2. INTRODUCTION
๏ Mustard (Brassica juncea L.) is an important rabi season oilseed crop which belongs to family crucifereae
(Brassicaceae) and genus Brassica. Indian mustard or brown mustard is natural amphidiploids having
chromosome no. (2n=36) with its origin place is China. It is self-pollinated crop but certain amount (2-
15%) of cross pollination occurs due to insects and other factors. Its seeds are known by different names
in different places e.g., sarson, rai or toria or lahi. White sarson and toria are termed as rape seed, raior
laha is termed as mustard. The major mustard growing states in India are Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh,
Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat, West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir.
๏ Mustard is cool season crop, which requires temperature range from 6 to 27ยฐC, mustard follows C3
pathway for carbon assimilation and at this temperature the plant achieve maximum CO2 assimilation
range. Mustard is generally grown under rainfed conditions and moderately tolerant to soil acidity. It
requires well drained soil having pH near to neutral. Mustard has a low water requirement (240โ400 mm)
which fits well in the rainfed cropping system. Nearly 20% area of mustard is under rainfed condition.
3. ๏ Mustard production has jumped by 29% from 91.24 to 117.46 lakh tonnes in last two years. The
productivity saw 10% jump from 1331 to 1458 kg/ha. The area under rapeseed & mustard has
increased by 17% from 68.56 in 2019-20 to 80.58 lakh ha in 2021-22.
๏ India is one of the largest producer of rapeseed and mustard in the world. Oil content in seeds
varies from 37 to 49 per cent. The oil obtained is the main cooking medium in northern India and
cannot be easily replaced by any other edible oil. The seed and oil of mustard have a peculiar
pungency due to presence of glucosinolate and its hydrolysis products such as allyl
isothiocynate (0.30-0.35%) making it suitable to use as condiment in the preparation of pickles
and for flavouring curries and vegetables.
๏ Drought stress is considered as one of the primary factors responsible for reduced agricultural
productivity, because it is often linked to other major abiotic stresses such as salinity and heat
stressetc. (Mehmood and Ashraf 2017).
4. Title of Research work :-

Genotypes of Indian Mustard (Brassica juncea L.)โ
Objectives:
1. To study the effect of drought on morpho-physiological attributes incontrasting genotypes of Indian mustard.
2. To study the effect of drought on yield and yield contributing parameters in contrasting genotypes of Indian mustard.
3. To find out the physiological indices responsible for improving droughttolerance in Indian mustard.
4. To analysis correlation coefficient values of different growth and yield attributes with yield per plant.

5. REVIEW OF LITERATURE
1. Ahmadizadeh, (2013) reported that drought stress has been well documented as an effective parameter in
decreasing crop production. Developing and releasing new varieties which are adaptable to water deficit conditions can
be a constructive program to overcome unsuitable environmental conditions. A good understanding of factors limiting
yield now provides us with an opportunity to identify and then select for physiological traits, which increases drought
tolerance and yield under rainfed conditions. Applying different physiological and agro-morphological tests to appreciate
drought tolerance in plant leads to faster selection methods. Therefore, these characters can be used as an indirect
selection criterion for screening drought tolerance plant materials, this strategy will lead to new cultivars with high yield
potential and high yield stability that in turn will result in superior performance in dry environments.
2. Chauhan et al. (2016) conducted a field trial and observed that there was a less reduction in seed per siliquae in
genotype varuna. The genotypes with 5 % reduction in number of seeds per siliqua were BPR-2, BPR-548, RH-0216 and
BPR-560.
6. Research Methodology
The present study entitled โPhysiological attributes of Drought Tolerance in Contrasting
Genotypes of Indian Mustard (Brassica juncea L.)โ will be carried out under the following heads-

๏ Treatments- The experiment will be conducted on ten genotypes (6 drought and 4 drought susceptible) in
randomized block Design (RBD) with three replications, Some genotypes which are drought tolerant and drought
susceptible will be selected and grown under control and drought conditions. Under control condition the plants
will be irrigated at flowering and pod formation stage while in drought the plants will be maintained under rainfed
condition.
