Short Story Short Essay
The sun beamed through the open window, embracing me in the warmth and comfort. My plane had just arrived in Paris, France. It was a peaceful
walk to baggage claim when some random girl interrupted my daydream. "Dixie, Dixie Lloyd is that you?" some dark haired girl said to me. I looked
at her confused as she laughed. Ah, yes I did remember her. My, my she was the most annoying girl I have ever met.
She kept trying to talk to me asking me all these questions and following me wherever I went. Luckily I lost her in a crowd of people just as I was
about to leave the airport. Ok, so here's a little back story for you, so long story short...
It was a year ago I visited here and met Clement Perez. I was new and had nowhere to live, she offered a place and I took it. Long story short she
ended up going to a mental hospital for being exceedingly crazy and trying to hurt many people including myself.
I stepped outside and let the sun soak up inside me. Looking around I saw my friend, Andre Lefevre, waiting for me leaned up beside his car
How I know him is to long of a story to tell so let's just say I met him the day I almost died.
We said our hellos as he brought me to my hotel which I would staying at for the next two weeks. The bellhop brought my bags to my room and
Andre bid me a farewell. It was around nine o'clock pm when I got settled. Even though it was only around three o'clock in the afternoon I didn't want
to be tired the next day. So I just decided to go to sleep.

Essay about Short Story
Short Story The sudden, severe storm caught me totally unaware. I was walking down Peppers Road when the dark clouds started to build. I looked
around as I huddled under a large, dead oak tree which offered me little or no protection from the razor–sharp rain. Almost all of the houses on this
abandoned street were too badly damaged for me to take shelter in, except for one. The house loomed impressive and morbid in the greenish–black sky.
A flash of lightning briefly illuminated the house and I saw that the windows were broken, but the structure seemed sound. I started to think what I
should do; my options were to either stay under this great dead oak tree risking getting hit by lightning...show more content...
There was a crash from upstairs. My heart began to race. Who was it? What was it? I could only hear my heart as I listened for another sound. The
silence throbbed in my ears; I stood at the bottom of the staircase. The sounds had come from upstairs. My curiosity and swallowed my fears and
nervously ascended the battered and dilapidated stairs, not knowing what I was going to encounter. On the second floor I found a bathroom furnished
in an old murky green with scale on it, I left it undisturbed as the floor looked unsafe. I found several bedrooms laden with cloth–covered antiques,
clothes that might have been beautiful at one time, and tarnished jewellery. The walls and floor where all wooden, they were illuminated by the
constant stream of lightning flashes that came through the stained window that towered over me. At the end of the second floor, I found yet
another stair well. This one was dark and coated with lacy spider webs. It led to what must have been the children's floor at one point. There was a
play room that took up most of the space, along with two bedrooms with dainty furniture, and the nurse's room. What I mistook for a closet at first
was really a narrow flight of stairs that lead into the attic. A giant rat scampered across my feet. Its beady eyes glowed red in the flicker of my lighter.
It hissed at me. I

What Makes a Good Short Story
What Makes a Good Short Story and How Successful is R.K. Narayan in Portraying the Character of Swami in the Short Story 'A Hero'?
Nadine Gordimer – 'Short story writers see by the light of the flash; theirs is the art of the only thing we can be sure of – the present moment.' This is
a quote from short story writer Nadine Gordimer; referring to how the art of short story writing is to get straight to the point and write everything as it
is. This is an art and those who cannot perfect it should admire it instead.
Edgar Allan Poe – 'In the whole composition there should be no word written of which the tendency, direct or indirect, is not to the pre–established

This is an example of changing the reader's emotions in a matter of a few seconds and it has a positive effect on the feelings towards the story.
The story has to have a fast pace to it, meaning that there are no slow starts or moments of the book where the reader can put it down. This means
that there should be something humourous, exciting or out of the ordinary that will keep the reader gripping the book and hoping that the story will
never end. R.K. Narayan uses irony cleverly in his short story to keep up the fast pace and to keep the reader smiling.
The best example of irony R.K. Narayan uses is the actual title of his short story, 'A Hero'. This is due to the fact that throughout the story there are
two examples of boys who are not heroes, but are quite hilariously the opposite: cowards. At the start of the story Swami's father reads to him an
article from his newspaper, reading 'News is to hand of the bravery of a village lad who, while returning home by the jungle path, came face to
face with a tiger' and then the article goes on to describe the fight the boy endured with the tiger and his flight up a tree, where he stayed for half a
day till some people came that way and killed the tiger. This boy was by no means a hero, but a coward who just survived his encounter with a tiger
by climbing up a tree and with luck some people came along, who managed to kill the tiger. The second example of his not–so–much 'a hero'

THESIS: In "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell and "Young Goodman Brown" by Nathaniel Hawthorne, imagery and characterization are
employed to illustrate the ever present inner darkness of humanity. However, the authors set very different themes in how their protagonists reflect
upon and respond to being faced with it. Both men must choose whether they will reject and confront evil or simply abide it with apathy.
I. The dark imagery used in both stories convert evil into a nearly tangible entity. a. The lack of visibility in these stories corresponds to the fear felt by
both men. b. The dense jungle/forest instills a sense of chaos that...show more content...
He offers the younger his staff to help speed his pace (Hawthorne, 264). He even shares a jolly banter with Goody Cloyse, an elderly woman whom
young Goodman Brown recognizes, and likewise, offers his staff to aid her (Hawthorne, 266). Old Goodman Brown also gives an articulate counter
for every argument young Goodman Brown has to cut their walk short and return home. For example, when young Goodman Brown boasts the
honesty and goodness of his father and grandfather, the traveler responds that "I have been well acquainted with your family... They were my good
friends" (Hawthorne, 264). The fact that young Goodman Brown had never heard of such a communion spoken of in his family is almost
convincing to him of its plausibility. Connell also masks General Zaroff's evil nature with an air of friendliness and respectability. From the moment
that Rainsford appears at the front door, the general is welcoming and kind. He gives Rainsford food, shelter, and offers his own clothes for
Rainsford to wear (Connell, 4). During the course of their conversation, General Zaroff explains to Rainsford that they are kindred spirits as fellow
hunters. Having dominated every prey he has ever stalked, Zaroff has become bored with traditional hunting and extols the merit of a new game that he
has devised, "it supplies me with the most exciting hunting in the world. No other hunting compares with it for an instant" (Connell, 6). The general is

A Formalist Approach On A Short Story

A Formalist Approach to a Short Story There are so many different things one can learn from reading a story. Stories vary in length but it seems that
your appetite for reading will gauge the kind of stories you elect to read. People who enjoy long thought out complex reading will enjoy much longer
published works than what a short story has to offer. However there is a large population in the world of people who do not want to spend days on
end reading a novel that is several hundred pages long and takes days to convey a simple message. In fact, many people want just the opposite in
their reading. Many readers want a story that is short, sweet, and to the point. Something that they don't need to spend hours or weeks on end
reading but instead can get the exact same message or meaning from instead of having to spend a ridiculous amount of time reading a much larger
work. Authors often want readers use the Formalist approach when reading these short stories as authors use words to convey the same message or
meaning in less text than a much longer published work with hundreds of pages, it does this by using the text itself as a canvas for creativity. The
Formalist approach is a great tool when it comes to writing short stories, and its use in Good Country People by Flannery O'Connor is classic example
of how the Formalist Approach can be so effective in such a short story. Authors are incredibly

Short Stories : Personal Responsibility
Do you feel an obligation to think about other people's welfare? If you do, how far does that responsibility extend? Are you responsible for a sibling,
a neighbor, or even a stranger across the world? The short stories I read help me think about the world around me and enlighten my understanding of
my personal responsibility to others. First, these short stories show personal responsibility by describing to what degree we are responsible for the
weaker or oppressed members of society. Second, the short stories I read helped me think about to what extent should we be driven by personal
responsibility to act with compassion, empathy, and concern for others. Finally, short stories exemplify how we are personally responsible for our
friends and how we live our own lives.
First, short stories show personal responsibility by describing to what degree we are responsible for the weaker or oppressed members of
society.Throughout the short stories, I have seen how the weaker and oppressed member of society are being helped. For example, in the short story, the
"Scarlet Ibis", the narrator has a responsibility, given to him by his mother, to help his younger brother who cannot care for himself. As the narrator
says in the story, "It seemed so hopeless from the beginning that it's a miracle I didn't give up. But all of us must have something or someone to be
proud of, and Doodle had become mine. I did not know then that pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed that bears two

The short stories "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "The Short Happy Life of Francis Mocomber" were both written by world renowned author Ernest
Hemingway. The two stories are written completely unrelated to each other; however, both stories have vast similarities in the time and place in
which they take place. Hemingway is a writer that is very methodical in his word choices. When reading these two stories a second time the reader
finds considerable differences in the writing style the author uses in each story. To demonstrate, three sentences from each story will be compared and
contrasted to show the differences in word usage, word connotation, and to find which story is written better. The initial pair...show more content...
The word "plummeted" as defined in the American Heritage Dictionary "is to fall straight down; plunge".
The two words are close in meaning; however, "plummeted" is a better word for the sheer reason that the reader can directly visualize the vultures
dive toward earth. When the word "plummeted" is heard a person thinks of plunging to death or fall at in incredible rate. "Plummeted" is much more
dramatic and defining then the word "planed." The word "Planned" could have various images connected with it. "Planed" leaves the reader too many
options when visualizing the vultures decent to the ground. For example the reader might visualize the vulture gliding down to the ground or
zigzagging to the ground. The word 'Plummeted" is a better defined and more dramatic word. Making the sentence, "On the far bank of the stream
Macomber could see, above the trees, vultures circling and plummeting down," the better sentence of the two.
The next two sentences, "'You Bitch,' he said," from the "Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "'Why not let up on the bitchery just a little, Margot,' Macomber
said, cutting the eland steak and putting some mashed potato, gravy and carrot on the down–turned fork that tined through the piece of meat," again
have similarities. For example, in each sentence the husband is calling his wife a bitch of sorts; however, it is the use of this word that makes these

Landlady by Roald Dahl and Chemistry by Graham Swift
There are lots of great short stories out there, but in my opinion, both 'Chemistry' by Graham Swift and 'The Landlady' by Roald Dahl are two of the
most unique and effective stories. They share both similarities and differences throughout. Comparing and contrasting the way the authors use their
inimitable writing style to achieve their intentions in the story will give us more idea how these stories are alike and distinct.

In the beginning , Billy thought the landlady was 'terribly nice',which he was quite grateful to have such a nice landlady who give him a
well–appointed service, but as the conversations go on, Billy was then frightened by her weird and creepy contents, he 'sat there staring straight ahead
of him into the far corner of the room, biting his lower lip.' tells the readers that he's begin to frightened and suspect landlady, foreshadowing the readers
that she might be doing something that couldn't be trusted by Billy.
In another way, these two stories are different because the authors have been using different perspective when narrating the story. In 'Chemistry',
author's written the story in the word of narrator, mixing both the perspective of adult and young boy's. Line" My father's death was a far less remote
event than my grandfather's but no more explicable, I was only seven." can be a good example. Almost the whole story was written in past tense,
added to the effect of recalling. He's shown a grown up man recalling memories when he was back in 7–10 years old. This kind of writing style makes
readers felt more personal, because the subject is 'I', when reading out the story, readers will feel like they're experiencing the narrators' life, as if they
are the narrator. Also, another interesting fact about this kind of writing style is that if I were to look at the same events in other character's
perspective, it might be another whole different story because

Compare And Contrast Short Stories
Short Stories Compare and Contrast Essay The stories are the same but also very different. Both stories are very interesting. They have kind of a
similar meaning but have total different meanings. In both stories the characters face death to one it was expected and to the other it was not. The
stories compare in many ways, they contrast in many ways, and they are similiar in many ways. The short story "The Story Of An Hour" describes the
series of emotions Louise Mallard endures after hearing of the death of her husband, Brently, reported to have died in a railroad accident. Mrs.
Mallard suffers from heart problems; therefore, her sister and her husband's friend attempt to inform her of the horrific news in a gentle way. Mrs.
Mallard immediately mourns the loss of her husband; however, as her grief comes to an end she makes way to her upstairs room. Mrs. Mallard
locks herself inside; a weird feeling came over her. Confusion followed immediately after. She begins to feel an unexpected sense of exhilaration,
yelling, "Free! Body and soul free". She began thinking of all the springs and summers she would enjoy without her husband around. Her sudden
rush of exhilaration is what she believes is a benefit of his death. Her sister begs Louise to open the door; she is scared that Louise will become ill.
As Louise and her sister descend the staircase, Brently enters the house. Louise suffers a heart attack upon receiving the shock that he has not died, and

A Good Short Story By David Sedaris
"A good Short Story would take me out of myself and then stuff me back in, outsized, now, and uneasy with the fit." This quote by David Sedaris,
who is and author of short stories, shows that when reading there is a want to rethink life and explore other ways of living. This comes from the author
adding conflicts through marxism to make readers think about their own lives. Many short stories , Flowers for Algernon, The Ones Who Walk Away
From Omelas, and Lamb to the Slaughter, authors give us a false reality with many conflicts through marxism. Marxism is a theory that is used to
look at conflicts and imbalances of power in literature and society. Some examples are educated and uneducated, freedom and captivity, and authority
and peasantry. These are all conflicts with imbalances of power. An examination of short stories reveals that authors over play conflicts in the hope to
further develop stories and intrigue readers by making them drew ideas and apply it to their own lives through marxism.
The story Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes shows that a mentally disabled man, Charlie, in a society where learning is highly valued. Charlie
receives an offer to have surgery to increase his mental state, be the best he can be, from doctors who want to expand the human brain. With this he
becomes more educated than the doctors and teachers and and gets a new perspective on the world, more closely the people around him. This first
quote shows how we acted before the

Essay on Short Stories and Poetry
Short Stories and Poetry There are many different forms of writing that all fall under the name literature. These different ways to create literature are
often categorized into specific genres. Some of the genres have more in common with each other than others. Two genres, theshort story and the poem,
share many similar aspects. Both the short story and the poem can successfully send powerful messages or tell complex stories in a very short amount
of words. Both genres contain carefully manipulated language that quickly yet effectively establishes the meaning of the short story or poem. Point of
view is a prominent aspect in controlling short stories and poetry. The works are thus often told in the first...show more content...
Short literary works are confined to the boundaries on length according to their specific genre; they don't have time for lengthy or slow introductions.
William Faulkner's "A Rose of Emily" (p. 443) begins immediately with a startling statement about Miss Emily's death. Faulkner creates a first
sentence that describes how "our whole town went to her funeral" (1), using of course the first person form of "we" (28, 43, 46, etc...) The narrator
is most likely one of the townspeople who represents the point of view of the entire town. Through the use of plural first person narration, the author
makes the reader feel as if though they are part of the story, grasping his or her interest more quickly. Faulkner employs this first person narration in
the first sentence of his story, thus immediately capturing the reader's attention. The reader's engagement in the story also adds to its emotionality. By
feeling as though he or she is a part of the story, the reader often feels sadness, joy and other emotions with the characters of the story. When the
townspeople were "surprised when Homer Barron...was gone" (46), the use of "we" (46) forces the reader to feel the same confusion and shock that
the townspeople do. The first person helps to enrich the variability and appeal of the short story.
This use of first person to strengthen the feeling of the

Short Story Of Short Stories
One thing that's great about short stories is how quickly they can ruin your life. Maybe you start reading one over your lunch break and, if it's the right
one, before that peanut butter cup you brought for dessert even has a chance to finish its melting shape–shift into some kind of sugary cement, the
whole world has been destroyed around you and then rebuilt, and nothing is quite the same again. This happens whether you like it or not. Great
stories practice this violent beauty on you in a variety of ways: some by making an absurd world familiar (or vice versa), some with a slow burn,
some with a voice that colonizes your thoughts. Some do it quietly, almost without you even noticing, and some do it with high wire acts of
imagination or intellect that make you into a breathless witness. The trick, then, is finding the right story, one that is capable of such a thing. This
is no easy task. Tastes differ, of course, and it can be confusing to spot the small boat of a great story on the wide sea of fiction. What any reader
can offer you in terms of guidance is actually the same thing that any good writer can offer you with the story itself: a way of saying, This is what
moved me and made me feel strange and alive in some way; here, why don't you give it a try? In that spirit and in no particular order, here are ten
short stories you might've missed that ambushed me with their odd wonder: 1."The Zero Meter Diving Team" by Jim Shepard (BOMB Magazine)

On the other hand, how do we account for the audience reaction being contrastingly different with some viewing a particular piece of literature as a
tragedy and others viewing it as a comedy? This is where the environment influences come into play. Not every behavior we have is innate, B.F.
Skinner (1904–1990) suggested a strong role of learning in behavior and that experience shapes behavior by pairing stimuli and reinforcers, i.e. any
event that strengthens the behavior that it follows (Kolb and Whishaw). Particular experiences with tragedy that we have throughout our lives are
paired with particular stimuli and reinforcers, like seeing certain types of video clips on the news, and thereby elicit certain behaviors from us. In
the book, The World's Greatest Short Stories, analysis of the stories for tragic elements based on the theory we were studying lead to quite
contrasting views from my fellow classmates and myself. One of the stories that was found to have controversial audience responses was, The
Necklace, written by Guy de Maupassant. The story told a beautiful young lady, Matilda, who was never satisfied with her meagre standard of living
and desired more material wealth. The tragic flaw arises when she borrow a supposedly expensive diamond necklace from a friend and loses it. She
and her husband decide to lie and replace the necklace in secret, rather than own up to the mistake. In the end, Matilda and her husband spend most of
their lives working off

Poem Vs Short Story
The essential difference between a poem and a short story is the difference of scope. So, poems are short and they, briefly, tell you how the author is
feeling about in a few words, while short stories could be written by the author at any moment with a plot, themes, character development, setting etc.
The play "Naked Lunch" by Michael Hollinger is about a man named Vernon and a female named Lucy. They used to be a couple but they are no
longer together. When they were sitting down to eat, Vernon started asking her the reasons of why she did not want to eat steak. He was making a big
problem of it. Vernon finally ends up making Lucy eat the steak by yelling at her. Consequently, she ate the steak because she was scared.
A play can be long or short, it all depends on what the author wants to transmit to his or her audience. The time is essentially important. In a play the
characters need to talk each other to have an act; on the other hand, in short stories the narrator explains the situation, he is the one making and telling
us the story.
Most good stories start with a fundamental characteristics: the initial situation, the conflict, the climax, suspense, and conclusion. In "Girl" by Jamaica
Kincaid, the story does not seems to be real since it...show more content...
A short story has characters, a main idea (the plot), the conflict of the story. They both have an emotional respond from the reader. In "I could not stop
for Death" by Emily Dickinson, the author gives us a clue of what the poem will be about at the beginning. This makes it easier to understand; how the
author begins it differences him from others. As in "Naked Lunch" by Michael Hollinger; I honestly thought that this couple would get back together
since they were having diner, but eventually it ended up in an unexpected way. It was not the ending I expected honestly. Dickinson in the poetry
focuses too much on death. It tells us that death can come to us when you least expect

What makes up a good fiction story? In a fiction short story the reader wants to be drawn in and connect with the story being told. As the reader we
are looking for action, anticipation, or even go on an adventure with characters throughout the story. We also want to be able to bond with these
characters so that it feels as if we are experiencing their journey or struggles with them, even if it is fictional. According to Joseph Kelly's introduction
to his textbook, The Seagull Reader: Stories, his definition of what makes a short story, this is what a good fictional story should be made up of, and the
crucial elements that need to exist for all of this to happen. Such as, point of view, characters, plot, setting, and symbolism etc. After...show more

This shows that Sosra can be portrayed as a madman but all he ultimately wants his to be with his love. This truly shows what passion he has to
finally find out the remedy to reverse what he has done and rest in piece with the one he loves. This is a great example of his true character. Setting in a
short story is where the events and actions take place. But it is sometimes beyond just the time and the place for where the story is being told. For
example, as a reader the setting can also establish atmosphere and the mood, which helps us feel and relate a little bit more with what is happening
and the characters. "Setting might also serve as a window into the emotional state of a character, this technique is called projection" (Kelly xxii).
Because of the type of setting a character is in can effect the way they feel for example in The Ring of Thoth John falls asleep in a far corner in the

he had changed. I'm fed up with the way he is treating me, I know I deserve better. How did I know that the day I decided to confront him was the

He was dead.
After Daniel's death I didn't leave my room for about a week, I didn't want to face the world, I didn't want to talk to anyone, I just wanted to be alone

Short Story Short Essay

  • 1. Short Story Short Essay The sun beamed through the open window, embracing me in the warmth and comfort. My plane had just arrived in Paris, France. It was a peaceful walk to baggage claim when some random girl interrupted my daydream. "Dixie, Dixie Lloyd is that you?" some dark haired girl said to me. I looked at her confused as she laughed. Ah, yes I did remember her. My, my she was the most annoying girl I have ever met. She kept trying to talk to me asking me all these questions and following me wherever I went. Luckily I lost her in a crowd of people just as I was about to leave the airport. Ok, so here's a little back story for you, so long story short... It was a year ago I visited here and met Clement Perez. I was new and had nowhere to live, she offered a place and I took it. Long story short she ended up going to a mental hospital for being exceedingly crazy and trying to hurt many people including myself. I stepped outside and let the sun soak up inside me. Looking around I saw my friend, Andre Lefevre, waiting for me leaned up beside his car How I know him is to long of a story to tell so let's just say I met him the day I almost died. We said our hellos as he brought me to my hotel which I would staying at for the next two weeks. The bellhop brought my bags to my room and Andre bid me a farewell. It was around nine o'clock pm when I got settled. Even though it was only around three o'clock in the afternoon I didn't want to be tired the next day. So I just decided to go to sleep. • 2. Essay about Short Story Short Story The sudden, severe storm caught me totally unaware. I was walking down Peppers Road when the dark clouds started to build. I looked around as I huddled under a large, dead oak tree which offered me little or no protection from the razor–sharp rain. Almost all of the houses on this abandoned street were too badly damaged for me to take shelter in, except for one. The house loomed impressive and morbid in the greenish–black sky. A flash of lightning briefly illuminated the house and I saw that the windows were broken, but the structure seemed sound. I started to think what I should do; my options were to either stay under this great dead oak tree risking getting hit by lightning...show more content... There was a crash from upstairs. My heart began to race. Who was it? What was it? I could only hear my heart as I listened for another sound. The silence throbbed in my ears; I stood at the bottom of the staircase. The sounds had come from upstairs. My curiosity and swallowed my fears and nervously ascended the battered and dilapidated stairs, not knowing what I was going to encounter. On the second floor I found a bathroom furnished in an old murky green with scale on it, I left it undisturbed as the floor looked unsafe. I found several bedrooms laden with cloth–covered antiques, clothes that might have been beautiful at one time, and tarnished jewellery. The walls and floor where all wooden, they were illuminated by the constant stream of lightning flashes that came through the stained window that towered over me. At the end of the second floor, I found yet another stair well. This one was dark and coated with lacy spider webs. It led to what must have been the children's floor at one point. There was a play room that took up most of the space, along with two bedrooms with dainty furniture, and the nurse's room. What I mistook for a closet at first was really a narrow flight of stairs that lead into the attic. A giant rat scampered across my feet. Its beady eyes glowed red in the flicker of my lighter. It hissed at me. I Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. What Makes a Good Short Story What Makes a Good Short Story and How Successful is R.K. Narayan in Portraying the Character of Swami in the Short Story 'A Hero'? Nadine Gordimer – 'Short story writers see by the light of the flash; theirs is the art of the only thing we can be sure of – the present moment.' This is a quote from short story writer Nadine Gordimer; referring to how the art of short story writing is to get straight to the point and write everything as it is. This is an art and those who cannot perfect it should admire it instead. Edgar Allan Poe – 'In the whole composition there should be no word written of which the tendency, direct or indirect, is not to the pre–established design; and by such means, with such skill and care, a picture is at...show more content... This is an example of changing the reader's emotions in a matter of a few seconds and it has a positive effect on the feelings towards the story. The story has to have a fast pace to it, meaning that there are no slow starts or moments of the book where the reader can put it down. This means that there should be something humourous, exciting or out of the ordinary that will keep the reader gripping the book and hoping that the story will never end. R.K. Narayan uses irony cleverly in his short story to keep up the fast pace and to keep the reader smiling. The best example of irony R.K. Narayan uses is the actual title of his short story, 'A Hero'. This is due to the fact that throughout the story there are two examples of boys who are not heroes, but are quite hilariously the opposite: cowards. At the start of the story Swami's father reads to him an article from his newspaper, reading 'News is to hand of the bravery of a village lad who, while returning home by the jungle path, came face to face with a tiger' and then the article goes on to describe the fight the boy endured with the tiger and his flight up a tree, where he stayed for half a day till some people came that way and killed the tiger. This boy was by no means a hero, but a coward who just survived his encounter with a tiger by climbing up a tree and with luck some people came along, who managed to kill the tiger. The second example of his not–so–much 'a hero' Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 5. Short Story Compare/Contrast Fiction Essay ENGL 102: Composition and Literature MLA Outline THESIS: In "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell and "Young Goodman Brown" by Nathaniel Hawthorne, imagery and characterization are employed to illustrate the ever present inner darkness of humanity. However, the authors set very different themes in how their protagonists reflect upon and respond to being faced with it. Both men must choose whether they will reject and confront evil or simply abide it with apathy. I. The dark imagery used in both stories convert evil into a nearly tangible entity. a. The lack of visibility in these stories corresponds to the fear felt by both men. b. The dense jungle/forest instills a sense of chaos that...show more content... He offers the younger his staff to help speed his pace (Hawthorne, 264). He even shares a jolly banter with Goody Cloyse, an elderly woman whom young Goodman Brown recognizes, and likewise, offers his staff to aid her (Hawthorne, 266). Old Goodman Brown also gives an articulate counter for every argument young Goodman Brown has to cut their walk short and return home. For example, when young Goodman Brown boasts the honesty and goodness of his father and grandfather, the traveler responds that "I have been well acquainted with your family... They were my good friends" (Hawthorne, 264). The fact that young Goodman Brown had never heard of such a communion spoken of in his family is almost convincing to him of its plausibility. Connell also masks General Zaroff's evil nature with an air of friendliness and respectability. From the moment that Rainsford appears at the front door, the general is welcoming and kind. He gives Rainsford food, shelter, and offers his own clothes for Rainsford to wear (Connell, 4). During the course of their conversation, General Zaroff explains to Rainsford that they are kindred spirits as fellow hunters. Having dominated every prey he has ever stalked, Zaroff has become bored with traditional hunting and extols the merit of a new game that he has devised, "it supplies me with the most exciting hunting in the world. No other hunting compares with it for an instant" (Connell, 6). The general is sure that, as a

  • 7. A Formalist Approach On A Short Story LATE PASS Michael Wraa Professor Joyce Heyman English 110 15 February 2015 A Formalist Approach to a Short Story There are so many different things one can learn from reading a story. Stories vary in length but it seems that your appetite for reading will gauge the kind of stories you elect to read. People who enjoy long thought out complex reading will enjoy much longer published works than what a short story has to offer. However there is a large population in the world of people who do not want to spend days on end reading a novel that is several hundred pages long and takes days to convey a simple message. In fact, many people want just the opposite in their reading. Many readers want a story that is short, sweet, and to the point. Something that they don't need to spend hours or weeks on end reading but instead can get the exact same message or meaning from instead of having to spend a ridiculous amount of time reading a much larger work. Authors often want readers use the Formalist approach when reading these short stories as authors use words to convey the same message or meaning in less text than a much longer published work with hundreds of pages, it does this by using the text itself as a canvas for creativity. The Formalist approach is a great tool when it comes to writing short stories, and its use in Good Country People by Flannery O'Connor is classic example of how the Formalist Approach can be so effective in such a short story. Authors are incredibly Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Short Stories : Personal Responsibility Do you feel an obligation to think about other people's welfare? If you do, how far does that responsibility extend? Are you responsible for a sibling, a neighbor, or even a stranger across the world? The short stories I read help me think about the world around me and enlighten my understanding of my personal responsibility to others. First, these short stories show personal responsibility by describing to what degree we are responsible for the weaker or oppressed members of society. Second, the short stories I read helped me think about to what extent should we be driven by personal responsibility to act with compassion, empathy, and concern for others. Finally, short stories exemplify how we are personally responsible for our friends and how we live our own lives. First, short stories show personal responsibility by describing to what degree we are responsible for the weaker or oppressed members of society.Throughout the short stories, I have seen how the weaker and oppressed member of society are being helped. For example, in the short story, the "Scarlet Ibis", the narrator has a responsibility, given to him by his mother, to help his younger brother who cannot care for himself. As the narrator says in the story, "It seemed so hopeless from the beginning that it's a miracle I didn't give up. But all of us must have something or someone to be proud of, and Doodle had become mine. I did not know then that pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed that bears two Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Essay on Short stories Essay The short stories "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "The Short Happy Life of Francis Mocomber" were both written by world renowned author Ernest Hemingway. The two stories are written completely unrelated to each other; however, both stories have vast similarities in the time and place in which they take place. Hemingway is a writer that is very methodical in his word choices. When reading these two stories a second time the reader finds considerable differences in the writing style the author uses in each story. To demonstrate, three sentences from each story will be compared and contrasted to show the differences in word usage, word connotation, and to find which story is written better. The initial pair...show more content... The word "plummeted" as defined in the American Heritage Dictionary "is to fall straight down; plunge". The two words are close in meaning; however, "plummeted" is a better word for the sheer reason that the reader can directly visualize the vultures dive toward earth. When the word "plummeted" is heard a person thinks of plunging to death or fall at in incredible rate. "Plummeted" is much more dramatic and defining then the word "planed." The word "Planned" could have various images connected with it. "Planed" leaves the reader too many options when visualizing the vultures decent to the ground. For example the reader might visualize the vulture gliding down to the ground or zigzagging to the ground. The word 'Plummeted" is a better defined and more dramatic word. Making the sentence, "On the far bank of the stream Macomber could see, above the trees, vultures circling and plummeting down," the better sentence of the two. The next two sentences, "'You Bitch,' he said," from the "Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "'Why not let up on the bitchery just a little, Margot,' Macomber said, cutting the eland steak and putting some mashed potato, gravy and carrot on the down–turned fork that tined through the piece of meat," again have similarities. For example, in each sentence the husband is calling his wife a bitch of sorts; however, it is the use of this word that makes these sentences Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Compare and Contrast Two Short Stories Compare and Contrast Two Short Stories–– Landlady by Roald Dahl and Chemistry by Graham Swift There are lots of great short stories out there, but in my opinion, both 'Chemistry' by Graham Swift and 'The Landlady' by Roald Dahl are two of the most unique and effective stories. They share both similarities and differences throughout. In another way, these two stories are different because the authors have been using different perspective when narrating the story. In 'Chemistry', author's written the story in the word of narrator, mixing both the perspective of adult and young boy's. Line" My father's death was a far less remote event than my grandfather's but no more explicable, I was only seven." can be a good example. Almost the whole story was written in past tense, added to the effect of recalling. He's shown a grown up man recalling memories when he was back in 7–10 years old. This kind of writing style makes readers felt more personal, because the subject is 'I', when reading out the story, readers will feel like they're experiencing the narrators' life, as if they are the narrator. Also, another interesting fact about this kind of writing style is that if I were to look at the same events in other character's perspective, it might be another whole different story because Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Compare And Contrast Short Stories Short Stories Compare and Contrast Essay The stories are the same but also very different. Both stories are very interesting. They have kind of a similar meaning but have total different meanings. In both stories the characters face death to one it was expected and to the other it was not. The stories compare in many ways, they contrast in many ways, and they are similiar in many ways. • 13. A Good Short Story By David Sedaris "A good Short Story would take me out of myself and then stuff me back in, outsized, now, and uneasy with the fit." This quote by David Sedaris, who is and author of short stories, shows that when reading there is a want to rethink life and explore other ways of living. This comes from the author adding conflicts through marxism to make readers think about their own lives. Many short stories , Flowers for Algernon, The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas, and Lamb to the Slaughter, authors give us a false reality with many conflicts through marxism. Marxism is a theory that is used to look at conflicts and imbalances of power in literature and society. Some examples are educated and uneducated, freedom and captivity, and authority and peasantry. These are all conflicts with imbalances of power. An examination of short stories reveals that authors over play conflicts in the hope to further develop stories and intrigue readers by making them drew ideas and apply it to their own lives through marxism. The story Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes shows that a mentally disabled man, Charlie, in a society where learning is highly valued. Charlie receives an offer to have surgery to increase his mental state, be the best he can be, from doctors who want to expand the human brain. With this he becomes more educated than the doctors and teachers and and gets a new perspective on the world, more closely the people around him. • 14. Essay on Short Stories and Poetry Short Stories and Poetry There are many different forms of writing that all fall under the name literature. These different ways to create literature are often categorized into specific genres. Some of the genres have more in common with each other than others. Two genres, theshort story and the poem, share many similar aspects. Both the short story and the poem can successfully send powerful messages or tell complex stories in a very short amount of words. Both genres contain carefully manipulated language that quickly yet effectively establishes the meaning of the short story or poem. Point of view is a prominent aspect in controlling short stories and poetry. Faulkner creates a first sentence that describes how "our whole town went to her funeral" (1), using of course the first person form of "we" (28, 43, 46, etc...) The narrator is most likely one of the townspeople who represents the point of view of the entire town. Through the use of plural first person narration, the author makes the reader feel as if though they are part of the story, grasping his or her interest more quickly. Faulkner employs this first person narration in the first sentence of his story, thus immediately capturing the reader's attention. The reader's engagement in the story also adds to its emotionality. By feeling as though he or she is a part of the story, the reader often feels sadness, joy and other emotions with the characters of the story. When the townspeople were "surprised when Homer Barron...was gone" (46), the use of "we" (46) forces the reader to feel the same confusion and shock that the townspeople do. The first person helps to enrich the variability and appeal of the short story. This use of first person to strengthen the feeling of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Short Story Of Short Stories One thing that's great about short stories is how quickly they can ruin your life. Maybe you start reading one over your lunch break and, if it's the right one, before that peanut butter cup you brought for dessert even has a chance to finish its melting shape–shift into some kind of sugary cement, the whole world has been destroyed around you and then rebuilt, and nothing is quite the same again. This happens whether you like it or not. Great stories practice this violent beauty on you in a variety of ways: some by making an absurd world familiar (or vice versa), some with a slow burn, some with a voice that colonizes your thoughts. Some do it quietly, almost without you even noticing, and some do it with high wire acts of imagination or intellect that make you into a breathless witness. The trick, then, is finding the right story, one that is capable of such a thing. This is no easy task. Tastes differ, of course, and it can be confusing to spot the small boat of a great story on the wide sea of fiction. What any reader can offer you in terms of guidance is actually the same thing that any good writer can offer you with the story itself: a way of saying, This is what moved me and made me feel strange and alive in some way; here, why don't you give it a try? In that spirit and in no particular order, here are ten short stories you might've missed that ambushed me with their odd wonder: 1."The Zero Meter Diving Team" by Jim Shepard (BOMB Magazine) This curious, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. On the other hand, how do we account for the audience reaction being contrastingly different with some viewing a particular piece of literature as a tragedy and others viewing it as a comedy? This is where the environment influences come into play. Not every behavior we have is innate, B.F. Skinner (1904–1990) suggested a strong role of learning in behavior and that experience shapes behavior by pairing stimuli and reinforcers, i.e. any event that strengthens the behavior that it follows (Kolb and Whishaw). Particular experiences with tragedy that we have throughout our lives are paired with particular stimuli and reinforcers, like seeing certain types of video clips on the news, and thereby elicit certain behaviors from us. In the book, The World's Greatest Short Stories, analysis of the stories for tragic elements based on the theory we were studying lead to quite contrasting views from my fellow classmates and myself. One of the stories that was found to have controversial audience responses was, The Necklace, written by Guy de Maupassant. The story told a beautiful young lady, Matilda, who was never satisfied with her meagre standard of living and desired more material wealth. The tragic flaw arises when she borrow a supposedly expensive diamond necklace from a friend and loses it. She and her husband decide to lie and replace the necklace in secret, rather than own up to the mistake. • 17. Poem Vs Short Story The essential difference between a poem and a short story is the difference of scope. So, poems are short and they, briefly, tell you how the author is feeling about in a few words, while short stories could be written by the author at any moment with a plot, themes, character development, setting etc. The play "Naked Lunch" by Michael Hollinger is about a man named Vernon and a female named Lucy. They used to be a couple but they are no longer together. When they were sitting down to eat, Vernon started asking her the reasons of why she did not want to eat steak. He was making a big problem of it. Vernon finally ends up making Lucy eat the steak by yelling at her. Consequently, she ate the steak because she was scared. A play can be long or short, it all depends on what the author wants to transmit to his or her audience. The time is essentially important. In a play the characters need to talk each other to have an act; on the other hand, in short stories the narrator explains the situation, he is the one making and telling us the story. Most good stories start with a fundamental characteristics: the initial situation, the conflict, the climax, suspense, and conclusion. In "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid, the story does not seems to be real since it...show more content... A short story has characters, a main idea (the plot), the conflict of the story. They both have an emotional respond from the reader. In "I could not stop for Death" by Emily Dickinson, the author gives us a clue of what the poem will be about at the beginning. This makes it easier to understand; how the author begins it differences him from others. As in "Naked Lunch" by Michael Hollinger; I honestly thought that this couple would get back together since they were having diner, but eventually it ended up in an unexpected way. It was not the ending I expected honestly. Dickinson in the poetry focuses too much on death. It tells us that death can come to us when you least expect Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 19. What makes up a good fiction story? In a fiction short story the reader wants to be drawn in and connect with the story being told. As the reader we are looking for action, anticipation, or even go on an adventure with characters throughout the story. We also want to be able to bond with these characters so that it feels as if we are experiencing their journey or struggles with them, even if it is fictional. According to Joseph Kelly's introduction to his textbook, The Seagull Reader: Stories, his definition of what makes a short story, this is what a good fictional story should be made up of, and the crucial elements that need to exist for all of this to happen. Such as, point of view, characters, plot, setting, and symbolism etc. After...show more content... It is now done. All else is as nothing. I have found my quest. The old curse is broken. This truly shows what passion he has to finally find out the remedy to reverse what he has done and rest in piece with the one he loves. This is a great example of his true character. Setting in a short story is where the events and actions take place. But it is sometimes beyond just the time and the place for where the story is being told. For example, as a reader the setting can also establish atmosphere and the mood, which helps us feel and relate a little bit more with what is happening and the characters. "Setting might also serve as a window into the emotional state of a character, this technique is called projection" (Kelly xxii). Because of the type of setting a character is in can effect the way they feel for example in The Ring of Thoth John falls asleep in a far corner in the Museum after a long day. But when he woke up the mood and atmosphere was completely different for that the Museum was now closed. And all of a sudden the mood changed because he saw a light in the distance coming closer. Short Story English coursework The End of the Road It all started to go downhill when my boyfriend started speaking to another girl behind my back, sending text messages and meeting up with her for a 'chat' as he used to say. She looked up at me through the tears in her eyes and I knew just from the look she gave me that it was more than a broken bone. He was dead. After Daniel's death I didn't leave my room for about a week, I didn't want to face the world, I didn't want to talk to anyone, I just wanted to be alone with my thoughts. I went on my laptop about a week after, I didn't look at my phone or my laptop because I didn't want any sympathy comments as I knew it would only make me feel worse, but that night I just wanted to see what people had put on his Facebook wall, the moment I logged onto my account, I had thousands of notifications. I switched my laptop straight off; I knew I shouldn't have gone on in the first place. The next day was his funeral, I didn't think I would be able to cope, but I knew I would have lots of people there to support me, but I knew it would be harder for his family than it would be for
