The Greatest
Miracle
When he had received
the drink, Jesus said, “It
is finished.” With that,
he bowed his head and
gave up his spirit.
John 19:30
The word “miracles” often
brings to mind events that
amaze, astonish, and defy
the laws of nature. And
this does describe many
of the miracles Jesus
performed on earth.
But a less flashy
miracle is that of fulfilled
prophecies. While many
miraculous events
surrounded the death of
Christ on the cross, one
great miracle was
that death itself died
1. The Death
of
Jesus Christ
a. The miracle of
fulfilling the Plan of
God
About three in the
afternoon Jesus cried out
in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,
lema sabachthani?”
(which means “My God,
my God, why have you
forsaken me?”)
MATTHEW 27:46
My God, my God, why
have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from
saving me, so far from
my cries of anguish?
Psalms 22:1
Psalm 22, which was written
long before the crucifixion,
contains specific details that
only came to pass during the
crucifixion and death of Jesus:
the picture of being surrounded
by Gentiles; His hands and feet
being pierced; and His garments
being divided by casting lots
When Jesus cried, “Eli, Eli, lema
sabachthani?” He was not
announcing that the Father’s
presence had left Him. Instead,
Jesus was pointing back to the
prophecy. This was God’s plan all
along; it was not an accident.
The Father had never left Jesus’
side
The gospel he promised
beforehand through his
prophets in the Holy
Scriptures regarding his
Son, who as to his
earthly life was a
descendant of David,
and who through the
Spirit of holiness was
appointed the Son of
God in power by his
resurrection from the
dead: Jesus Christ our
Lord. (Rom. 1:2-4)
b. The Miracle of
opening the way to
God’s presence.
At that moment the
curtain of the temple
was torn in two from
top to bottom. The
earth shook, the rocks
split (MATTHEW 27:51)
At the moment that Jesus
died, the curtain of the
temple was torn in half. In
Jesus’ time, this curtain
divided the Holy Place
and the Most Holy Place
where only the high
priest could enter once a
year at the risk of his
own death, because
God’s glory rested in the
Most Holy Place
When the curtain
was torn, it symbolized the
opening of the way into
God’s presence for anyone,
not just the high priest.
Because of Jesus’ death,
we can approach God daily
in our personal lives.
Hebrews 10:19–22
19 Therefore, brothers and
sisters, since we have
confidence to enter the Most
Holy Place by the blood of
Jesus, 20 by a new and living
way opened for us through
the curtain, that is, his body
21 and since we have a great
priest over the house of God,
22 let us draw near to God with a
sincere heart and with the full
assurance that faith brings,
having our hearts sprinkled to
cleanse us from a guilty
conscience and having our
bodies washed with pure water.
Result:
Jesus opened the
door for
Resurrection.
and the tombs broke open. The
bodies of many holy people who
had died were raised to life.
They came out of the tombs after
Jesus’ resurrection and[a] went
into the holy city and appeared
to many people.
Matthew 27:52-53
The death of Jesus on the
cross opened the way for
all of us to also rise again.
At His death, the tombs of
dead saints were
opened.
When Jesus died, not only
was it a fulfillment of the
entire Old Testament and
opened the way to God’s
presence; He showed us
that our final end would not
be death, but
glory.
Ultimately, the miraculous
events that took place at
Jesus’ death pointed to the
true miracle that even
bystanders
couldn’t deny: that Jesus is
the Son of God
When the centurion and those
with him who were guarding
Jesus saw the earthquake
and all that had happened,
they were terrified, and
exclaimed, “Surely he was the
Son of God!” Matthew 27:54
2. The
Resurrection of
Jesus Christ
On the third day of His
death and burial, Jesus
rose to life in the
event known as the
resurrection.
But ultimately, the miracle
of the resurrection
revealed that Jesus is
more powerful than death.
Jesus Himself prophesied
His own death and
resurrection
No one takes it from me, but I
lay it down of my own accord.
I have authority to lay it down
and authority to take it up
again. This command I
received from my Father.”
John 10:18
His life, death, and
resurrection
also caused others to
resurrect from the dead.
Indeed, He is the
resurrection and the life
Jesus said to her, “I am the
resurrection and the life.
The one who believes in
me will live, even though
they die;
John 11:25
a. The miracle of
Jesus’ resurrection
reveals that He is
worthy of worship
Suddenly Jesus met
them. “Greetings,” he
said. They came to him,
clasped his feet and
worshiped him.
MATTHEW 28:9
When Jesus rose from the
dead, He proved that He is the
Son of God, even to those who
previously did not believe. He
also proved that He was
divine, and thus worthy of
worship
b.The miracle of
Jesus’ resurrection
shows that He has
all power and
authority
Then Jesus came to
them and said, “All
authority in heaven and
on earth has been given
to me.
MATTHEW 28:18
Jesus’ resurrection proved
that all of the kingdoms of
the world have been placed
under His power and
authority. Satan was called
the prince of the power of
the air and held all the
kingdoms of the earth
in which you used to live
when you followed the
ways of this world and of
the ruler of the kingdom of
the air, the spirit who is
now at work in those who
are disobedient. Eph. 2:2
Again, the devil took
him to a very high
mountain and showed
him all the kingdoms of
the world and their
splendor. Matthew 4:8
But when Jesus rose
again, He took the
kingdom back from
Satan to be under His
rule.
The seventh angel sounded
his trumpet, and there were
loud voices in heaven, which
said: “The kingdom of the
world has become the
kingdom of our Lord and of
his Messiah, and he will reign
for ever and ever.”
Revelation 11:15
Result:
Jesus’ resurrection
compels us to go
and make disciples
Therefore go and make
disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the
name of the Father and
of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit,
and teaching them to
obey everything I have
commanded you. And
surely I am with you
always, to the very end
of the age.”
Matthew 28:19-20
Ultimately, the miracle of
the resurrection of Jesus
highlights that Jesus was
who He said He was—the
Son of God, greater than
death, and the only way
that we can be saved and
experience eternal life
It’s this very fact that now
compels us to go and make
disciples, so that others
will come to know the
Jesus that we know and
experience the eternal life
that He has made available
to them
What is your
response knowing
that Jesus always
invites us to take
part with Him in His
work?
The Greatest Miracle in
our life is when we
become a part of God’s
Family because of one
Man on the Cross
Said this to us…
