The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy led by Queen Elizabeth II as head of state. Some of the Queen's powers include summoning and dismissing Parliament, appointing government ministers and judges, and approving treaties and declarations of war. Originally third in line to succeed the throne, Elizabeth became heir presumptive after her uncle King Edward VIII abdicated to marry Wallis Simpson in 1936, allowing her father to become King and her to become first in line for the throne.
