muscle contraction. D.Physiological damage When a 60 hertz AC current of 5 mA passes through a body it may cause unwanted physiological changes such as tissue burn and tetanic muscle contraction which may cause severe body injuries including death. 1.Tetanic muscle contraction The victom may showed minor–to–vigrous tetanic muscle contractions which may cause respiratory arrest or cardiac arrest and it leads to death by electric shock. 2.Tissue burn When 60 hertz AC current passed through a body it cause burn injuries primarily at skin surface and secondarily in deeper tissues because skin tissues offer more resistance to current than the deeper tissues.
