Name of the teacher: ANAMIKA
Subject - Physics
Name of the unit- Motion and laws of motion
Name of the lesson- Newton’s first law of motion
Time – 40 minutes
Curricular statement
Through observation and discussion students will be able to learn the concept
Newton’s first law of motion.
Content Analysis
Terms- inertia of rest, inertia of motion, inertia, newton’s first law of motion
Facts-
 Inertia of rest is the tendency of a bodyto remain in its state of rest or its
inability to change in its state of rest by itself.
 Inertia of motion is the tendency of a bodyto remain in its state of
motion or its inability to change in its state of motion by itself.
 Inertia is the inability of a bodyto change its state of rest or of uniform
motion along a straight line by itself.
 Every bodycontinues in its state of rest or of uniform motion along a
straight line unless an unbalanced external force acts on it. This is
Newton’s first law of motion.
Concept-Every bodycontinues in its state of rest or of uniform motion
along a straight line unless an unbalanced external force acts on it. This is
Newton’s first law of motion.
Learning outcomes-
 Remembering:
Recall- pupil will recall what is unbalanced force and motion.
Recognize-pupil will recognize some common tendencies of
bodies at rest and motion.
 Understanding:
Pupil will explain the conceptof newton’s first law of motion.
 Applying:
Pupil will apply the conceptof newton’s first law of motion in
unfamiliar situation.

Introduction
Good morning students,
How are you?
On last class we have learned about unbalanced external force and motion and
observations of Galileo. Isn’t it?
Discussion points
 Can unbalanced force can cause motion?
 But can all unbalanced forces cause motion?
 Did a bodyin motion does need an external
unbalanced force for it to continue in its state of
rectilinear uniform motion?
Consolidation
 Yes, unbalanced force can cause motion
 No, all unbalanced force cannot cause motion
 No, a bodyin motion doesn’tneed an external force
for it to continue in its state of rectilinear uniform
motion.
As a continuation of galileo’s observation newton formulated his laws of
motion. lets look on to a activity first.
Activity 1
Observe the picture carefully
Discussion points
What do you understand from the figure?
Do you notice it?
What is it called?
If the man don’t pushthe car.do you know what may be happened there?
Consolidation
So the picture shows a breakdown car and it tends to move as a man push
the car from outside isn’t it ?
So to change the state of rest of that bodya man give a force from outside.
Yes it is called unbalanced external force.
The car remain at rest
So we can gave the tendency of the car to remain at rest a name.it is called
inertia of rest.
Inertia of rest
Inertia of rest is the tendency of a bodyto remain in its state of rest or its
inability to change its state of rest by itself.
We can look do moving objects also have such tendencies.
Activity 2
Bring the bottle into motion by pulling the paper slowly. Gradually increase
the speed of pulling stop pulling when the bottle gains a certain speed.
Discussion points
 What do you observe?
 Wasn’t the bottle in a state of motion before you stopped pulling the
paper?
 Didn’t the top of the bottle show a tendency to continue its motion,
when you stopped pulling the paper?
 Can you explain the tendency of a bodythe tendency of a bodyto
remain in its state of motion?
Consolidation
 The bottle tends to move
 Yes
 Yes
 Inertia of motion
Inertia of motion is the tendency of a bodyto remain in its state of
motion or its inability to change its state of motion by itself.
Activity 3
Fig 1
fig 2
fig 3
Discussion points
Point out examples where inertia of rest and inertia of motion is present.
Consolidation
Inertia of motion-fig 3
Inertia of rest- fig 1,2
So inertia of rest and inertia of motion are generally named as inertia.
Discussion points
Can anyone explain what is inertia
Consolidation
Inertia is the inability of a bodyto change in its state of rest or of uniform
motion along a straight line by itself.
Next we can see a video
Discussion points
State newton’s 1 law of motion.
Consolidation
Everbody continues to be in the state of rest or of uniform motion along a
straight line unless an unbalanced external force acts on it. This is Newton’s
1 law of motion.
Review
 What is inertia of rest?
 What is inertia of motion?
 What is inertia?
 State newton’s first law of motion.
 State situations where newton’s 1 law of motion is used?
 Is newton’s 1 law of motion and inertia related?
