Language and Literacy
EDKL102– Assessment Task 1
Essay– What is Language? What is Literacy? How are they different?
Teachers must have a sound knowledge and appreciation for language and literacy to be able to make the two concepts a valuable part of a student's
curriculum.
This essay will explore the importance of language and literature in a students learning and how they assist in enhancing their development. Most
importantly the similarities and differences will be distinguished so that the relationship between the two can be understood. Defining both language
and literacy as different entities, but also closely linked concepts, allows readers to bridge together their affiliation when taught to children in a
classroom environment. We can see literacy...show more content...
Vygotsky believed that by the time a child enters school, they use language not only for communicative purposes, but also for thinking and planning
(Daniels at el, 2007 pg.138).
Literacy is control of secondary use of language. It can be seen as being able to apply language to "use", "function" and "control". We all use
language everyday; however literacy is the act of applying our knowledge of language. We use language to produce a range of modes for different
purposes and audiences. Literacy is used to develop language and use it, for practical and purposeful situations and work. There is little use for
possessing the knowledge of language if we cannot use and apply it in our everyday lives to gain knowledge and understanding (Kervin 2010).
As educators, we must be aware that our knowledge of literacy and how we convey it to our children is an essential and ongoing process that is
constantly adapting. The importance of applying the student's knowledge of language to literacy is crucial as it plays a crucial part in a child's
education, development and life skills. If a child cannot apply their language skills to literacy they will find it

The Importance Of Literacy In Daily Life
Literacy has changed the way that people live since the beginning of time. From cavemen communicating with drawings and hand signals to the
earliest form of Latin. At that time reading was a skill that very few had. It was believed to be that only the wealthy and the noble class were taught
this skill. Peasants did not need it in their everyday life. Reading was considered a privilege and was also used to suppress the lower class. Knowledge is
power. For me, this knowledge has molded the way that I live and communicate. Everyday our lives are affected by literacy and most people do not
even notice it. When I read a menu at a restaurant or a book from a library I do not realize how unbelievable it is to read such things. I do not notice
how amazing and extraordinary it is to be able to have this privilege. Literature is everywhere and it not only changes our lives for the better but it
also changes who you are and how you choose to see things.
When I was younger and I learned how to read, I did not realize that I was learning something that would change my life. I will never be able to
recall ever learning this skill nor will I ever be able to pinpoint when it actually began to help me in my everyday life. What I do know is that
without literacy living life would not be easy. When I go shopping and purchase a new shirt I do not think twice about what the shirt says. When I go
out with my friends I do not hesitate before I type out a text to my mother telling her where I am

Language and Literacy Essay
Literacy is the ability to read and write. These are both fundamental skills that every child should master. It leads to success in K–12 school,
post–secondary school, the ability to compete in the job market, and participation in democratic process (Wei, Blackorby, & Schiller, 2011). Learning
how to read and write however is a very complex process that requires an understanding of both oral and written language. To beginreading children
need a strong back ground in the language he or she is trying to read. Knowledge of basic grammar rules and a big vocabulary help children make
meaning of what they are reading. Without this knowledge words can be seemingly random, and the reader has a harder time predicting what an
unfamiliar word...show more content...
If a child reads a sentence like 'she can over to my house last night', knowledge of grammar should make him or her stop and reread knowing that the
sentence didn't make sense and that 'can' was really the word 'came'. Without this knowledge however the sentence become illogical and might through
off the comprehension of the entire story.
When a child has language delays however this can impact their literacy in big ways. Children who have been identified with language delays have
lower scores in reading and spelling when compared to non–delayed peers in first grade (Bishop & Adams, 1990). Research also indicates that early
literacy difficulties will most likely persist over time (McGinty & Justice, 2009). These two facts should be great areas of concern for both parents
and teachers during the early childhood years when the foundation for literacy skills is being laid down. If a child is showing signs of significant
language delays the earlier is it detected and the child gets appropriate help and support the better. It would be very difficult for children to read or
write beyond their overall language skills.
Children often write what they hear and know. If they have a very small vocabulary, with improper grammar structure, that is often how they will
write. 'I hear dog', might seem like a perfectly logical sentence to a child with low literacy skills. Increasing that child's knowledge base however can
turn that sentence

Media Literacy in the Classroom Essay
Media Literacy in the Classroom
Works Cited Missing
Media literacy is defined as "the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and communicate messages in a variety of forms" (Know TV). In more practical
terms, media literacy means questioning the media and interpreting its many messages accordingly. Students are exposed to mass quantities of media
on a daily basis. They watch television and movies, read books, newspapers, and magazines, listen to music, and in more recent years explore the
Internet. This extreme exposure to media outlets leads to the need for education about the media. Media literacy is one way to help educate students
about issues in which they are already actively engaged. Media literacy should be implemented into...show more content...
Too often, people do not question or challenge the views media presents to us and simply accept the views at face value. Politicians rely on this during
campaign elections. The popularity of negative advertisements depreciating opposition parties has grown tremendously over the years because they are
often successful. The public embraces the negative media messages, then votes accordingly. Oftentimes, people do not even know they have been
acted–upon by the media.
Media literate people do not have quite as much trouble interpreting similar messages, for they are aware of the pervasive nature of the media. Media
literacy courses allow people to hone their critical thinking skills and make informed decisions. These people are able to distinguish between fact and
fiction, or at least recognize the differentiation between the two. They are able to examine the messages supplied to them by the media and in turn
come to more knowledgeable decisions concerning politics and culture in society. They are able to see that the media simply represent the political
arena from one viewpoint and that there may be more to the story then first it seems.
The information learned through media literacy can also be applied to the second argument that focuses upon the influence media exercises on our
values and behaviors. Media is probably the most powerful influence on teen attitudes and beliefs in American society. The abundance of media
exposure contributes

What Does Literacy Mean To You Essay
John Green once said, "Great books help you understand, and they help you feel understood." Literacy, at least to me. is the ability to understand
and to be understood. Words have no limits they can travel across borders and oceans. They also hold a tremendous amount of power. Words can
change the way we think, affect the way we feel, and inspire us to do more. Words can shape our entire world but more than that they can provide us
a reflection of ourselves. Words bring comfort to us that there is a single person at some point in time somewhere out there in this vast world who
knows what it is we go through, the struggles we face, and the things we find joy in. When you read something you can relate to it's like a hand is

Importance Of Technology Literacy
In today's world, we live in an era where technology is becoming more and more essential in every workplace and school. Technology literacy plays an
importance in students learning because it allows them to work independently, collaborate in groups, build effective technology skills, and learn how to
communicate, interpret and share information, data and ideas (Maryland TeacherTechnology Standards, n.d).
Since it is important for all students to be technologically literate, the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), has developed technology
literacy standards that identify with what students should be able to master before graduating middle school. Primarily these standards emphasize the
importance of students learning how technology is connected to them and their communities. As well as how they can learn and collaborate with
others using technology, how they can express their ideas and share their thoughts and creativity, how to use technology for research and how to use
technology for problem–solving and making informed decisions (Maryland Teacher Technology Standards).
To make sure that students are meeting each standard, it is crucial for educators to strategically plan lessons that address the standards and engage
students with the appropriate content, technology tools, and projects that help build their technology literacy skills.
For example;

Why Literacy Is Important Essay
The Importance of Literacy Literacy has made my life extremely better in numerous ways. Learning how to perfect the skills to read and write was
the best decision I have ever made. Now that I have mastered the use of literacy, reading and writing has taken me places that I never dreamed of
being. Through literacy, I began understand the world more. I also have gained a greater understanding to reading and constructing writing assignments
academically. Mastering the skills of reading and writing has created a structured path towards a better comprehension that I have used to advance in
my current career. Finally, learning to be proficient in literacy has granted me the opportunity to adventure into new things, new information, and new
methods to solve a problem and achieve goals.
Gaining a Better Understanding Through Literacy Although I enjoyed attending college, reading and writing seemed to be a tedious chore to me. I
loathed the thought of reading extensive articles and constructing writing assignments for class because I never understood what the instructors
expected from me. However, I thoroughly enjoyed reading for leisure and writing short stories, writing lyrics to songs, and creating speeches for
personal use. In college, I never really invested the time or effort to perfect reading...show more content...

college play a central role in their ability to enter their chosen career and succeed in their

My Personal Experience With Literacy
Literacy is defined as being literate, that is, being able to read and write in a language. My personal experience with literacy began at an early age,
at the age of 4 when I began to sit and read words and letters in the back of my mother's car. Soon enough, she would bring me a magazine called
"Majed" which, in the 90's, was a popular magazine. With this, I began even more interested in reading and writing and reviewed every word in the
magazine associated with each of the short pictured stories. It was the first memory I deeply recall of literacy and it was what laid the foundation for my
personal love of reading and writing. The methodology used for this is an interview. There are three interviews which are analyzed and brought
together in the form of a narrative. This narrative serves to better explain the emotions and thoughts that the interviewees had about the idea of literacy.
The first interviewee is one of my classmates who was asked a series of questions about literacy. My classmates stated that "When I was child I use to
wrote any words I saw in the newspaper, but just copy the words without knows the meaning. After that my mother saw my, she asks me. Do you know
the meaning of this words? I said not, in this day, my mother start to taught me how to read and write." When asked about which areas were most
interesting my classmate stated that they read romantic books, dramas, fantasy books, and history.
But it was not always easy for them. My classmate stated

The Importance of Literacy Essay
Is it important to be a literate person in today's society? The ability to function well depends on whether or not a person is literate and can
comprehend what is going on around them. If a person doesn't have the basic ability to read, they will feel the stress and dependency on others
because of their illiteracy. Illiteracy is a big problem because without the knowledge of reading, illiterate people can't perform daily tasks and
responsibilities in daily life. When all it would take is a mere two minutes out of your day, don't you think illiteracy can be helped or even
extinguished? In today's society illiterate people are looked at as "half–citizens" (Kozol 190). They are dependent on literate people to function daily.

The problem is not only that illiterate people are dependent on others, it's also that the literate, well–functioning people of society aren't always willing
to put forth help. Help may only take a few minutes out of someone's day, and to them be no big deal. For an illiterate person, those few minutes
may be the defining of their lives. As an example, I will talk briefly about my cousin, born into a broken home and forced to deal with illiteracy on
a daily basis. Steven was brought up in a bad neighborhood and raised by the streets. His family simply didn't care about anything other than how
they would afford their next bottle of booze or pack of cigarettes. Growing up, he was never told he had to go to school; therefore, he only went on
occasion. His lack of schooling in his younger years took its toll on him by the time he hit high school. Living in a bad neighborhood and brought up by
gangs, Steven's life was in a bad condition.
After dropping out of high school in his sophomore year, Steven attempted to get a job, but without a diploma or a license this was just close to
impossible for him. In desperate need of a job, to support his growing family, Steven took to the streets and made money the only way he knew how.
After several months, he was living the good life, until the day came that changed his life forever. He ended up selling drugs to an undercover police
officer and was sent to jail for three years.

James Paul Gee's What Is Literacy
If Gee's "What is Literacy" were a boat, we'd all be bailing water.
In recent weeks all of us have been introduced to the essay "What is Literacy" written by Linguist James Paul Gee in 1987. Within this document
we learn Gee is going to employ his learned skills to provide a 'useful' definition for the word literacy. Prior to providing us this insight, however,
Gee must educate the reader on various definitions, idea and numerous theories in an effort to provide support for his conclusions and ultimately woo
the reader into believing the postulations he makes. It is my belief that while Gee is eventually able to turn the reader to his way of thinking, he is not
able to as eloquently as he would like. In fact, upon closer examination, I...show more content...
In fact, I am so perplexed by this ultimately simple definition that I read and re–read the definition again and again trying to make sense of the words
on the page and wondering if this has all been an effort in futility. Even Gee himself seems dissatisfied with the definition he has provided as he
immediately adds the adjectives "dominant" and "powerful" as a means to better express the meaning of the definition he has provided in the very next
sentences. While I acknowledge that for purpose of this essay Gee's definition may offer up a viable definition to support his arguments, it is by no
means a 'useful' or working definition of the word anywhere

Literacy Definition Essay
The word literacy is not easily defined. Although most commonly explained as the ability to read and write it takes on many dimensions. Just to say
that it is the ability to read has so many paths according to Szwed. The passage brings to point that people have different ways of reading depending
on the circumstance that they find themselves in at the present time. For example as used in the passage " Or a student who shows little aptitude for
reading may read Jaws in study hall" this shows how the circumstance can affect both the eagerness to read and the ability to read. Maybe a student is
not confident enough to read aloud but can read novels alone and comprehend them fully, or maybe just that the child has no interest in the article or

mean one thing in a group could mean something totally opposite to another and vice versa. The Use of literacy varies by people in a group and as

Literacy is a basic human need and human right to knowledge. It has meaning only when it leads to participation in cultural and social activities. It is
empowerment which means ability to make decisions and control affairs of ones own life, economically, socially and politically, it is the first step in a
life–long earning process of man and women. Life without literacy is life without hope, security and freedom. It is the foundation of all skills and
pre–requisite for economic development. Moreover, according to Stromquist (1995) in modern societies literacy skills are fundamental to informed
decision–making, personal empowerment, active and passive participation in local and global social community. Literacy is useful at the individual
level in inculcating humanistic etiquettes and manners. The human benefits from literature are related to factors such as the improved self–esteem,
empowerment, creativity and critical reflection that participation in adult literacy programmes and the practice of literacy may produce. Human
benefits are intrinsically valuable and may also be instrumental in realizing other benefits of literacy: improved health, increased political participation
and so on (UNESCO, 2006).
The most apparent aspects of the human characters influenced by the literacy teaching are the awareness, empowerment and self esteem. Bown (1990)

In today's world it is a requirement to be digitally literate in order to be able to function in a capacity that enables one to be more successful whether
it is at home, school, at our jobs or even looking for a job. Over the last few decades our environment has evolved into a digital environment. Being or

Most of the employers out there put all of their information online and to be able to apply for that job, you have to use a computer. That applies to
submitting your resume as well. The days of going from business to business, filling out applications and turning in resumes are long gone.
Nowadays when you go to a business to apply for a job, they tell you to go online to their website and apply there. Being digitally literate also relates
to the everyday things that we do such as reading the newspaper or a magazine or even writing a letter. Most newspapers and magazines can be found
online today and that can make things easier for us in our day to day lives. With that technology, we no longer have to carry around some giant
newspaper or even a magazine. We have the ability to put them on our computers of even an iPad and access them from anywhere that you have
internet access. Plus having this technology allows us to be able to search for certain articles without having to scan through an entire newspaper or
magazine. Along with having the ability to read newspapers and magazines digitally, those companies are also adding more pictures and links that just
add that much more to the stories. Even the newspaper companies such as the New York Times have evolved with this digital trend by adding more
color photos, charts, different fonts and even colored fonts in an attempt to make their publications more attractive. While there are

What Is Language And Literacy Essay
Language and literacy has to be the most powerful tool that a human can carry within themselves. It's the way a human expresses themselves. The
actions that they bring up with their language carries the culture of the person they are and where they come from. Now for me language and literacy
come in a form that was out of the ordinary for myself. I come from a household that the english language is very rare, to speak in front of my parents.
The language and literacy that is hold between the walls of my house and spoken in the most throughout the house is the beautiful language that my

The traditional literacy narrative often deals with one's journey into reading and writing, starting from a young age and progressing after years into
somewhat of a semi–professional or at least competent level. Or, it may involve coming to a new area and finding out that though you are fluent in
one language, you must start again and learn a whole new set of words and rules in an unfamiliar, foreign language that will define your future life.
These are at least the most traditional and common focuses people choose to tell their story about; however, literacy is not defined only as reading and

about fully. It's a wakeup call for some and as a result there are those that seem to almost become reclusive as though the only person that matters is
themselves. It's a selfish time, and it's this attitude that almost spreads from one person to another and due to this isolation, it manifests as a very
lonely time. There are hours on end where someone could just ponder their own lives, explore, discover, and shape everything they desire but there
are those that don't want this freedom. This period, when some are left by themselves with solely their thoughts, could be considered torture for those
who try and distract themselves from their own minds. This It was during this time of transition into terrifying responsibility and almost unwanted
freedom that this type of emotional literacy seemed like a truly valid area of expertise that deserved recognition. That moment of realization came
when I found out how it affected my best friend. My best friend, as you could imagine, was, and still is, incredibly close to me, and when I found out
she was struggling, I was struggling right along with her.

Scientific literacy
Introduction and audience
When talk about science, perhaps majority of us think it is less relative with real life. However, as society developed, science encompassed us
everywhere. This situation forces everyone to acquire the ability to learn and understand science. Some may think that, scientific literacy is what a
scientist should have and nothing about normal people, however it is just too narrow. Look around the surroundings of us, everything is conned with
science. Also, we encounter science in our normal life as well. Therefore, the ability to acquire and understand science is necessary and important,
which is called scientific literacy. Scientific literacy is the foundation of science and technology...show more content...

made the decision, it was a deceptive advertising and we wouldn't purchase it(problem solved). This is the one typical example process of using
scientific way to solve problems.
So far, we could tell scientific literacy is useful, but does it necessary for us? The next part is telling why it is necessary and the basic science
knowledge to acquire it.
Science knowledge is necessary
As the rapid development of science and technology, everyone in society is required to acquire higher scientific literate skill. What if one doesn't
acquire scientific literacy, not only he/she could not engage in science study or research, but would encounter difficulties in normal life. For
example, when we want to look for a book in the library, it would be so simply if we check it online, copy the index of the book and then go find it
directly. However, people who don't have the ability to acquire computer skill would have difficult. Therefore, scientific literacy is necessary in
contemporary life.
There is no doubt that science knowledge is the significant part of scientific literacy. Therefore, learning science is the first step. What is science? Just
taking a look at our surroundings, it not hard to find that science is everywhere. Simply example like how the lamp is lighted, which

relevant, ongoing, collaborative, and applied" if they are to be successful in preparing those students for success in their academic and professional
careers (Zabel ,2007).
For students to be adequately informed about the value of the university library and resources such as the Internet in information retrieval there must
be a careful collaboration between teaching staff and library staff (Kenney, 2007). The focus in this task, of course, is preparing students not just for
the immediate research project at hand but rather to prepare them to be life long learners, to prepare them to be successful and productive once they
leave the academic environment and take up their chosen careers (Lauer & Yodanis, 2012).
A search for information can take a variety of routes. It might entail a visit to the university library or to some other organization that maintains
information on a particular subject. Academic libraries are indeed a critical tool in information

Literacy By James Paul Gee
Summary In the essay 'What is literacy?', James Paul Gee, presents to us a very detailed examination, of concepts that are rather deemed to be similar
by most. He explores the definition and meaning of "literacy" by taking into account other related ideas such as "learning", "discourse" and
"acquisition". He very lucidly delves upon defining discourse, showing how it is related to defining literacy. He segregates discourse into Primary
Discourse and Secondary discourse– the former being what we imbibe in our early stages of life, growing up in our family and the neighborhood,
while the latter which we inculcate through our experiences in the society as we grow up. He also distinguishes between "acquiring" and "learning".

He defines acquisition as "a process of acquiring something subconsciously by exposure to models and a process of trial and error, without a process
of formal teaching" while learning as "a process that involves conscious knowledge gained through teaching, though not necessarily from someone
officially designated a teacher". The point that he makes here is that our education system in inefficient because most of the knowledge that one
imbibes in one's lifetime is through learning that is conditioned to him systematically in a classroom and hence, the students from non–dominant
discourse are at a disadvantage because their basic tool is of learning and so they cannot enter the dominant discourse and find their way to power,
success and money. The reason behind this is that it is not practically possible to let these children have access to dominant discourses due to the lack
of financial resources that their parents possess. Also, the process of acquisition takes place in a natural setting, the chances of these children to have

Literacy Is The Definition Of Literacy
To myself, the definition of literacy is having the ability and means to read and/or write. Although this seems as though it is a stereotypical and
common definition, I have found during the course of my life that this definition holds to be true to my personal being. When I was younger, I used to
think literacy was simply the literacy book that we read out of during English class. The more that I grew, the more I realized that literacy was having
the ability to read the book– not the book itself. While in junior high, my English course was referred to as a literacy course. During this course, we
learned on what basis literacy forms. The teacher explained that literacy is not the words on the page; literacy is having the means of reading the words,
and having the ability to comprehend what exactly it is that we were reading. Though this seems similar to cultural literacy, it is actually quite
different. Cultural literacy is having the ability to comprehend and participate fluently in a particular culture, whereas literacy is just having the ability
and means to read and/or write in general. I do not personally feel as though there was one single event that gave me a well–rounded definition of
literacy or cultural literacy. Rather, it has been throughout the course of my education that brought me to my definition of what literacy is and how
one acquires the abilities involved in it. Some say that there is a point in their lives in which they become "conscious" of literacy,

Language And Literacy

  • 1. Language and Literacy EDKL102– Assessment Task 1 Essay– What is Language? What is Literacy? How are they different? Teachers must have a sound knowledge and appreciation for language and literacy to be able to make the two concepts a valuable part of a student's curriculum. This essay will explore the importance of language and literature in a students learning and how they assist in enhancing their development. Most importantly the similarities and differences will be distinguished so that the relationship between the two can be understood. Defining both language and literacy as different entities, but also closely linked concepts, allows readers to bridge together their affiliation when taught to children in a classroom environment. We can see literacy...show more content... Vygotsky believed that by the time a child enters school, they use language not only for communicative purposes, but also for thinking and planning (Daniels at el, 2007 pg.138). Literacy is control of secondary use of language. It can be seen as being able to apply language to "use", "function" and "control". We all use language everyday; however literacy is the act of applying our knowledge of language. We use language to produce a range of modes for different purposes and audiences. Literacy is used to develop language and use it, for practical and purposeful situations and work. There is little use for possessing the knowledge of language if we cannot use and apply it in our everyday lives to gain knowledge and understanding (Kervin 2010). As educators, we must be aware that our knowledge of literacy and how we convey it to our children is an essential and ongoing process that is constantly adapting. The importance of applying the student's knowledge of language to literacy is crucial as it plays a crucial part in a child's education, development and life skills. If a child cannot apply their language skills to literacy they will find it Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. The Importance Of Literacy In Daily Life Literacy has changed the way that people live since the beginning of time. From cavemen communicating with drawings and hand signals to the earliest form of Latin. At that time reading was a skill that very few had. It was believed to be that only the wealthy and the noble class were taught this skill. Peasants did not need it in their everyday life. Reading was considered a privilege and was also used to suppress the lower class. Knowledge is power. For me, this knowledge has molded the way that I live and communicate. Everyday our lives are affected by literacy and most people do not even notice it. When I read a menu at a restaurant or a book from a library I do not realize how unbelievable it is to read such things. I do not notice how amazing and extraordinary it is to be able to have this privilege. Literature is everywhere and it not only changes our lives for the better but it also changes who you are and how you choose to see things. When I was younger and I learned how to read, I did not realize that I was learning something that would change my life. I will never be able to recall ever learning this skill nor will I ever be able to pinpoint when it actually began to help me in my everyday life. What I do know is that without literacy living life would not be easy. When I go shopping and purchase a new shirt I do not think twice about what the shirt says. When I go out with my friends I do not hesitate before I type out a text to my mother telling her where I am Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Language and Literacy Essay Literacy is the ability to read and write. These are both fundamental skills that every child should master. It leads to success in K–12 school, post–secondary school, the ability to compete in the job market, and participation in democratic process (Wei, Blackorby, & Schiller, 2011). Learning how to read and write however is a very complex process that requires an understanding of both oral and written language. To beginreading children need a strong back ground in the language he or she is trying to read. Knowledge of basic grammar rules and a big vocabulary help children make meaning of what they are reading. Without this knowledge words can be seemingly random, and the reader has a harder time predicting what an unfamiliar word...show more content... If a child reads a sentence like 'she can over to my house last night', knowledge of grammar should make him or her stop and reread knowing that the sentence didn't make sense and that 'can' was really the word 'came'. Without this knowledge however the sentence become illogical and might through off the comprehension of the entire story. When a child has language delays however this can impact their literacy in big ways. Children who have been identified with language delays have lower scores in reading and spelling when compared to non–delayed peers in first grade (Bishop & Adams, 1990). Research also indicates that early literacy difficulties will most likely persist over time (McGinty & Justice, 2009). These two facts should be great areas of concern for both parents and teachers during the early childhood years when the foundation for literacy skills is being laid down. If a child is showing signs of significant language delays the earlier is it detected and the child gets appropriate help and support the better. It would be very difficult for children to read or write beyond their overall language skills. Children often write what they hear and know. If they have a very small vocabulary, with improper grammar structure, that is often how they will write. 'I hear dog', might seem like a perfectly logical sentence to a child with low literacy skills. Increasing that child's knowledge base however can turn that sentence Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Media Literacy in the Classroom Essay Media Literacy in the Classroom Works Cited Missing Media literacy is defined as "the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and communicate messages in a variety of forms" (Know TV). In more practical terms, media literacy means questioning the media and interpreting its many messages accordingly. Students are exposed to mass quantities of media on a daily basis. They watch television and movies, read books, newspapers, and magazines, listen to music, and in more recent years explore the Internet. This extreme exposure to media outlets leads to the need for education about the media. Media literacy is one way to help educate students about issues in which they are already actively engaged. Media literacy should be implemented into...show more content... Too often, people do not question or challenge the views media presents to us and simply accept the views at face value. Politicians rely on this during campaign elections. The popularity of negative advertisements depreciating opposition parties has grown tremendously over the years because they are often successful. The public embraces the negative media messages, then votes accordingly. Oftentimes, people do not even know they have been acted–upon by the media. Media literate people do not have quite as much trouble interpreting similar messages, for they are aware of the pervasive nature of the media. Media literacy courses allow people to hone their critical thinking skills and make informed decisions. These people are able to distinguish between fact and fiction, or at least recognize the differentiation between the two. They are able to examine the messages supplied to them by the media and in turn come to more knowledgeable decisions concerning politics and culture in society. They are able to see that the media simply represent the political arena from one viewpoint and that there may be more to the story then first it seems. The information learned through media literacy can also be applied to the second argument that focuses upon the influence media exercises on our values and behaviors. Media is probably the most powerful influence on teen attitudes and beliefs in American society. The abundance of media exposure contributes Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. What Does Literacy Mean To You Essay John Green once said, "Great books help you understand, and they help you feel understood." Literacy, at least to me. is the ability to understand and to be understood. Words have no limits they can travel across borders and oceans. They also hold a tremendous amount of power. Words can change the way we think, affect the way we feel, and inspire us to do more. Words can shape our entire world but more than that they can provide us a reflection of ourselves. Words bring comfort to us that there is a single person at some point in time somewhere out there in this vast world who knows what it is we go through, the struggles we face, and the things we find joy in. • 6. Importance Of Technology Literacy In today's world, we live in an era where technology is becoming more and more essential in every workplace and school. Technology literacy plays an importance in students learning because it allows them to work independently, collaborate in groups, build effective technology skills, and learn how to communicate, interpret and share information, data and ideas (Maryland TeacherTechnology Standards, n.d). Since it is important for all students to be technologically literate, the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), has developed technology literacy standards that identify with what students should be able to master before graduating middle school. Primarily these standards emphasize the importance of students learning how technology is connected to them and their communities. As well as how they can learn and collaborate with others using technology, how they can express their ideas and share their thoughts and creativity, how to use technology for research and how to use technology for problem–solving and making informed decisions (Maryland Teacher Technology Standards). To make sure that students are meeting each standard, it is crucial for educators to strategically plan lessons that address the standards and engage students with the appropriate content, technology tools, and projects that help build their technology literacy skills. For example; 1) Standard 1– Technology Systems: Develop foundations in the understanding and uses of technology Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Why Literacy Is Important Essay The Importance of Literacy Literacy has made my life extremely better in numerous ways. Learning how to perfect the skills to read and write was the best decision I have ever made. Now that I have mastered the use of literacy, reading and writing has taken me places that I never dreamed of being. Through literacy, I began understand the world more. I also have gained a greater understanding to reading and constructing writing assignments academically. Mastering the skills of reading and writing has created a structured path towards a better comprehension that I have used to advance in my current career. Finally, learning to be proficient in literacy has granted me the opportunity to adventure into new things, new information, and new methods to solve a problem and achieve goals. Gaining a Better Understanding Through Literacy Although I enjoyed attending college, reading and writing seemed to be a tedious chore to me. I loathed the thought of reading extensive articles and constructing writing assignments for class because I never understood what the instructors expected from me. However, I thoroughly enjoyed reading for leisure and writing short stories, writing lyrics to songs, and creating speeches for personal use. In college, I never really invested the time or effort to perfect reading...show more content... According to Information Literacy and Students' Future Careers, Tami Strang states, "As employers consider the candidates in their hiring pools, they certainly look for people who have key job–related skills, as well as proficiency with technologies associated with the role. But beyond that, they also seek individuals who can communicate clearly and think critically and creatively. For this reason, the information literacy skills that students learn in college play a central role in their ability to enter their chosen career and succeed in their Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. My Personal Experience With Literacy Literacy is defined as being literate, that is, being able to read and write in a language. My personal experience with literacy began at an early age, at the age of 4 when I began to sit and read words and letters in the back of my mother's car. Soon enough, she would bring me a magazine called "Majed" which, in the 90's, was a popular magazine. With this, I began even more interested in reading and writing and reviewed every word in the magazine associated with each of the short pictured stories. It was the first memory I deeply recall of literacy and it was what laid the foundation for my personal love of reading and writing. The methodology used for this is an interview. There are three interviews which are analyzed and brought together in the form of a narrative. This narrative serves to better explain the emotions and thoughts that the interviewees had about the idea of literacy. The first interviewee is one of my classmates who was asked a series of questions about literacy. My classmates stated that "When I was child I use to wrote any words I saw in the newspaper, but just copy the words without knows the meaning. After that my mother saw my, she asks me. Do you know the meaning of this words? I said not, in this day, my mother start to taught me how to read and write." When asked about which areas were most interesting my classmate stated that they read romantic books, dramas, fantasy books, and history. But it was not always easy for them. • 9. The Importance of Literacy Essay Is it important to be a literate person in today's society? The ability to function well depends on whether or not a person is literate and can comprehend what is going on around them. If a person doesn't have the basic ability to read, they will feel the stress and dependency on others because of their illiteracy. Illiteracy is a big problem because without the knowledge of reading, illiterate people can't perform daily tasks and responsibilities in daily life. When all it would take is a mere two minutes out of your day, don't you think illiteracy can be helped or even extinguished? In today's society illiterate people are looked at as "half–citizens" (Kozol 190). They are dependent on literate people to function daily. Think...show more content... The problem is not only that illiterate people are dependent on others, it's also that the literate, well–functioning people of society aren't always willing to put forth help. Help may only take a few minutes out of someone's day, and to them be no big deal. For an illiterate person, those few minutes may be the defining of their lives. As an example, I will talk briefly about my cousin, born into a broken home and forced to deal with illiteracy on a daily basis. Steven was brought up in a bad neighborhood and raised by the streets. His family simply didn't care about anything other than how they would afford their next bottle of booze or pack of cigarettes. Growing up, he was never told he had to go to school; therefore, he only went on occasion. His lack of schooling in his younger years took its toll on him by the time he hit high school. Living in a bad neighborhood and brought up by gangs, Steven's life was in a bad condition. After dropping out of high school in his sophomore year, Steven attempted to get a job, but without a diploma or a license this was just close to impossible for him. In desperate need of a job, to support his growing family, Steven took to the streets and made money the only way he knew how. After several months, he was living the good life, until the day came that changed his life forever. He ended up selling drugs to an undercover police officer and was sent to jail for three years. • 10. James Paul Gee's What Is Literacy If Gee's "What is Literacy" were a boat, we'd all be bailing water. In recent weeks all of us have been introduced to the essay "What is Literacy" written by Linguist James Paul Gee in 1987. Within this document we learn Gee is going to employ his learned skills to provide a 'useful' definition for the word literacy. Prior to providing us this insight, however, Gee must educate the reader on various definitions, idea and numerous theories in an effort to provide support for his conclusions and ultimately woo the reader into believing the postulations he makes. It is my belief that while Gee is eventually able to turn the reader to his way of thinking, he is not able to as eloquently as he would like. In fact, upon closer examination, I...show more content... In fact, I am so perplexed by this ultimately simple definition that I read and re–read the definition again and again trying to make sense of the words on the page and wondering if this has all been an effort in futility. Even Gee himself seems dissatisfied with the definition he has provided as he immediately adds the adjectives "dominant" and "powerful" as a means to better express the meaning of the definition he has provided in the very next sentences. While I acknowledge that for purpose of this essay Gee's definition may offer up a viable definition to support his arguments, it is by no means a 'useful' or working definition of the word anywhere Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Literacy Definition Essay The word literacy is not easily defined. Although most commonly explained as the ability to read and write it takes on many dimensions. Just to say that it is the ability to read has so many paths according to Szwed. The passage brings to point that people have different ways of reading depending on the circumstance that they find themselves in at the present time. For example as used in the passage " Or a student who shows little aptitude for reading may read Jaws in study hall" this shows how the circumstance can affect both the eagerness to read and the ability to read. Maybe a student is not confident enough to read aloud but can read novels alone and comprehend them fully, or maybe just that the child has no interest in the article or ...show more content... Everything you do in a day from reading a newspaper article to knowing the break lights on the car in front of you means stop are all things you have learned and now identify to mean something. Ways that the same thing is used but in different settings is alsoliteracy. A word that is commonly used to mean one thing in a group could mean something totally opposite to another and vice versa. The Use of literacy varies by people in a group and as pointed out in the reading "a specific method for directly observing literacy in operation within a limited setting are field observations". By watching a group of people in a place that they either feel comfortable or with people that are similar to them helps give an outsider a look at how that person not only uses literacy but how he looks and tackles different situations. Going back to the boy spoken about above. The boy although could not read in front of the class but if you were to go to his study hall and observe him then it would show him at his best because he feels like no one is going to judge Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. "Literacy Training Service" is a program designed to train students to become teacher literacy and numeracy skills to school children, out of school youth, and other segments of society in need of their need. Literacy is crucial to the success of individuals in both their career aspirations and their quality of life. It is more than a basic reading ability, but rather an indication of "how adults use written information to function in society." Strong literacy skills are closely linked to the probability of having a good job, decent earnings, and access to training opportunities. Literacy is useful at the individual level in inculcating humanistic etiquettes and manners. The human benefits from literature are related to factors such as the improved self–esteem, empowerment, creativity and critical reflection that participation in adult literacy programmes and the practice of literacy may produce. Human benefits are intrinsically valuable and may also be instrumental in realizing other benefits of literacy: improved health, increased political participation and so on (UNESCO, 2006). The most apparent aspects of the human characters influenced by the literacy teaching are the awareness, empowerment and self esteem. • 15. The traditional literacy narrative often deals with one's journey into reading and writing, starting from a young age and progressing after years into somewhat of a semi–professional or at least competent level. Or, it may involve coming to a new area and finding out that though you are fluent in one language, you must start again and learn a whole new set of words and rules in an unfamiliar, foreign language that will define your future life. These are at least the most traditional and common focuses people choose to tell their story about; however, literacy is not defined only as reading and writing. It's a wakeup call for some and as a result there are those that seem to almost become reclusive as though the only person that matters is themselves. It's a selfish time, and it's this attitude that almost spreads from one person to another and due to this isolation, it manifests as a very lonely time. There are hours on end where someone could just ponder their own lives, explore, discover, and shape everything they desire but there are those that don't want this freedom. This period, when some are left by themselves with solely their thoughts, could be considered torture for those who try and distract themselves from their own minds. This It was during this time of transition into terrifying responsibility and almost unwanted freedom that this type of emotional literacy seemed like a truly valid area of expertise that deserved recognition. That moment of realization came when I found out how it affected my best friend. My best friend, as you could imagine, was, and still is, incredibly close to me, and when I found out she was struggling, I was struggling right along with her. Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Last but not least, they are used by informed citizens in participating fully in a democratic society through voting (Kenney, 2007). They know where to look for the answer to both the common everyday information needs and for the answer to the more perplexing, less–easily–addressed, problems of life. They are familiar not just with where to look but also with the tools and processes required to find those answers. Zabel (2007) points out that efforts to train students to be adept at attaining information through a variety of mechanisms must be "integrated, relevant, ongoing, collaborative, and applied" if they are to be successful in preparing those students for success in their academic and professional careers (Zabel ,2007). For students to be adequately informed about the value of the university library and resources such as the Internet in information retrieval there must be a careful collaboration between teaching staff and library staff (Kenney, 2007). The focus in this task, of course, is preparing students not just for the immediate research project at hand but rather to prepare them to be life long learners, to prepare them to be successful and productive once they leave the academic environment and take up their chosen careers (Lauer & Yodanis, 2012). A search for information can take a variety of routes. It might entail a visit to the university library or to some other organization that maintains information on a particular subject. • 18. Literacy By James Paul Gee Summary In the essay 'What is literacy?', James Paul Gee, presents to us a very detailed examination, of concepts that are rather deemed to be similar by most. He explores the definition and meaning of "literacy" by taking into account other related ideas such as "learning", "discourse" and "acquisition". He very lucidly delves upon defining discourse, showing how it is related to defining literacy. He segregates discourse into Primary Discourse and Secondary discourse– the former being what we imbibe in our early stages of life, growing up in our family and the neighborhood, while the latter which we inculcate through our experiences in the society as we grow up. He also distinguishes between "acquiring" and "learning". This distinction...show more content... He defines acquisition as "a process of acquiring something subconsciously by exposure to models and a process of trial and error, without a process of formal teaching" while learning as "a process that involves conscious knowledge gained through teaching, though not necessarily from someone officially designated a teacher". The point that he makes here is that our education system in inefficient because most of the knowledge that one imbibes in one's lifetime is through learning that is conditioned to him systematically in a classroom and hence, the students from non–dominant discourse are at a disadvantage because their basic tool is of learning and so they cannot enter the dominant discourse and find their way to power, success and money. The reason behind this is that it is not practically possible to let these children have access to dominant discourses due to the lack of financial resources that their parents possess. Also, the process of acquisition takes place in a natural setting, the chances of these children to have one is almost Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Literacy Is The Definition Of Literacy To myself, the definition of literacy is having the ability and means to read and/or write. Although this seems as though it is a stereotypical and common definition, I have found during the course of my life that this definition holds to be true to my personal being. When I was younger, I used to think literacy was simply the literacy book that we read out of during English class. The more that I grew, the more I realized that literacy was having the ability to read the book– not the book itself. While in junior high, my English course was referred to as a literacy course. During this course, we learned on what basis literacy forms. The teacher explained that literacy is not the words on the page; literacy is having the means of reading the words, and having the ability to comprehend what exactly it is that we were reading. Though this seems similar to cultural literacy, it is actually quite different. Cultural literacy is having the ability to comprehend and participate fluently in a particular culture, whereas literacy is just having the ability and means to read and/or write in general. I do not personally feel as though there was one single event that gave me a well–rounded definition of literacy or cultural literacy. Rather, it has been throughout the course of my education that brought me to my definition of what literacy is and how one acquires the abilities involved in it. Some say that there is a point in their lives in which they become "conscious" of literacy, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
