The document outlines 10 activities that can be completed in 10 minutes each to engage English language learners. The activities include a grammar auction where learners bid on correct and incorrect sentences, organizing sentences, jazz chants, guessing what's in someone's head or pocket, small talk parties, sentence relays, hangman, and forming shapes in 10 seconds to represent words. The purpose is to provide fun, interactive exercises to keep learners interested and improve their grammar and vocabulary.
2. • Don’t use the “grammar auction” activity from
the back of the Teacher’s Book – set a task and
start scribbling!
• 10 sentences is a good amount, with some
correct ones in there.
• Include two or three mistakes in some
sentences – keep them on their toes.
• Learners buy the INCORRECT sentences, not
the correct ones, or they won’t stay interested
when you’re done selling.

3. #1 Grammar Auction – the rules

4. #1 Grammar Auction
• Put your learners in groups.
• Give them time to think about which ones they
want to buy.
• Set a maximum bid.
• GET SELLING!!
11. #6 What’s in my pocket?
• Only accept (correctly formed) y/n
questions
• Great for creating interest!
• e.g. a postcard from your parents to
introduce a writing activity
• A theatre ticket to introduce what
you did/are going to do
12. #7 Small talk party
• Can be adapted for all levels –
including beginner
• Brainstorm small talk topics on the
whiteboard
• Give out a personality adjective to
each member of the class
13. #7 Small talk party
• Put on some music and let the learners
mingle – they can’t say their adjective,
they ARE their adjective
• When all the students have spoken to
each other, make a big circle and let
everyone pool their ideas on what
everyone else’s adjective was and why.
• Always worth doing twice!
• (Follow up with a sneaky grammar
auction!)
14. #8 Sentence relays
• Two teams in lines facing the board,
board pen with the first student.
• Say a sentence/question twice.
• First student writes the first word, runs
back and give the pen to the second. They
write the second word, etc etc.
• They can help each other.
• Why is this a useful activity?
16. #10 10 second shapes
• Can be letters, numbers, abstract nouns if
you’re feeling lucky!
• Call it out and in groups the students have
10 seconds to get into a shape that
represents the word.
• Then they test each other, or you!
