Private Finance for Sustainable Development Conference week:
The Impact Imperative

Managing for development impact:
Key building blocks for donors and DFIs
Tuesday 15 January, 14:00 – 15:30, Room BB1
Applying a development results lens to private sector engagement in development co-operation is a
requisite if development co-operation providers are to demonstrate the impact of their investment on
sustainable development. There are many benefits associated with applying such a results focus:
related results information can be used for accountability and communication, but also for learning
what works and does not and, in turn, making strategic decisions to improve the effectiveness of the
investment.
Still, incorporating partnerships and projects involving private sector actors into results-based
management approaches and systems requires several adaptations in the results chain architecture.
As discussed at the OECD/DAC Results Community workshop in April 2018, these range from the
selection of appropriate SDG targets as the ultimate goals; a theory of change articulating how
development outcomes will be achieved and will contribute to those SDGs; monitoring systems with
key indicators that meet the needs of all stakeholders including partner countries; guidance for
assessing additionality in the context of private sector investment; to setting up appropriate incentives
and feedback loops to ensure the needed information is disclosed, and data are collected and used.
Numerous initiatives are taking place to better manage public policies and programmes targeting
private sector development and involving private sector actors, and ensure this support leads to
sustainable development outcomes. Acknowledging existing initiatives and principles, the session will
explore what key building blocks donor agencies and development finance institutions need to put in
place to ensure strong development impact from their investment in private sector development.
Participants will be invited to share experiences and good practices.
