Literary Elements In Literature
Throughout history, authors incorporate literary elements to enhance their writing. Literary elements are used to construct an author's writing to
portray one's unique style and to convey the message that they want to bring to their readers. Literary elements add to a piece of writing in many
ways. For example, an author may voice his or her perspective as expressed through the narrator in a story. The setting of a story helps the reader
visualize the place and time in which the story occurs. At times, an author may use the literary technique of personification which gives nonhuman
objects human abilities and characterizations. Authors such as Flannery O'Connor, James Joyce, and Katherine Mansfield use several literary
techniques to develop their stories and portray their message. These three authors use irony which contradicts what was inferred by a specific
character in the beginning of the story. At the start of the story the reader and the other characters in the story expect one thing to occur but as one
reaches the end of the story the situation is flipped to be exactly the opposite of what was expected.
In the story "A Good Man is Hard to Find", Flannery O'Connor uses the literary device of irony to help get across what he is trying to convey. In the
story the grandmother plans a whole vacation for the family and ends up sending everyone to be doomed for the worse. The vacation went all wrong.
The grandmother's intention was to plan a family vacation where everyone

Gothic Literature Elements Essay
Edgar Allen Poe was a popular author of gothic literature. Gothic Literature is a genre of writing that is dark or strange. There are eight elements
of gothic literature. There has to be at least one of the eight elements for a piece of writing to be considered gothic. In "The Masque of the Red
Death" three of the elements are a tyrannical male, a metonymy of gloom and horror, and supernatural elements. The first element used was a
tyrannical male. All throughout Prince Prospero's kingdom, his people are dying from a horrible plague known as "The Red Death". Around every
corner, people are dying or already dead, covered in the infamous scarlet red blood that is the most obvious sign of the red death, and all the prince
could do was sit in...show more content...
As it drew closer to midnight, a mysterious figure appeared in the crowd. No one had seen this guest before and they were all quite alarmed by his
sudden arrival. "Then, summoning the wild courage of despair, a throng of the revelers at opne threw themselves into the black apartment, and, seizing
the mummer, whose tall figure stood erect and motionless within the shadow of the ebony clock, gasped in unutterable horror at finding the grave
cerements and corpselike mask which they handled with so violent a rudeness, untenanted by any tangible form." pr. 11 As the guests attempted to
capture the stranger, they realize that the clothing and mask are being worn by no human or object, and the red death had slipped it's way into the
castle. There is no reasonable explaination for the mysterious figure that walked through the party and then just disappeared like an eerie mist, leaving
the reader to assume that it was supernatural. There are many elements of gothic literature in "The Masque of the Red Death". The three elements
mentioned before are a tyrannical male, a metonymy of gloom and horror and supernatural elements. The tyrannical male, Prince Prospero, deserted the
people of his kingdom when they needed him the most. The ebony clock that chimed every hour, on the hour, symbolized how much time the guests
had left. The mysterious, disappearing figure entered and exited the party like a phantom. "The Masque of the Red Death" is an

The Elements Of Poetry
Poetry is literary work in which the expression of feelings and ideas is given intensity by the use of distinctive style and rhythm, poems collectively
or as a genre of literature. It is also a quality of beauty and intensity of emotion regarded as characteristic of poems. Poetry (poem) is something that
follows a particular flow of rhythm and meter. Compare to prose, where there is no such restriction, and the content of the piece flows according to the
story, a poem may or may not have a story, but definitely has structured method of writing.
The definition of "Elements of Poetry" is a set of instrument use to create poems. The usages of these elements began many years ago. Archeologist

In ancient times, lyric poems were sung to the accompaniment of the lyric, a type of stringed instrument. Modem lyric poems are not usually sung.
However, they still have a musical quality that is achieved through rhythm and such other devices as alliteration and rhyme.
Elegy: A poem of mourning, usually over death of an individual. It may also be a lament over the passing of life and beauty or a meditation over
nature of death. An elegy is a type of lyrical poem, usually formal in language and structure and solemn or even melancholy in tone.
Acrostic: In acrostic poems, the first letter of each line of each line of the poem is aligned vertically to form a word. Generally, the word formed thus,
is the subject of the poem.
Ballad: Ballads are narrative poems that are supposed to be sung. The narrator usually starts a dramatic scene and relates the narrative with dialog and
action.
Canzone: The word canzone, which means a song, signifies any simple song like composition. It is an Italian song or ballad.

Elements of Literature
Literature is important just as important in today's society as it was in past societies. An entire culture exists within the written words that are placed
on paper by poets writers and novelist. Literature is used to inspire, waken, or transform one's ideas or thoughts and can take you on a imaginary
journey. Literary study involves the four processes of thinking, reading, writing, and discussing. Studying literature can increase one's knowledge,
actively and intellectually challenging the way someone looks at the world.
"Literature increases a readers awareness of cultural values, history, sociology, psychology, and almost every branch of human knowledge."(literary
devices, n.d.) Literary devices are used to promote the reader's imagination. Literature devices are used by the writer to set a tone or theme to their
stories. From the very beginning of time humans beings have been telling stories and literary devices been used throughout our history and play a
key role. Story telling has evolved and the use of literary elements and literary techniques have played a large role in how a writer develop their poems
or stories.
Literary elements are the "universal constituents of literature"(literary devices, n.d.) and be found in any written story. Plots, settings, and characters
are a necessity and needed if a story is to work. The plot are characters or a series of actions that relate

Hemingway, Wilde and Poe are just some of the widely accredited authors that come to mind when great literature is often discussed. From my
perspective, there are numerous various aspects that go into crafting a successful piece of literature which includes a Theme, Plot and the Tone of the
story (The Seven Key Elements of Literature, 2017). While every piece of literature varies I believe that the conflict in any literary work proves to be
the key aspect. Conflict creates enticing drama to keep the reader anxiously flipping through each page with bated breath impatiently awaiting the next
plot twist. There are five main types of conflict and I plan to highlight the importance of. They are as follows: Human versus Human, Human versus
Nature, Human versus Society, Human versus Supernatural and Human versus Self. Without conflict a reader would simply become disinterested with
the piece since there is no real context embedded in the pages.
Conflict is the disagreement or prolonged struggle that a protagonist is faced with it effects not only the plot but the way the characters are
broadcasted to the reader. As stated above it is my belief that it is the most influential part of a piece of literature. One of my biggest struggles when
reading a novel or a short story is becoming uninterested with a repetitive tone or lack of conflict between the character or surrounding factors such as
society or nature. The drive that the narrator instills within the context of the pages

What is Poetry?
After reading the chapter of "What is poetry", I have understood that language which usually used in poetry is as universal as language and almost as
ancient. The language of poetry is not the same as the language that we use in daily life, it is usually using a language which compact but full of
meaning and words that are used is containing a lot of sense. Expressive poetic language that have meaning every sound, every word is chosen and
each metaphor used must not serve to the interests of expression, able to clarify the picture and capable of causing a strong impression. Every element
of the language chosen or used must not bring the tone, taste, and experience...show more content...
Don't expect to find any information while you are reading the poetry, because most of the time, poetry are using the aesthetic of language to pour the
writer's feeling or experienced. Different with the general information which we expect, poetry has an information of its theme which depend on the
title. In poetry there are some information which written to give the meaning and information of the poetry itself which is called as essay poetry. The
content of the essay poetry should not be presented in a factual, but it still presents an element of poetic language, because. Essays poetry are also
included in this type of fiction. In my opinion, the criteria that are expected to appear in the poetry of this essay is a communicative language, in
which the beauty of the language is not only seen from a play on words, the use of rhyme, figure of speech, and other elements are widely used in
poetry in general, but also viewed from the side clarity of meaning, especially for the readers. Achievement of poetry essay is to be understood by the
general public. Expectations are caused by a number of great poetry that is only understood by the authors themselves, or at least by a fellow poet.
While people with a variety of other background much less understand

"Literary Elements of Wharton's 'Roman Fever'"
The short story, "Roman Fever" by Edith Wharton, reveals numerous popular literary elements. Some of the most prominent examples of literary
elements are irony, symbolism, and foreshadowing. All three elements create the feel and atmosphere of the short story. They add illustration, mystery,
and humor to the storyline.
The irony in "Roman Fever" begins when the two daughters refer to their mothers as "young things". This is verbal irony because their two mothers
were described as aged and...show more content...
This shows that she is different from your average middle–aged woman, and that she and Grace do not have many things in common about their
personality (Petry 1).When Alida Slade and Grace Ansley are looking at their daughters having fun in the moonlight, and Grace says "And perhaps we
didn't know much more about each other", it shows that some drama is about to occur, and that she knew she had things that Alida did not know about
her, and also that perhaps Alida felt the same way (Selina 1).
"Roman Fever" demonstrates countless excellent cases of irony, symbolism, and foreshadowing. Different kinds of irony make "Roman Fever"
entertaining during dialogue. Symbolism gives the story deeper meaning in small actions, for instance knitting, and setting details. Foreshadowing in
the story baffles and intrigues. In conclusion, these are the three vital literary elements in Edith Wharton's "Roman Fever". They capture the reader
from the playful beginning to the jaw dropping end.

while flaterer is showed by call the main character darling. The second part of elements of fiction that I will explain is about the plot (structure of a

The Five Elements Of Literature Of The Iliad
Ancient Greece, 756 BC, war is raging between the Greeks and the Trojans; this is the Iliad, by Homer, an epic tale of the battle of Troy. In this epic,
Helen of Troy is kidnapped, starting a war between the Greeks and Romans. Achilles leads the battle by sea; after the war rages on sea, Achilles
returns to fight Hector, who has stolen Helen, leading to Hector's death. To create the Iliad, Homer used the Five Elements of Literature: plot, character,
conflict, and theme.
The Iliad is composed of twenty–four books all piled together; therefore, it is a very long epic. In the beginning, Agamemnon is in need of Achilles
without realizing it; he is sent a "Lying Dream" from Zeus instructing him to battle Troy all at once. This prophetic dream, according to the author, took
"nine years before that they would take Troy." This ten–year struggle was caused by the so called most beautiful women, Helen – who was kidnapped
and taken hostage; she was the so–called 'prize' to whomever wins. The war is raging between the Trojan Army and the Greeks; Agamemnon weeps in
despair considering surrender of the Trojans. At a last resort, the story states that, "An embassy of three men–Phoenix, Ajax, Odysseus–takes the news
to Achilles"; thus, bringing Achilles into battle. As the war is coming to a close in the last few books, Achilles suffers a loss of friendship due to
Hector. Patroclus is killed sending Achilles into a horrible grief. The epic concludes by Achilles killing Hector in revenge:

Literary Elements In The Iliad
The Iliad: Analysis For thousands of years, writers and authors have used the five literary elements of a story to write their own creations. Homer,
author of the Iliad, while living in the BC era was able to capture, illustrate, and use all five elements: plot, character, conflict, theme, and setting. There
are three main plots present in the synopsis, or summary, of the Iliad; the first is when Paris took Helen away from her husband Menelaus. "...Trojan
prince Paris (Alexandrus)–– whose abduction of Helen caused the war–– challenges an Archaean champion." The quote from the story highlights the
severity of the situation and it later caused problems for both sides. "...spears Patroclus from behind; Hector delivers the death blow." Later, when
Patroclus pretends to be Achilles to appear fearsome in the face of the Greeks, he is killed by Hector which throws Achilles into a bloody rage. "The
sight and sound of the mighty hero throw the Trojans into a costly panic...Hector loses his nerve and runs..." The last, and most important part of the
plot is when Achilles murders Hector as an act of revenge in the name of his fallen comrade. Out of all of the characters in the Iliad, Achilles,Odysseus,
and Agamemnon are the most important for the roles that they play though the story. As written in the Synopsis,"Odysseus rallies the leaders and
bullies the common soldier." This outlines the early leadership role that Odysseus had from the beginning. "...the mighty hero [threw] the

Literary Elements In A & P
Life is always about making important decisions that could change your life completely. Like the story A&P, Sammy made a huge decision to quit
his job due to his boss being rude to three young girls wearing bathing suits. John Updike used several literary elements to make the story stand out
and for people to relate to Sammy. The most important elements that is used in this story is setting, point of view, and characters. Firstly, setting
plays a crucial part of the story because of where and when the story takes place. This story takes place around the 1950's in the United States near
Boston. In the story, it read "It's not as if we're on the Cape; we're north of Boston and there's people in this town haven't seen the ocean for twenty
years." (Updike) This quote demonstrates of why the locals in the town where so upset to see the three young girls wearing only their bathing suits in
the supermarket. This also takes place in a much older generation that is not okay with people walking around with revealing clothing. That is why
Sammy's boss, Lengel was so upset with the...show more content...
A&P is in first person perspective and is portrayed by Sammy the nineteen–year–old cashier. You can easily tell that the point of view is based on a
nineteen–year–old due to the first sentence. It reads "In walks these three girls in nothing but bathing suits. I'm in the third check–out slot, with my
back to the door, so I don't see them until they're over by the bread." (Updike) The way that Sammy is talking is childish and someone that is in their
thirties or older would not talk like that. John Updike made sure to make Sammy of a mind of a nineteen–year–old. Another proof of that is "I look
around for my girls, but they're gone, of course. There wasn't anybody but some young married screaming with her children about some candy they
didn't get by the door of a powder–blue Falcon station wagon."

Over the past year our class has learned many things that have helped make us better readers and writers. We have learned how to use common
literary elements to help us read into a story beyond the text. From the first independent book we read to short stories we read together in class, we
have all improved drastically as writers. The first thing we did in starting our English ten honors course was to pick an independent book to read over
the summer. I picked The Da Vinci Code written by Dan Brown. Our assignment for this was to name three literary elements the author used well. I
said that the best used literary elements used in this novel are point of view, symbolism, and foreshadowing. The reasoning behind each of these was

The improvement of writing speeches between these four months was drastic.
We also developed abetter understanding of the literary element authors use in their writing. In January we wrote a paragraph explaining how and
why authors use diction in their writing. Before doing this we went through an exercise of trying to put certain words into a poem to convey the
mood. After this we read Snow Falling on Cedars and wrote an essay Explaining why and how Ishmael is the protagonist of the story. This was
proven by showing how the conflict, climax, and the resolution were centered around him. We planned this out using a plot diagram to explain the
climax, conflict, and resolution of the story. The main problems within this essay were possessives, along with the use of commas for appositives.
The last piece of writing we did this year was on ten short stories we read in class. We did a plot diagram for each of these short stories to have a
better understanding of all the parts of theme. This was similar to what we did with Snow Falling on Cedars. There were few mistakes in this piece
besides a few proofreading errors. Over the course of English ten honors, you can see my writing and reading skills grow and improve.Over the past
year our class has learned many things that have helped make us better readers and writers. We have learned how to use common literary elements to

Essay on Romanticism In Literature
Romanticism In Literature
Romanticism in literature, began around 1750 and lasted until 1870. Different from the classical ways of Neoclassical
Age(1660–1798), it relied on imagination, idealization of nature and freedom of thought and expression.
Two men who influenced the era with their writings were
William Wordsworth and SamuelTaylor Coleridge, both English poets of the time. Their edition of "Lyrical Ballads';, stressed the importance of feeling
and imagination. Thus in romantic
Literature the code was imagination over reason, emotion over logic, and finally intuition over science. All of these new ways discouraged and didn't
tolerate the more classic way of literature. Other significant writers of the...show more content...
References to this can be found in
"Ode to Evening'; by William Collins, and "Elegy Written in a
Country Churchyard'; by Thomas Gray.
With the freedom that Romanticism brought came the broadening of the writers horizons. The Middle Ages became topic of many stories and settings.
The nostalgia of more Gothic times put more exotic ideas into the author's minds. The supernatural became a substantial part of the literature.
Outcomes of this new idea were "Lines Written a Few Miles Above
Tintern Abbey';, by Wordsworth, and "The Castle of Otranto';, written by Horace Walpole.
The world of the supernatural and exoticness was reinforced by two main things. One was pure rebellion against the standards of the
eighteenth–century rationalism, such as the structure of neoclassical society. The second was the rediscovery of folk tales and ballads, particularly the
ones collected by Facob and Wilhelm Karl Grimm, also know as the Brothers Grimm.
These gave an inspiration to write many of the pieces of a supernatural nature for the writers of the Romantic Age.
The Romantic Age started to lose it's glitter by the middle of the nineteenth–century. Literature started to get serious again focusing on issues such as
problems of religion and faith and politics of the English democracy. Now instead of journeying to mythical places through the reading people

Elements Of Romantic Literature
The main aspects of Romantic literature focus on emotions and the narrator's inner world, celebrating nature, beauty and most importantly imagination.
This literary era rejects everything that has to do with rationalism, religion or industrialization, which were very important in the 1800s, however, not
liked much by literary figures. Many poems which were written after the late 1700s reflect on the elements of romanticism. The experimental language
and the interest in nature, spiritual elements and free mind shows through. Romanticism was not only a style in literature, but a genre and a movement
which was a foundation of our modern world.
The word "romantic" means something different in nowadays than it used to mean in the Romantic era. It comes from the word Roman and it could be
traced back to latin which later on was the base of Italian, French and Spanish, thus the Romantic languages. The writers of the Romantic period
reflected on the Classical periods and were characterized by emotions and intense imagines. The new era which brought the industrial revolution and a
new, modern society was not what people had hoped for. This confusing, complicated time made authors and artists think about how could they create
something extraordinary. However, not all authors from this period considered to be romantic. Susan Wolfson's and Peter Manning's introductory essay
"The Romantics and their Contemporaries" not only focuses on the poets and authors who have indulged in

Literary Analysis : Literary Elements
Literary Analysis Collection 1 Literary elements create and structure a story. They can be characters, plot, foreshadowing , mood , conflict ,setting,
theme , etcetera . Most of the time you see writers using a majority of these elements in a story. They can be similar or connected throughout different
stories or even the same story. They can also differ. In the stories Contents of the Dead Man's Pocket by Jack Finney, The Trip by Laila Lalami, and
Ambush by Tim O'Brien the writers compare and contrast literary elements. Characters are an important literary element, they can be narrators,
protagonists, antagonists, and more. In all the stories the main character has similarities and differences. In the three selections the main...show more

(quote). His trip was for freedom. It was still a dangerous situation and decision like the others. But, it was different because instead of being for
work or to save him life it was for something he has been longing for. However, just because all the dangerous decisions that the characters put
themselves into had different outcomes and consequences they still were dangerous and did/didn't harm that character physically and/or mentally. In
the stories the settings all reflect a tense and suspenseful mood. For example. Ambush, the setting was a place of war, the characters were
somewhere at war/fighting . That was tense because the characters could've died at an minute or someone could've been killed in an instant, that
alone creates a suspenseful mood. Like in Contents of a Dead Mans' Pocket most of all of the story took place on a ledge of an eleven–story apartment
building and being as though there was a person on there and that he could've fallen at any moment was very tense to me because he would've died
from the fall. Another story that creates suspense throughout the setting was The Trip, for most of the story the setting was a small boat with lots of
people that's only supposed to hold eight inside. The characters are also on a trip that they know they could die from at any moment. They know of
people that died on the same trip that they are endangering themselves on. They're all the same with setting and the mood it sets but

Short stories have many different literary elements and, you can compare all of them. All stories have something in common and something different
about them, that make them unique. The short stories, Contents of a Deadman's Pocket, The Leap, and The Trip all have elements of literature in
them. The elements that are the most important are theme, characters, setting and conflict. One of the similarities between The Leap and The Trip is
theme. Both stories have a theme of, sometimes taking risks can lead to a much better life. In The Leap Anna marries a new man after her first
husband died in a tragic accident, which is a big risk. In the story, the narrator describes her mother's ex–husband dying as "When her hands did not
meet her husbands, my mother tore her blindfold away." Anna ends up getting a daughter that she loves very much and realizes the risk of marrying
someone new was a great thing, and it paid off. In The Trip, Murad takes a dangerous boat from Morocco to Spain to find a new job illegally. On page

women and children all with the anxious look..." Murad does not make it but, when he tries again he is determined to make his life right for his family,

Literary Elements In Literature

  • 1. Literary Elements In Literature Throughout history, authors incorporate literary elements to enhance their writing. Literary elements are used to construct an author's writing to portray one's unique style and to convey the message that they want to bring to their readers. Literary elements add to a piece of writing in many ways. For example, an author may voice his or her perspective as expressed through the narrator in a story. The setting of a story helps the reader visualize the place and time in which the story occurs. At times, an author may use the literary technique of personification which gives nonhuman objects human abilities and characterizations. Authors such as Flannery O'Connor, James Joyce, and Katherine Mansfield use several literary techniques to develop their stories and portray their message. These three authors use irony which contradicts what was inferred by a specific character in the beginning of the story. At the start of the story the reader and the other characters in the story expect one thing to occur but as one reaches the end of the story the situation is flipped to be exactly the opposite of what was expected. In the story "A Good Man is Hard to Find", Flannery O'Connor uses the literary device of irony to help get across what he is trying to convey. In the story the grandmother plans a whole vacation for the family and ends up sending everyone to be doomed for the worse. The vacation went all wrong. The grandmother's intention was to plan a family vacation where everyone Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Gothic Literature Elements Essay Edgar Allen Poe was a popular author of gothic literature. Gothic Literature is a genre of writing that is dark or strange. There are eight elements of gothic literature. There has to be at least one of the eight elements for a piece of writing to be considered gothic. In "The Masque of the Red Death" three of the elements are a tyrannical male, a metonymy of gloom and horror, and supernatural elements. The first element used was a tyrannical male. All throughout Prince Prospero's kingdom, his people are dying from a horrible plague known as "The Red Death". Around every corner, people are dying or already dead, covered in the infamous scarlet red blood that is the most obvious sign of the red death, and all the prince could do was sit in...show more content... "Then, summoning the wild courage of despair, a throng of the revelers at opne threw themselves into the black apartment, and, seizing the mummer, whose tall figure stood erect and motionless within the shadow of the ebony clock, gasped in unutterable horror at finding the grave cerements and corpselike mask which they handled with so violent a rudeness, untenanted by any tangible form." pr. 11 As the guests attempted to capture the stranger, they realize that the clothing and mask are being worn by no human or object, and the red death had slipped it's way into the castle. There is no reasonable explaination for the mysterious figure that walked through the party and then just disappeared like an eerie mist, leaving the reader to assume that it was supernatural. There are many elements of gothic literature in "The Masque of the Red Death". The three elements mentioned before are a tyrannical male, a metonymy of gloom and horror and supernatural elements. The tyrannical male, Prince Prospero, deserted the people of his kingdom when they needed him the most. The ebony clock that chimed every hour, on the hour, symbolized how much time the guests had left. The mysterious, disappearing figure entered and exited the party like a phantom. The Elements Of Poetry Poetry is literary work in which the expression of feelings and ideas is given intensity by the use of distinctive style and rhythm, poems collectively or as a genre of literature. It is also a quality of beauty and intensity of emotion regarded as characteristic of poems. Poetry (poem) is something that follows a particular flow of rhythm and meter. Compare to prose, where there is no such restriction, and the content of the piece flows according to the story, a poem may or may not have a story, but definitely has structured method of writing. • 4. Nancy Paul ENG 200 Calley Hornbuckle PhD. November 5, 2017 Elements of Literature Literature is important just as important in today's society as it was in past societies. An entire culture exists within the written words that are placed on paper by poets writers and novelist. Literature is used to inspire, waken, or transform one's ideas or thoughts and can take you on a imaginary journey. Literary study involves the four processes of thinking, reading, writing, and discussing. Studying literature can increase one's knowledge, actively and intellectually challenging the way someone looks at the world. "Literature increases a readers awareness of cultural values, history, sociology, psychology, and almost every branch of human knowledge."(literary devices, n.d.) Literary devices are used to promote the reader's imagination. Literature devices are used by the writer to set a tone or theme to their stories. From the very beginning of time humans beings have been telling stories and literary devices been used throughout our history and play a key role. Story telling has evolved and the use of literary elements and literary techniques have played a large role in how a writer develop their poems or stories. Literary elements are the "universal constituents of literature"(literary devices, n.d.) and be found in any written story. • 5. Hemingway, Wilde and Poe are just some of the widely accredited authors that come to mind when great literature is often discussed. From my perspective, there are numerous various aspects that go into crafting a successful piece of literature which includes a Theme, Plot and the Tone of the story (The Seven Key Elements of Literature, 2017). While every piece of literature varies I believe that the conflict in any literary work proves to be the key aspect. Conflict creates enticing drama to keep the reader anxiously flipping through each page with bated breath impatiently awaiting the next plot twist. There are five main types of conflict and I plan to highlight the importance of. They are as follows: Human versus Human, Human versus Nature, Human versus Society, Human versus Supernatural and Human versus Self. Without conflict a reader would simply become disinterested with the piece since there is no real context embedded in the pages. Conflict is the disagreement or prolonged struggle that a protagonist is faced with it effects not only the plot but the way the characters are broadcasted to the reader. As stated above it is my belief that it is the most influential part of a piece of literature. One of my biggest struggles when reading a novel or a short story is becoming uninterested with a repetitive tone or lack of conflict between the character or surrounding factors such as society or nature. The drive that the narrator instills within the context of the pages Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Some of the most prominent examples of literary elements are irony, symbolism, and foreshadowing. All three elements create the feel and atmosphere of the short story. This shows that she is different from your average middle–aged woman, and that she and Grace do not have many things in common about their personality (Petry 1).When Alida Slade and Grace Ansley are looking at their daughters having fun in the moonlight, and Grace says "And perhaps we didn't know much more about each other", it shows that some drama is about to occur, and that she knew she had things that Alida did not know about her, and also that perhaps Alida felt the same way (Selina 1). "Roman Fever" demonstrates countless excellent cases of irony, symbolism, and foreshadowing. Different kinds of irony make "Roman Fever" entertaining during dialogue. Symbolism gives the story deeper meaning in small actions, for instance knitting, and setting details. Foreshadowing in the story baffles and intrigues. In conclusion, these are the three vital literary elements in Edith Wharton's "Roman Fever". They capture the reader from the playful beginning to the jaw dropping end. Every element represents difference explanation and interpretation of what is the meanings that author want to deliver to the reader. • 10. The Five Elements Of Literature Of The Iliad Ancient Greece, 756 BC, war is raging between the Greeks and the Trojans; this is the Iliad, by Homer, an epic tale of the battle of Troy. In this epic, Helen of Troy is kidnapped, starting a war between the Greeks and Romans. Achilles leads the battle by sea; after the war rages on sea, Achilles returns to fight Hector, who has stolen Helen, leading to Hector's death. To create the Iliad, Homer used the Five Elements of Literature: plot, character, conflict, and theme. The Iliad is composed of twenty–four books all piled together; therefore, it is a very long epic. In the beginning, Agamemnon is in need of Achilles without realizing it; he is sent a "Lying Dream" from Zeus instructing him to battle Troy all at once. This prophetic dream, according to the author, took "nine years before that they would take Troy." This ten–year struggle was caused by the so called most beautiful women, Helen – who was kidnapped and taken hostage; she was the so–called 'prize' to whomever wins. The war is raging between the Trojan Army and the Greeks; Agamemnon weeps in despair considering surrender of the Trojans. At a last resort, the story states that, "An embassy of three men–Phoenix, Ajax, Odysseus–takes the news to Achilles"; thus, bringing Achilles into battle. As the war is coming to a close in the last few books, Achilles suffers a loss of friendship due to Hector. Patroclus is killed sending Achilles into a horrible grief. • 11. Literary Elements In The Iliad The Iliad: Analysis For thousands of years, writers and authors have used the five literary elements of a story to write their own creations. Homer, author of the Iliad, while living in the BC era was able to capture, illustrate, and use all five elements: plot, character, conflict, theme, and setting. There are three main plots present in the synopsis, or summary, of the Iliad; the first is when Paris took Helen away from her husband Menelaus. "...Trojan prince Paris (Alexandrus)–– whose abduction of Helen caused the war–– challenges an Archaean champion." The quote from the story highlights the severity of the situation and it later caused problems for both sides. "...spears Patroclus from behind; Hector delivers the death blow." Later, when Patroclus pretends to be Achilles to appear fearsome in the face of the Greeks, he is killed by Hector which throws Achilles into a bloody rage. "The sight and sound of the mighty hero throw the Trojans into a costly panic...Hector loses his nerve and runs..." The last, and most important part of the plot is when Achilles murders Hector as an act of revenge in the name of his fallen comrade. Out of all of the characters in the Iliad, Achilles,Odysseus, and Agamemnon are the most important for the roles that they play though the story. As written in the Synopsis,"Odysseus rallies the leaders and bullies the common soldier." This outlines the early leadership role that Odysseus had from the beginning. • 12. Literary Elements In A & P Life is always about making important decisions that could change your life completely. Like the story A&P, Sammy made a huge decision to quit his job due to his boss being rude to three young girls wearing bathing suits. John Updike used several literary elements to make the story stand out and for people to relate to Sammy. The most important elements that is used in this story is setting, point of view, and characters. Firstly, setting plays a crucial part of the story because of where and when the story takes place. This story takes place around the 1950's in the United States near Boston. In the story, it read "It's not as if we're on the Cape; we're north of Boston and there's people in this town haven't seen the ocean for twenty years." (Updike) This quote demonstrates of why the locals in the town where so upset to see the three young girls wearing only their bathing suits in the supermarket. This also takes place in a much older generation that is not okay with people walking around with revealing clothing. That is why Sammy's boss, Lengel was so upset with the...show more content... A&P is in first person perspective and is portrayed by Sammy the nineteen–year–old cashier. You can easily tell that the point of view is based on a nineteen–year–old due to the first sentence. It reads "In walks these three girls in nothing but bathing suits. I'm in the third check–out slot, with my back to the door, so I don't see them until they're over by the bread." (Updike) The way that Sammy is talking is childish and someone that is in their thirties or older would not talk like that. John Updike made sure to make Sammy of a mind of a nineteen–year–old. Another proof of that is "I look around for my girls, but they're gone, of course. There wasn't anybody but some young married screaming with her children about some candy they didn't get by the door of a powder–blue Falcon station wagon." Get more content on HelpWriting.net

We have learned how to use common literary elements to help us read into a story beyond the text. From the first independent book we read to short stories we read together in class, we have all improved drastically as writers. The first thing we did in starting our English ten honors course was to pick an independent book to read over the summer. I picked The Da Vinci Code written by Dan Brown. Our assignment for this was to name three literary elements the author used well. I said that the best used literary elements used in this novel are point of view, symbolism, and foreshadowing. The reasoning behind each of these was written...show more content... The improvement of writing speeches between these four months was drastic. We also developed abetter understanding of the literary element authors use in their writing. In January we wrote a paragraph explaining how and why authors use diction in their writing. Before doing this we went through an exercise of trying to put certain words into a poem to convey the mood. After this we read Snow Falling on Cedars and wrote an essay Explaining why and how Ishmael is the protagonist of the story. This was proven by showing how the conflict, climax, and the resolution were centered around him. We planned this out using a plot diagram to explain the climax, conflict, and resolution of the story. The main problems within this essay were possessives, along with the use of commas for appositives. The last piece of writing we did this year was on ten short stories we read in class. We did a plot diagram for each of these short stories to have a better understanding of all the parts of theme. This was similar to what we did with Snow Falling on Cedars. There were few mistakes in this piece besides a few proofreading errors. Over the course of English ten honors, you can see my writing and reading skills grow and improve.Over the past year our class has learned many things that have helped make us better readers and writers. • 14. Essay on Romanticism In Literature Romanticism In Literature Romanticism in literature, began around 1750 and lasted until 1870. Different from the classical ways of Neoclassical Age(1660–1798), it relied on imagination, idealization of nature and freedom of thought and expression. Two men who influenced the era with their writings were William Wordsworth and SamuelTaylor Coleridge, both English poets of the time. Their edition of "Lyrical Ballads';, stressed the importance of feeling and imagination. Thus in romantic Literature the code was imagination over reason, emotion over logic, and finally intuition over science. All of these new ways discouraged and didn't tolerate the more classic way of literature. Other significant writers of the...show more content... References to this can be found in "Ode to Evening'; by William Collins, and "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard'; by Thomas Gray. With the freedom that Romanticism brought came the broadening of the writers horizons. The Middle Ages became topic of many stories and settings. The nostalgia of more Gothic times put more exotic ideas into the author's minds. The supernatural became a substantial part of the literature. Outcomes of this new idea were "Lines Written a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey';, by Wordsworth, and "The Castle of Otranto';, written by Horace Walpole. The world of the supernatural and exoticness was reinforced by two main things. One was pure rebellion against the standards of the eighteenth–century rationalism, such as the structure of neoclassical society. The second was the rediscovery of folk tales and ballads, particularly the ones collected by Facob and Wilhelm Karl Grimm, also know as the Brothers Grimm. These gave an inspiration to write many of the pieces of a supernatural nature for the writers of the Romantic Age. The Romantic Age started to lose it's glitter by the middle of the nineteenth–century. Literature started to get serious again focusing on issues such as problems of religion and faith and politics of the English democracy. Now instead of journeying to mythical places through the reading people

  • 16. Elements Of Romantic Literature The main aspects of Romantic literature focus on emotions and the narrator's inner world, celebrating nature, beauty and most importantly imagination. This literary era rejects everything that has to do with rationalism, religion or industrialization, which were very important in the 1800s, however, not liked much by literary figures. Many poems which were written after the late 1700s reflect on the elements of romanticism. The experimental language and the interest in nature, spiritual elements and free mind shows through. Romanticism was not only a style in literature, but a genre and a movement which was a foundation of our modern world. The word "romantic" means something different in nowadays than it used to mean in the Romantic era. It comes from the word Roman and it could be traced back to latin which later on was the base of Italian, French and Spanish, thus the Romantic languages. The writers of the Romantic period reflected on the Classical periods and were characterized by emotions and intense imagines. The new era which brought the industrial revolution and a new, modern society was not what people had hoped for. This confusing, complicated time made authors and artists think about how could they create something extraordinary. However, not all authors from this period considered to be romantic. Susan Wolfson's and Peter Manning's introductory essay "The Romantics and their Contemporaries" not only focuses on the poets and authors who have indulged in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Literary Analysis : Literary Elements Literary Analysis Collection 1 Literary elements create and structure a story. They can be characters, plot, foreshadowing , mood , conflict ,setting, theme , etcetera . Most of the time you see writers using a majority of these elements in a story. They can be similar or connected throughout different stories or even the same story. They can also differ.
