Ombuds Program – Associate Ombudsperson: March, 2001 – December, 2006
Provided Ombuds service to all employees, usually without appreciable direction on
unprecedented and extremely complex issues and problems. Applied advanced conflict
resolution skills such as mediation, consultation, coaching, facilitation, shuttle diplomacy
and referral. Developed new concepts and techniques to address unique situations with
minimal direction. Consulted with employees and external companies doing business
with LANL via anonymous telephone calls regarding various issues, questions, conflicts
and concerns requiring immediate assistance. Produced and analyzed reports and
trends while continuing to develop and nurture overarching institutional goals.
Communicated ongoing status regarding database activity including individual
accountability and responsibility for maintaining accurate and timely information along
with bringing closure to cases.
Applied knowledge of Laboratory systems, policies and conflict resolution processes to
make appropriate referrals, brainstorm options, provide or find answers to various

3. Operated the administration of anonymous e-mail venues (future@lanl.gov,
askjohn@lanl.gov and tellpete@lanl.gov) for past LANL Directors. This involved
exclusively receiving all submissions sent to the e-mail addresses, deleting any
information that could identify the submitter and relaying the remaining contents to
Laboratory Director. A database was also created to track the volume of submissions
received by date and to provide a weekly report of trends to help establish patterns.
