• LOCKDOWN…. the term has been used for
varying limits on movement, function and
activities of communities.
The first case of Coronavirus disease
2019
Janata Curfew
• 'Janata Curfew' (people's curfew) on Sunday,
22 March
• The Janata Curfew was a 14-hour curfew
• People of 'essential services' such as police,
medical services, media, home delivery
professionals and firefighters were needed
to take part in the curfew.
Phase 1 -21 days
• Janata Curfew is just the beginning of a long
battle against COVID-19
• Nationwide lockdown from midnight, for a
period of 21 days
At 5 p.m. that day, all citizens were asked to
stand in their doorways, balconies or windows,
and clap their hands or ring their bells in
appreciation for the professionals delivering
these essential services
• On 26 March, finance minister Nirmala
Sitharaman announced a ₹170,000
crore stimulus package to help those affected by
the lockdown.
• Food security measures for poor households
• Direct cash transfers
• Free cereal
• Cooking gas for three months.
• Insurance coverage for medical personnel.
• On 5 April, switching off the electric lights
at home from 9:00 p.m. to 9:09 p.m. for 9
minutes and lighting diya, candle; and
flashing torchlight and mobile flashlight.
Phase 2 (15 April – 3 May)
• On 14 April, PM Modi extended the
nationwide lockdown till 3 May
• The government also announced certain
relaxations from 20 April,
agricultural businesses,
including dairy,
aquaculture and plantations, as well as shops
selling farming supplies, to open
• On 25 April, small retail shops were allowed
to open with half the staff. Again social
distancing norms were to be followed
Phase 3 (4 May – 17 May)
• Lockdown extended further by two weeks until
17 May.
• The country has been split into 3 zones:
 red zones (130 districts),
 orange zones (284 districts) and
 green zones (319 districts)
• Red zones are those with high coronavirus
cases
• Orange zones are those with comparatively
fewer cases
• Green zones are those without any cases in
the past 21 days
• Normal movement is permitted in green zones with
buses limited to 50 percent capacity.
• Orange zones would allow only private and hired
vehicles but no public transportation.
• The red zones would remain
under lockdown.
Phase 4 (18 May – 31 May)
Lockdown extended for a period for two weeks
beyond 18 May, with additional relaxation

Additional rations due to the lockdown
• Walking or bicycling hundreds of kilometres
• Many arrested for violating the lockdown
• And some died in accidents
on the roads
On 29 March, the government ordered
landlords to not demand rent and employers
to pay wages without deduction
• On 1 May, the central government permitted
the Indian Railways to launch "Shramik
Special" trains for the migrant workers
• However, this service was not free, with
additional charges over the normal fares.
• On 16 May, the Supreme Court rejected
a PIL seeking free relief and transport for
the migrant workers
• Those with uncontrolled diabetes,
hypertension and heart disease are at high
risk for the complications of COVID-19
infection
RELIEF
On 26 March 2020, the Indian government
announced a relief package of $22.6 billion to
assist the poor population hit economically
by the COVID-19 pandemic
• State governments operated 22,567 relief
camps for stranded migrant workers, of which
 15,541 camps were operated by Kerala,
 1,135 camps by Maharashtra,
178 camps by Tamil Nadu
• Non governmental organization were
operating 3,909 camps.
• The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh provided
essential services including soaps, masks and
food to many all over India during the
lockdown
• Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak

treat corona positive patients at its Hospitals
ROLE OF NURSE
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (12
may) applauded nurses for their role in
keeping people healthy, saying the country is
grateful to them for their "great work" in the
fight against novel coronavirus.
• The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed
in May last year that 2020 would be dedicated to
nurses and midwives.
• The nursing response to the coronavirus (COVID -
19) crisis has gone way beyond the core purpose of
2020 as the International Year of the Nurses and
Midwives.
• The work put in by nurses in the COVID 19 crisis
is a powerful & practical
• Nurses play a pivotal part in in achieving the
healthcare goals
Their work ranges from providing not only
highly specific technical care, but also
coordinating the work of other health care
professionals to meet patient care goals
• Year of the nurse
• Nurses have proved to be the health
warriors
• They are working in the care of patients in
the COVID zone.
• Nurses are working round the clock
We salute these healthcare warriors who
work without any expectations and by
sacrificing their personal life and family and
for their contribution in saving lives and
improving health outcomes.
I hope that nurses as a group, grow
professionally and that enrolments into
nursing profession increase. This year, 2020,
being the year of the Nurse and Midwife &
there is no time like the present to celebrate
and be proud of the rewarding profession.
