2. INTRODUCTION
 The Library is a building where information
materials such as books, recordings,
manuscripts, audio visuals, etc (which could
be in forms of print and non-print) are kept
for use. Its is also a collection of intellectual
materials.
 The Library as a building or collection of
intellectual materials requires personnel to
effectively function.
 One of such personnel is the LIBRARY
PORTER.

3. THE LIBRARY PORTER
• The Library Porter is the personnel that
man the Library reception
• He is the first person to interact with
library users/visitors

4. THE PORTER’S MAIN JOB PURPOSE
See to the opening and
closing of the Library
Staff the main reception
point
Welcome library users and
visitors

5. MAIN JOB PURPOSE

Provide information to
library users and visitors
Check library users passes
and information materials
Play an important part in the
care and security of library
buildings and collections

6. THE PORTER’S PERSONAL

9. THE PORTER’S RESPONSIBILITIES
The Porter’s responsibility are but not limited
to:
 responsible for the opening and closing
of Library facilities, including the
setting of Security Alarms
 check all people entering Library
premises and ensure that they have a
valid reason for access

10. PORTER’S RESPONSIBILITIES CONT
 prevent, as far as is reasonably
practicable, damage to or removal of
Library assets by performing searches
as individuals enter and leave Library
building.
 present a professional and customer
orientated image to Library users and
visitors.

11. PORTER’S RESPONSIBILITIES CONT
 administer emergency procedures,
security functions and maintain records
associated with the buildings Security
Points
 respond to general enquiries and direct
library users and visitors to appropriate
section or unit that best meet enquiries
beyond his/her knowledge.

12. PORTER’S RESPONSIBILITIES CONT
To undertake additional duties,
appropriate to the post holders
grade and training, as directed.
