2. Who are you, Shaul Ladany?
- Born April 2, 1936,in Belgrade ,
former Yugoslavia
- Survived the Bergen-Belsen
concentration camp in 1944, when
he was eight years old. He was one
of the few of Yugoslavia's 70,000
Jews who survived the Holocaust.
- He is Professor Emeritus in the
Department of Industrial
Engineering and Management at
Ben-Gurion University of the Negev
(BGU).
- Speaks nine languages, holds eight
patents, has written over 100
scientific papers and published 13
books among them “King of the
Road - From Bergen-Belsen to the
Olympic Games “.
3. - He is an Israeli race walker. He set
in 1972 and still holds the world
record in the 50-mile walk
(7:23:50), and the Israeli national
record in the 50-kilometer walk
(4:17:07). He is also a former world
champion in the 100-kilometer
walk.
- As one of the best race walkers in
the world in the 1960s and 1970s,
he represented Israel at the 1968
Mexico City Games, where he
finished in 24th place in the 50-km
walk, and at the ill-fated 1972
Munich Games.
- In 1972, he survived the Munich
Massacre where 11 Israeli
sportsmen were killed by members
of Black September, a Palestinian
terrorist group.
4. A few years ago, he set the world record in the 100 mile
walk for the 70+ year old age group , completing a race
in Ashtabula, Ohio, in 21hr 45min 34sec
5. In 2007, Shaul Ladany was
awarded the Pierre de
Coubertin Medal for
outstanding services to the
Olympic Movement and
was cited as “an unusual
person with unusual
outstanding sports
achievements during a
span covering over four
decades.”
6. - Shaul Ladany has been
inducted into the
International Jewish
Sports Hall of Fame.
The induction ceremony
will be held at the
Wingate Institute on July
17th
,2013, to coincide
with the 19th World
Maccabiah Games.

10. Asked if it would be fair to call him the ultimate survivor, Ladany laughed and answered: "I don't know about
that. What I can say is that in my life there has never been a dull moment."

walked around Omer , near Be'er
Sheva, in Israel's southern Negev
for
11hours and 11 minutes.
