3. VII. Past Perfect: Indicates an action that took place in the past before another past
action. The auxiliary verb had and the past participle form of the verb is used to form this
verb tense.

Question Form:
Had + Subject + past participle verb + rest of sentence
Had they left for the party when you called?
Negative Form:
Subject + had + not + past participle verb + rest of sentence
They had not left for the party when you called.
