“The cloud is a great equaliser. Smaller,
mid-sized business can now have the
capacity once the exclusive to larger
enterprise. Conversely, larger companies
now have the agility once considered
the key advantage of the mid sized. On
this new level playing field, only those
companies who move with the times
will survive the disruption.”

AUSTRALIA ON A FAST TRACK NEW BUSINESS MODELS ONLY SOME BUSINESSES ARE
TRANSFORMATION READY
Australia is on a digital transformation fast track,
creating over 24% of new roles from 2018 to 2022
and adding an additional $45 billion in GDP.1
From
2015 to 2030 the Australian Government estimates
the economic gain of transferring Australian
workers to new skills to be $2.6 trillion.2
McKinsey
estimates digitalisation may contribute between
AU $140 billion and AU$250 billion to Australia’s
GDP by 2025, based on currently available
technology alone.3
Business lifecycles are shortening as speed to
innovate, scale and execution bring new ideas to
market faster than ever before.
The drivers of profit for business models are
changing. Australian Government studies have
identified a shift from asset intensive businesses to
asset light, idea rich companies, such as internet,
fintech and pharma, which have doubled their
profits since 2000 to 31 per cent today.4
Transformation includes digital, process and
business innovation. Transformation has penetrated
some sectors faster than others. Calypsi’s audits reveal
most medium sized businesses are still unaware of the
tremendous impact transformation will have on their
business, while agile market leaders have already
positioned themselves for the changes ahead.

CLOUD BASED TECHNOLOGY PUTS
TRANSFORMATION WITHIN REACH
No longer the privilege of large enterprise,
transformation has and will increasingly disrupt
medium sized Australian businesses. In many ways,
medium sized businesses, unencumbered by scale,
have the potential to be more nimble than large
scale enterprise. With the right choice of strategy
and technology, mid size firms can be first to market
with bold and compelling products and services.
While the nimble advantage remains, the
greater agility in larger firms will gradually close
the window of opportunity for mid sized firms.
Speed to market will be a significant driver of
value and competitive advantage.

NEW JOBS
Predictions are jobs will shift from production
(manufacturing) and transaction (rules based
jobs such as clerks) to interaction (nurses and
construction workers). Interaction jobs, which
manage complex human interactions, will
increase from 50% to 60% of jobs in
Australia by 2030.

Collaboration will drive profitability and innovation.
In 2018, 36% of businesses were working with double
the partners they were working with in 2016. An
increasingly collaborative way of working will
continue to drive revenue. Collaboration includes
both open collaboration and internal collaboration
through platform based technology. Studies have
shown the more a company communicates and
collaborates, the more innovative it becomes.

BETWEEN BUSINESS AND IT
Business co-authors innovations with IT, sharing
a common understanding of capabilities and
roadmaps rather than projects and milestones.
Businesses will change their way of working
from projects with end dates to products
with continuous improvements. Continuous
improvement means continuous integration and
continuous delivery of IT.
CFO’s and CIO’s develop business cases based on
value created, ie how much EBIT can be generated
in each iteration rather than costs based on
current P&L’s. The investment in demand driven IT
can be calculated as a compounding return
not a sunk investment.
