2. CORONA VIRUS (COVID-19)
• Corona viruses are a large family of viruses which may cause illness
in animals or humans. In humans, several coronaviruses are known
to cause respiratory infections ranging from the common cold to
more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome
(MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The most
recently discovered coronavirus causes coronavirus disease COVID-
19.
• Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a
newly discovered coronavirus.
• Most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild
to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring
special treatment. Older people underlying medical problems like
cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and
cancer are more likely to develop serious illness.

3. How it spreads?
• COVID-19 virus spreads primarily
through droplets of saliva or discharge
from the nose when an infected person coughs or
sneezes.
• so it’s important that you also practice respiratory
etiquette (for example, by coughing into a flexed
elbow).

4. SYMPTOMS
Most common:
• fever.
• dry cough.
• tiredness.
Less common:
• aches and pains.
• sore throat.
• diarrhoea.
• conjunctivitis.
• headache.
• loss of taste or
smell.
• a rash on skin, or
discolouration of
fingers or toes.
Serious symptoms:
• Difficulty breathing or
shortness of breath.
• Chest pain or
pressure.

5. Prevention
• Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, or clean them with
alcohol-based hand rub.
• Maintain Social distancing
• Avoid touching your face.
• Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
• Stay home if you feel unwell.
• Refrain from smoking and other activities that weaken the lungs.
• Practice physical distancing by avoiding unnecessary travel and
staying away from large groups of people.

8. How it Started in India?
• On 30 January, India reported its
first case of COVID-19 in Kerala,
which rose to three cases by 3
February; all were students who
had returned from Wuhan, China.

during March, after several cases

linked to people with a travel
history to affected countries. On
12 March, a 76-year-old man who
had returned from Saudi Arabia
became the first victim of the
virus in the country.

On 26 February, India sent 15 tons of masks, gloves and other emergency medical
equipment to China.
On 03 March : Indian government stopped issuing of new visas.
On 4 March 2020, Minister of Health and Family Welfare, announced compulsory
screening of all international passengers arriving in India.
On 5 March, Government of Delhi announced shutting down all primary schools
across Delhi till 31 March.
On 6 March, the BSF announced that the Wagah-Attari border ceremony would be
conducted without any spectators.
On 10 March, Kerala announced closure of all schools and colleges across the
state, with effect from 11 March.
On 12 March, New Delhi, Karnataka & odisha closed all schools, colleges and
cinema halls. and prohibited non-essential official gatherings. Maharashtra
declared the outbreak to be an epidemic in the cities of Mumbai, Navi Mumbai,
Nagpur, Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad.
• On 13 March, the Punjab, Chhattisgarh and Manipur governments closed
educational institutions till 31 March.
• On 13 March, the BCCI postponed opening of 2020 IPL. On 16 April, BCCI
suspended the tournament indefinitely due to the pandemic.
• On 14 March, Himachal Pradesh & West Bengal closed educational institutions and
theatres until 31 March.
• On 15 March, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Telangana government closed schools,
colleges and cinema halls till 31 March.

18. • On 14 April, PM Narendra Modi extended the nationwide lockdown (lockdown 2.0) till
3 May, with a conditional relaxation from 20 April for the areas that have been able to
contain the spread and download the Aarogya Setu app to track your health.

• On 10 May, India sent Naval ship INS Kesari carrying medical teams, essential
medicines and food items to the Maldives, Mauritius, Madagascar, Comoros and
Seychelles following separate requests for help in dealing with the COVID-19
pandemic.
