2. What is Philosophy?
– Is defined as a science which concerns with a beings,
its ultimate reasons, its causes, its principles that can
be acquired by the aid of divine and human reasons.
– Systematic and comprehensive study of the truth
about everything therein.
– Generally, it is the knowledge of all things in their
first or causes as seen by the natural light reason.

–Socrates opined the “ men can
acquire wisdom but never

reason alone.
It is classified as;
internal senses – knowledge, abstraction,
judgment and reasoning, memory, consciousness
imagination and instinct.
external senses – 5 senses

by faith.
8. Philosophy vs Theology
Theology is the knowledge of things divine
which is given to us by God Himself through
revelation.
Philosophy explains its understanding of
God on a purely rational basis, while
theology explains God through revelation.

Philosophy
1. Philosophy leads us to a broader understanding of man and existence.
2. Philosophy give man pleasure or satisfaction.
3. Philosophy serves man a better understanding of himself and his fellow human
beings.
4. Philosophy acquaints a person to the various philosophical thinkers of the past
and end of his time.
5. Philosophy will guide him in making day-to-day decision of life and
experiences.
6. Philosophy gives other sciences a sense of meaning.

1. Metaphysics
Is the branch of philosophy which understands the nature of beings or reality in general in its
very essence; such as life after death, heaven, hell, Purgatory, Satan and God etc ….
2. ontology
is the branch of Philosophy which concerns in the study of of knowing the nature of a
particular man’s existence.
3. Cosmology
Is the branch of philosophy which studies the nature of changeable beings which include the
characteristics, origin, structure and order and laws which underline the experience and
operation of the world.

Is the branch of philosophy that inquires the origin,
nature and the process of acquiring and the validity of
human knowledge.
5. Theodicy
Is the branch of philosophy which studies of nature, being
and sovereignty of God; fellowship with God and man.
