Scenario You are working for the creative team at Jinjasnap, an independent film production company who
broadcast content on their own YouTube channel.
Jinjasnap are planning to devote three weeks of programming to a ‘film genre season’. This will
include programmes on fictional film genres, audience Q&A’s with film directors, and a series of
original short films.
You have been asked to analyse a selection of films from different genres in preparation for a series
of programmes on fictional film genres.
Your critical analysis of the purpose, format, narrative structure, visual storytelling, genre and
audience of your chosen films will be used by the production team for this new series to inform the
content of one or more of the programmes. You will be asked to present the outcome of your
analysis in an illustrated report to be provided to the production team.
Task 1 An analysis of the narrative and stylistic codes and conventions of different film genres
using detailed examples to illustrate points.

2. The assignment will take the form of written report, separated into two sections and submitted as a
post via online blog and a digital submission via turnitin. It will consider four films in total over two
different genres. Each film will draw reference to a minimum of two extracts, and will be
supported by selected stills that clearly back up the points made.
The report should include an analysis of chosen extracts from each of the films detailing how visual
storytelling techniques (e.g. cinematography, lighting, editing, mise en scene) and various uses of
sound (e.g. dialogue, sound effects, non-diegetic sound) have been used to create meaning,
reinforce or subvert the genre, and draw conclusions relating to the different uses of these
techniques for different purposes within the extracts.
Report format (this must be repeated for two separate genres – each genre must draw reference to
two films that form part of this genre, and compare them)
Section One: Compare and analyse the stylistic codes and conventions of fictional genre film
in reference to its target audience.
Close analytical study using extract/s (and relevant terminology) to explore:
Generic conventions and characteristics

Use of theory where appropriate
Section Two: Compare and analyse the narrative codes and conventions of fictional genre
film.
