An Analysis of the TED TALK
3 WAYS TO SPOT
A BAD STATISTIC
by MONA CHALABI
Three questions to help you spot a bad statistic :
1. Can you see uncertainty?
2.Can I see myself in the data?
3.How far was the data collected?
List the two most
(important/interesting/
informative)
insights from this TALK ?
The first insight is that :
Government statistic is often better than that of
private companies. Their sample space of the
survey is often more diverse and large, and
hence, the results inferred more accurate.
Government officers get the numbers right, not the right
numbers.
The second insight is that people often get a
wrong picture because they're not able to see the
uncertainties in data or because of
miscommunication. Trusting averages is not a
good idea also.
Why and How are these
insights relevant to a
manager in India?
Managers get an understanding of where their
companies' survey lacks. They can try to expand
their sample space and make it more diverse
and bigger which will help make better
inferences and lead to better strategies and
projects.
The main point of any presentation is for people
to understand the important facts, and not just
numbers. Managers must learn the art of
communication and data interpretation. It is
important to understand what the numbers are
saying.

  • 5. List the two most (important/interesting/ informative) insights from this TALK ?
  • 6. The first insight is that : Government statistic is often better than that of private companies. Their sample space of the survey is often more diverse and large, and hence, the results inferred more accurate.
  • 7. Government officers get the numbers right, not the right numbers.
  • 8. The second insight is that people often get a wrong picture because they're not able to see the uncertainties in data or because of miscommunication. Trusting averages is not a good idea also.

  • 10. Why and How are these insights relevant to a manager in India?
  • 11. Managers get an understanding of where their companies' survey lacks. They can try to expand their sample space and make it more diverse and bigger which will help make better inferences and lead to better strategies and projects.

  • 13. The main point of any presentation is for people to understand the important facts, and not just numbers. Managers must learn the art of communication and data interpretation. It is important to understand what the numbers are saying.
