WORD FROM PMI
LEBANON CHAPTER
Since October 2019, we “Lebanese” are living the economic and political crises
that is taking place in my home country Lebanon. The main three pillars are down
(1) Government, (2) Central Bank and (3) Banking sector. Many negative and bad things
happened since then till now August 2021. But today I am highlighting and illustrating
about the positive side of such crises.
Yes, still there is a positive side. In other words,“some” people were able to benefit from
crises; not in an illegal or an unethical way, on the contrary, in a smart and ethical way.
We all as project managers are experts in dealing with Risks whether it is a negative
(threat) or a positive (opportunity) risk. Lebanon crises is a risk that occurred and is still
ongoing, but we can look around us and see some people that benefit from this Force Majeure and exploit it as an
opportunity in many ways. I am only mentioning two of them:
1- Getting away from the comfort zone: Before crises, many employees keep on holding the same role at an
organization for many years, because they find stability, satisfied with the routine work flow, convinced with the
salary, happy with the their managers, comfortable with their colleagues etc ... It’s the Comfort Zone, maybe there
would have been a better opportunity out there, but not of any interest by then.
Now crisis has changed these norms. Because most of the organizations in Lebanon have collapsed or nearly
collapsing, employees started looking for an alternative (organizations outside Lebanon or organizations functioning
in Lebanon but run projects/services outside the Lebanese market). Most of them (employees) simply found a role
to fulfill and they are booming in the new organization and gaining (experience and money) more than what was
the case in their previous Comfort Zone.
2- Precious time to study and learn more: As a reaction to the economic crisis, many organizations lessened the
working hours to reduce overhead cost and decrease employees’ salaries; as workload is much less (in many
industries but not all). Many people grabbed this chance (less working hours and more free time) to study and attain
new certificates which really added a great value to their professional portfolio and experience.
Everything has two sides, positive and negative even crisis and collapsing has a positive side that we can benefit from.
Opportunities are everywhere they just has to be exploit.

TESTIMONIAL:
I remember the first monthly talk I attended right after joining PMI LC. It was about emotional intelligence
and it got me anchored to this monthly event ever since. What I love about monthly talks is that they are
beneficial on the personal level as much as on the professional level, thus contributing to our overall growth.
In addition, I appreciate how PMI LC switched to the “virtual mode” since the spread of Covid-19 and managed
to benefit from the situation by inviting international speakers. I feel proud of being a PMI LC member,
and hope to find myself more time to attend other events and be more engaged.

"I am attending PMI LC events and very thankful for the team’s effort of the PMI LC Board. The events are well
organized, and during the pandemic, for the last 2 years and the situation we have been going through in

1.As a next generation leader; how do you describe the role of project manager to your friends and family?
A project manager is a person who makes sure there is good sustainability and desired quality. They know
everything about the project on all its aspects and they are responsible for doing the coordination. Such as
knowing the time and budget, knowing the stakeholders and constraints. The project manager makes decisions
regardless of the unknowns and uncertainty, which makes him or her a person that should be prepared to any
situation. He or she also have the characteristics of agility.
2.As a youth role model; how do you apply and benefit from your management skills in your life?
Management skills are a part of my everyday life, whether in my home, my university or in my workplace.
For instance, coordinating a hike with my friends drives a planning strategy. Knowing how to pick the place
and time and how to organize the group is a part of managing it. I start with knowing the resources available
such as who’s coming, what day is best for a hike and what should we wear, how would the weather be where
would we hike, and at what time? Most importantly is planning what happens if the weather changed and how
to be easy going with an alternative. At first it won’t be comfortable for planning an alternative but risks still
need to be considered. A second part of managing is choosing the type of communication with the other person
to fix a problem or to get over it, in order to reach the desired result of the project.
3.As a university student; can you tell us how did project management credentials help in advancing
your knowledge?
Of course, it advanced my knowledge by discovering the practical experience before the theoretical.
This happened when I shifted my major from Pharmacy school to Business school.
Instead of finishing the rest of my 4years Pharmacy and getting the PharmD, I entered the business school
and took my CAPM certificate at my first year.
I have gained knowledge from my training at ADVISORS, an opportunity that I’m grateful for, such as Customer
Relationship Management, Scheduling Management, Project coordination, Business Development, and Business
Analysis, all just at my first year in Business school.

INTERVIEW

4. How can you empower youth as a change maker and share with us a successful project you have worked
and its lessons learned? (If you are working).
Having the CAPM certificate is just my start. I still have a lot of milestones and a whole career to discover.
Project management defined my priorities in making decisions better. I now manage my life and problems
in a different way, I put all possibilities in front of me and have different options to a decision. This made
me choose better and avoid or mitigate risks in order not to shut down if I faced a hard time. Such as the
explosion of August 4. Life went on and I learned that there are other ways to what I planned first, and I can
still find ways to implement an execution. I would love to initiate my project someday as I hope my choice
of career shifting will help me.
5.Any advice and recommendation you can give to other young leaders interested in becoming
project managers
Despite our challenges in Lebanon during the corona time, I strongly advise them to discover their potential.
To learn through online courses and become curious what’s the world outside is heading to, and what’s needed
in the near future. Having a vision is just a start. Becoming a future project manager is a becoming a leader
and a person who knows how to take decisions and implement them. He or she should be open to challenges,
agile, curios, and have communication and people skills. They should keep on growing to make their limit above
the sky in order to find the best opportunities. In a few words, one can start by being the project manager
of their own lives. Therefore, professional growth starts from a personal level and by developing one's own
skills, this is what makes them more valuable to the market place.

  • 3. PMI LEBANON CHAPTER NEWSLETTER  BACK TO CONTENTS 3 WORD FROM PMI LEBANON CHAPTER Since October 2019, we “Lebanese” are living the economic and political crises that is taking place in my home country Lebanon. The main three pillars are down (1) Government, (2) Central Bank and (3) Banking sector. Many negative and bad things happened since then till now August 2021. But today I am highlighting and illustrating about the positive side of such crises. Yes, still there is a positive side. In other words,“some” people were able to benefit from crises; not in an illegal or an unethical way, on the contrary, in a smart and ethical way. We all as project managers are experts in dealing with Risks whether it is a negative (threat) or a positive (opportunity) risk. Lebanon crises is a risk that occurred and is still ongoing, but we can look around us and see some people that benefit from this Force Majeure and exploit it as an opportunity in many ways. I am only mentioning two of them: 1- Getting away from the comfort zone: Before crises, many employees keep on holding the same role at an organization for many years, because they find stability, satisfied with the routine work flow, convinced with the salary, happy with the their managers, comfortable with their colleagues etc ... It’s the Comfort Zone, maybe there would have been a better opportunity out there, but not of any interest by then. Now crisis has changed these norms. Because most of the organizations in Lebanon have collapsed or nearly collapsing, employees started looking for an alternative (organizations outside Lebanon or organizations functioning in Lebanon but run projects/services outside the Lebanese market). Most of them (employees) simply found a role to fulfill and they are booming in the new organization and gaining (experience and money) more than what was the case in their previous Comfort Zone. 2- Precious time to study and learn more: As a reaction to the economic crisis, many organizations lessened the working hours to reduce overhead cost and decrease employees’ salaries; as workload is much less (in many industries but not all). Many people grabbed this chance (less working hours and more free time) to study and attain new certificates which really added a great value to their professional portfolio and experience. Everything has two sides, positive and negative even crisis and collapsing has a positive side that we can benefit from. Opportunities are everywhere they just has to be exploit. It was about emotional intelligence and it got me anchored to this monthly event ever since. What I love about monthly talks is that they are beneficial on the personal level as much as on the professional level, thus contributing to our overall growth. In addition, I appreciate how PMI LC switched to the “virtual mode” since the spread of Covid-19 and managed to benefit from the situation by inviting international speakers. I feel proud of being a PMI LC member, and hope to find myself more time to attend other events and be more engaged. NEXT MEMBER 

  • 11. 1.As a next generation leader; how do you describe the role of project manager to your friends and family? A project manager is a person who makes sure there is good sustainability and desired quality. They know everything about the project on all its aspects and they are responsible for doing the coordination. Such as knowing the time and budget, knowing the stakeholders and constraints. The project manager makes decisions regardless of the unknowns and uncertainty, which makes him or her a person that should be prepared to any situation. He or she also have the characteristics of agility. 2.As a youth role model; how do you apply and benefit from your management skills in your life? Management skills are a part of my everyday life, whether in my home, my university or in my workplace. For instance, coordinating a hike with my friends drives a planning strategy. Knowing how to pick the place and time and how to organize the group is a part of managing it. I start with knowing the resources available such as who’s coming, what day is best for a hike and what should we wear, how would the weather be where would we hike, and at what time? Most importantly is planning what happens if the weather changed and how to be easy going with an alternative. At first it won’t be comfortable for planning an alternative but risks still need to be considered. A second part of managing is choosing the type of communication with the other person to fix a problem or to get over it, in order to reach the desired result of the project. 3.As a university student; can you tell us how did project management credentials help in advancing your knowledge? Of course, it advanced my knowledge by discovering the practical experience before the theoretical. This happened when I shifted my major from Pharmacy school to Business school. Instead of finishing the rest of my 4years Pharmacy and getting the PharmD, I entered the business school and took my CAPM certificate at my first year. I have gained knowledge from my training at ADVISORS, an opportunity that I’m grateful for, such as Customer Relationship Management, Scheduling Management, Project coordination, Business Development, and Business Analysis, all just at my first year in Business school. • 12. 4. How can you empower youth as a change maker and share with us a successful project you have worked and its lessons learned? (If you are working). Having the CAPM certificate is just my start. I still have a lot of milestones and a whole career to discover. Project management defined my priorities in making decisions better. I now manage my life and problems in a different way, I put all possibilities in front of me and have different options to a decision. This made me choose better and avoid or mitigate risks in order not to shut down if I faced a hard time. Such as the explosion of August 4. Life went on and I learned that there are other ways to what I planned first, and I can still find ways to implement an execution. I would love to initiate my project someday as I hope my choice of career shifting will help me. 5.Any advice and recommendation you can give to other young leaders interested in becoming project managers Despite our challenges in Lebanon during the corona time, I strongly advise them to discover their potential. To learn through online courses and become curious what’s the world outside is heading to, and what’s needed in the near future. Having a vision is just a start. Becoming a future project manager is a becoming a leader and a person who knows how to take decisions and implement them. He or she should be open to challenges, agile, curios, and have communication and people skills. They should keep on growing to make their limit above the sky in order to find the best opportunities. In a few words, one can start by being the project manager of their own lives. Therefore, professional growth starts from a personal level and by developing one's own skills, this is what makes them more valuable to the market place.
