Run on Sentences
Run on sentences are sentences that contain too many ideas without proper punctuation. Not all long sentences are run on sentences. It is perfectly
acceptable to join several related ideas in one compound sentence. However, if you don 't follow punctuation rules, a sentence can become a run on. A
simple explanation of run ons and some examples of run on sentences should help to make this point clear.
Components of A Sentence
Each sentence has 3 necessary components 1. A subject: What is this sentence about? The subject is usually, but not always, a noun or a pronoun. 2. An
action: What is the subject of the sentence doing? The action is always a verb. 3. A complete thought: What is the purpose of this...show more content...
For example, it would be acceptable to say "Ann likes to read; she reads lots of books and goes to the library 3 times a week."
A SENTENCE FRAGMENT fails to be a sentence in the sense that it cannot stand by itself. It does not contain even oneindependent clause. There are
several reasons why a group of words may seem to act like a sentence but not have the wherewithal to make it as a complete thought.
It may locate something in time and place with a prepositional phrase or a series of such phrases, but it 's still lacking a proper subject–verb
relationship within an independent clause:
In Japan, during the last war and just before the armistice.
This sentence accomplishes a great deal in terms of placing the reader in time and place, but there is no subject, no verb.
It describes something, but there is no subject–verb relationship:
Working far into the night in an effort to salvage her little boat.
This is a verbal phrase that wants to modify something, the real subject of the sentence (about to come up), probably the she who was working so hard.
It may have most of the makings of a sentence but still be missing an important part of a verb string:
Some of the students working in Professor Espinoza 's laboratory last semester.
Remember that an –ing verb form without an auxiliary form to accompany it can never be a verb.

As many of my teachers have enjoyed preaching for the last three and a half years, one of the biggest purposes of high school is to prepare students
for college. Typically, teachers use middle school and junior high to prepare students for high school, high school to prepare them for college and

For a student to make real improvements and know what to expect out of college courses, they have to act on a teacher's guidance. Through looking
back at graded papers, listening to peer reviews and using resources, I was able to utilize my last semester of highschool English and advance weak
areas on my writing. Through extended self–review of my writing and outside resources like paperrater.com, I have cut down on diction errors in my
papers. For punctuation errors, refreshing my memory on rules for quotations, learning from past mistakes on papers and peer review has resulted in

In the novel, "Eats, Shoots, and Leaves" written by the British author Lynne Truss, the art of punctuation is the topic of the whole story and is
heavily exaggerated throughout, and this is the method that the author uses to get her point across. The point is that punctuation is a vital part of our
world, but some scenes left me saying, "It's just a punctuation mark!" The book also left me feeling that Lynne was very pretentious especially with
scenes such as when she wrote back to a pen pal concerning her errors in spelling. For me, this was one of the memorable scenes and one of the many
methods she used. Another method would have to be the humor, and I did find it dramatic with some of the scenes, which is what made it so funny to
know that people actually care so much about punctuation to a point where they would beat someone up for misusing it. Another thing is that Lynne
tends to put her argument onto the table in a very strong way and to me uses Pathos with her arguments to scare the audience into correctly using

Wouldn't you trust the author since her whole novel is about punctuation? Although she comes off as unlikable sometimes, she is an expert at this

The Importance Of Punctuation In Writing
Writing has always been a challenge for me. This is well evidenced by reading papers I wrote as recently as this past August. Concepts such as flow,
content, vocabulary, structure, organization, grammar, and tone appear simple enough to capture on paper; I have learned over the past few months,
however, that appearances can be misleading. Writing takes planning, creativity, commitment, and for me, a great deal of revising. I cannot pretend any
mastery of these tasks. However, I have made progress. I spent extensive time improving my vocabulary, buildingbetter organizational skills,

performer, I look for tools to convey feeling and emotion to others. Punctuation has been added to my toolbox. As I write straight plays and

To help me improve on my punctuation I will read Punctuation and Mechanics chapter in A Writer's Reference. By reading that chapter I think I will
learn about coordinating conjunctions and different ways to users use commas and when to use them. I hope to gain more skills that will help me

a reason behind it all. Emily Dickinson uses punctuation in a non–traditional way throughout her poems, contributing to the effect and meaning of her

The poetry of Emily Dickinson is one of the most recognizable of the 19th century. Dickinson's poetry stands out because of its unconventional use of
capitalization and punctuation. Her poems contain capitalized words which are not normally capitalized. Her poems are noted for the frequent use of
the dash. Literary scholars have attempted to interpret Dickinson's unconventional capitalization and punctuation. Some believe that it was merely part

In the novel, "Eats, Shoots, and Leaves" written by the British author Lynne Truss, the art of punctuation is the topic of the whole story and is heavily exaggerated throughout, and this is the method that the author uses to get her point across. The point is that punctuation is a vital part of our world, but some scenes left me saying, "It's just a punctuation mark!"
