Too often, product development or business teams are constrained (but not in a good way) by the thinking and the model that the HIPPO brings, the HIPPO here being the highly paid consultant in the room. In this deck, I call out what makes for a great model, and I introduce the model I use to bring exponential results for both product and business teams - an empowering and 'ridiculously' useful model called Mobius, which enables teams to do it for themselves...
As we all know , HIPPO in this context means highest...
But I am not talking about my boss, or your boss here, because frequently the most expensive person in the room is the consultant, and with them, they bring their model…
Let me start with a bit of a story...
in fact, more than that - they take the best bits of each and blend them successfully; think tool belt rather than chastity belt.
There is also something about brining what you already know from these frameworks and making it valuable in terms of language and understanding, but adding useful thinking and tooling…
They also work in situ with what you are doing now
Great models provide handrail (I was going to say guardrail, but that is too strong) for how to think, not constraints on what you can or can’t do
Balancing outcomes and outputs. More importantly, they make you think about the definition of what is valuable, and to whom
It very rare that we don’t know anything about a problem space, or a solution space – we usually have data, about how things re now, we might have feedback from users and stakeholders – great models help you pull out what you know now and give you support to make decisions
helping prevent ‘solution pollution’
Fair -> first attempt at learning
Feed back loops are so important for course correction…
Collaborative
Encourage conversations, mutual understanding, provide opportunities for teams to have robust conversations around value, and the utility of any solution hypothesis that might be generated
Successful teams work together, they have shared understanding of the why, the what and the how…
Mobius is…
A great model, once understood, is self evident – you don’t need the HIPPO in the room to continue making progress
Mobius is…
