2. Reading and its Sub Skills
Reading involves several Sub
Skill.When the pupils read, they should be able
to recognise words and then know their
meaning. There are two types of activities
involved here. There are
1) The Mechanical activity which involves visual
perception
2) The Mental activity in which the reader seeks
to read for the meaning.
3. Sub skill of reading
The learners should be able to
Recognize and read words and phrases.
Develop desirable silent reading habits.
Accuire reasonable speed in reading.
Grasp meanings of words and sentences from
the contexts.
Locate, central ideas of passages.
Read aloud with correct pronunciation and
proper intonation.
Read with comprehension.
4. Types of reading Silent and Oral
read
There are two types of reading
1. Silent Reading
2. Oral Reading
5. Importance of oral and silent
reading
• The aim of teaching reading is two pronged. One
is self understanding and the second one is
making others understand.
• The first prong is called silent reading and the
second prong is called oral reading.
• Hence reading activity or skill may be classified
into two kinds namely silent reading and oral
reading.
• They possess their own importance. Now let us
try to understand their importance one by one.
6. 1) Importance of Oral Reading
It forms the first step in the teaching of
reading.
It then becomes the basis of silent reading.
Like other arts reading is an expressive,
dramatic and recreative art.
It enables the pupils to recognise quickly the
oral counterparts of the printed symbol.
It provides much practice in acquiring correct
stress, intonation and rhythm.
7. It helps the pupils to recognise meaningful
units.
It develops in them the art of reading with
feeling and expression.
It enables them to become good teachers
and speakers.
It develops in them sense of appreciation of
both.
It is a good test of the teacher.
8. 2) Silent Reading
• Oral reading is useful to the pupil during their
school career. Whereas silent reading is useful
for them after their school career. For reading in
actual life is mostly silent reading.
9. Importance of Silent Reading
a. It helps to acquire the mastery of a
language.
b. It enables them to read with ease, fluency
and understanding.
c. It assists the pupils to learn more and grasp
more than the oral reading.
d. Its main aim is to get pleasure and profit.
10. e. It saves time and energy as it is quicker than
oral reading.
f. It prepares the pupils for independent
reading.
g. It helps them to develop taste for reading.
As compared to oral reading, silent
reading enables the pupils to learn more and
to grasp more.
