3. Welcome to OneStep CPD
OneStep is an innovative, bespoke CPD service that provides action-research
based professional development to teachers. It has been developed and tested
by a team of teachers to improve teaching and learning in classrooms with
evidence-informed practice, one step at a time.
I would recommend the CPD process to a friend as it’s
time-saving for finding things that work; often when
you look online for something you spend so much time
searching you might as well have made it yourself! This
is an easy to find catalogue of proven strategies.

5. Journey
OneStep CPD grew out of conversations Twinkl had with teachers, that their CPD
was not satisfactory enough. We had in-depth interviews with teachers from
primary, secondary and middle schools; private, grammar and comprehensive;
international and UK based. What we found was teachers weren’t satisfied
with the CPD they were receiving and they needed something new, bespoke
and innovative.

6. Teacher Made, Teacher Tested
The Process
We designed an action-research model that we then tested our process with
teachers in the UK, and some in international schools in Brunei and Jordan.
Our process is done in class time and on average each initiative requires 1 hour of
documentation over 6 weeks.
Online access to over 150 strategies based on
academic and proven methods
Choose one to put into place in your classroom
for 6 weeks
Update progress tracker weekly and fill in a
mid-point review
Evaluate on your initiative after 6 weeks and
upload evidence
Teachers receive a case study as a certificate of
their CPD
I liked the individuality of the process. The CPD was
relevant to me and my personal development target
Jak Boston, Primary Teacher, International School
in Brunei
7. Academic
All of our strategies are based on the work of an author, academic
or experienced teacher. Our writers are also teachers, and they
have condensed the work down into easy to apply strategies.
Actionable
Each of our strategies is an A4 document that conveys a step-
by-step guide of how to apply it into the classroom. It also has
examples from our teachers of how they would apply these
strategies to their classrooms
Accessible
Teachers do their CPD during class time. On average it takes 1
hour to do the required documentation over the 6 week initiative,
but all the testing and application is done whilst the teacher is in
front of their class
As our process is all online, it can be physically accessed from
anywhere, reducing reliance on paper. Each teacher also has full
access to their portfolio of case studies
Meaningful
Our CPD is bespoke and individual - a teacher chooses the
initiative they want to run and so have chosen something that
is meaningful to them. It’s not a box ticking exercise, it’s a way
teachers can genuinely work on their personal professional
development
So in planning our new, innovative approach, we ensured our CPD met a high
benchmark and fulfilled schools’ and teachers’ needs.
Teacher Made, Teacher Tested
8. Each strategy has been inspired by a author, academic, or experienced teacher.
We have taken inspiration and read their work, condensing their advice and
strategies into A4 PDFs.
Our writers are also teachers, and they have considered how they would apply each
strategy into a classroom.
We do recommend you go and read their work for yourselves. Use our process to
evaluate the impact this strategy has in your classroom and prove whether it is
worth using.
Our Strategies
How you can use our strategies
Find a solution to your problem
A teacher in Sheffield’s class struggled to use capital letters
and full stops consistently. She used the “Slow Sentence
Paragraph” strategy by David Didau to reinforce it to her pupils,
and found that it worked.
Prove whether a method you already use has a positive impact
on teaching and learning
A French teacher had been using weekly subject knowledge
tests for years, but didn’t know what impact it had. She applied
“Regular Subject Knowledge Tests” and pupils achieved higher
results in their GCSE speaking test than they had in their mocks.
Discover alternative impacts that strategies have
A primary Maths teacher wanted to stop her pupils making
the same mistakes over and over again. She used Effective
Feedback in Maths to do this. She found it had no effect on her
pupils not repeating mistakes, but she did find that it make her
planning more accurate and efficient as it informed what pupils
did and didn’t know.I could immediately see how I could relate the strategy
to my own practice - it was straightforward and easy
to apply. It’s time-saving for finding things that work.
Really like the bespoke nature of it.

13. Suggestions for
implementation in schools
1 teacher, 1 strategy
Allow each teacher to choose a strategy that fits in with their professional
development. They individually work on a strategy for 6-weeks at a time.
Triads
Have groups of 3 teachers who have similar professional development targets.
Each triad choses the same strategy to test in their classrooms, and they are there
to support each other and compare the effectiveness of the strategy.
Year/department trial
If there is a target or development in a particular year group or department, ask
all relevant teachers to do the same strategy to see if it ‘solves’ or works towards
helping the problem
NQTs/“Coasting” Teachers
Provide our service to NQTs to encourage them to implement consistent
intervention and continue to reflect, or to encourage more experienced teachers
to reflect and implement new strategies.
When you’ve been teaching for as long as I have, you
know all the things but need reminding about what’s
effective. You need to evaluate your own practise and
change the way you do certain things.
Bethan Drew, supply teacher
14. Testimonies
It’s step-by-step easy! It’s a simple idea that has shown
me what my pupils can and can’t do. The 6-weeks
is a short period as well so you know how well it’s
going immediately
Laura Slater, Secondary Teacher, Stockport
The process made me reflect on my current practice
which is always a good thing to do. The process was
supportive and documentation not overly long, which is
good for teachers who are short of time
Katie Pratt, HLTA, Primary School, Inverness
So much better than being given something where
you don’t know where it can be applied. You know how
you’re going to apply it and you’ve chosen it
Jenny McKenchnie, Secondary Teacher, Sheffield
Easy, straightforward, and the documents prompted
you. I could see the obvious immediate impact which
made it more engaging
Charlotte Vallis, Secondary Teacher, York
