In small groups attempt to answer
     the following questions.
Quiz questions
1. Minke, fin and blue are all species of what?
Minke, fin and blue are all species of whale.
2. Which of the following is not considered to be a greenhouse gas:
     a) nitrogen, b) carbon dioxide, c) water vapour, d) nitrous oxide?
a). Nitrogen is not considered to be a greenhouse gas.
3. What colour is malachite?
     Malachite is green.
4. Researchers recently reported observing empathic behaviour in
     which non-primate mammal?
Rats were recently reported as displaying empathic behaviour.
5. The Higgs boson is a theoretical particle believed to give rise to
     which property of matter?
The Higgs boson is believed to give particles their mass. Scientists
at CERN have released results from the Large Hadron Collider that
may be the first experimental evidence of the Higgs boson.
Quiz questions
1. What is the molecular formula for methane?
The molecular formula for methane is CH4.
2. Which of these distances is the closest to the diameter of Earth? a) 2100
      kilometres, b) 7600 kilometres, or c) 12 700 kilometres.
The approximate diameter of Earth is c) 12 700 kilometres.
3. What is the name of the chemical that is responsible for wasabi's burning
      sensation?
Allyl isothiocyanate is the chemical responsible for wasabi, horseradish and
      mustard's burning sensation.
4. Where would you find your fusiform gyrus?
You would find the fusiform gyrus in your brain. It is known to play a role in
      recognising faces.
5. What is Relenza? a) a type of bacterium, b) a drug for treating the flu, or
c) a brand of robot used at mining sites.
b). Relenza is a drug for treating the flu. CSIRO researchers found a region on
the flu virus that a drug can lock onto, stopping the infection from progressing.
Quiz questions
1. Where can you find miraculin?
You can find miraculin in miracle berries. It also sold in tablet form. Miraculin
is a protein that bonds to taste buds making sour foods taste sweet.
2. Why is faeces (poo) typically brown?
Faeces is typically brown (and urine is usually yellow) due to a chemical
released from the breakdown of red blood cells.
3. What is the common name for Carassius auratus auratus?
Carassius auratus auratus are more commonly known as goldfish.
4. Microdots are being used by the Australian National University to
track what type of insect?
Microdots are being used to track the flight paths of wasps.
5. What is ANIC an abbreviation of?
ANIC is an abbreviation used to refer to the Australian National Insect
Collection. It’s the world’s largest collection of Australian insects and related
groups, managed by CSIRO.
Quiz questions
1.How is monotreme reproduction different to other mammals?
Monotremes don’t give birth to live young – they lay eggs.
2. What layer of the Earth lies beneath the crust?
The mantle is the layer beneath the Earth’s crust.
3. Which has the higher atomic number: aluminium or magnesium?
Aluminium, which has an atomic number of 13. Magnesium’s atomic
number is 12.

investigating?
The GRAIL spacecraft are investigating the Moon.
5. What are Psittaciformes more commonly known as?
Psittaciformes is the name of the order that is made up of parrots
and cockatoos. Some species of black cockatoos in Western Australia
are under threat of extinction due to habitat destruction.
Quiz questions
• 1. Which fossil fuel provides most of
  Australia’s electricity?
  2. What are Saturn’s rings made of?
  3. Which is denser: saltwater or freshwater?
  4. Professor David Bowman recently
suggested introducing which of the following
  animals into northern Australia: a) elephants;
  b) water buffalo; c) lions; d) Komodo dragons?
