Introduction of the Victorian
Age
• Victorian literature is that produce
during the queen Victoria ( 1837-
1901) or the Victoria era.
• The literature of this era was
preceded by Romanticism and was
followed by modemism or realism.

ELIZABETH BARRETT BROWNING:
• Elizabeth Barrett Browning was an
English poet of Victorian era.
• She was born in Country Durham,
the eldest of 12 children, Elizabeth
Barrett wrote poetry from about the
age of six.
• Victorian poet Elizabeth Barrett
Browning is perhaps known for her ‘
sonnets from the Portuguese’ and
‘Aurora Leigh.’

• Lord Walter’s Wife (1862)

• How Do I love Three?
ELIZABETH’S WORK
“HOW DO I LOVE THREE?”
• This poem is about love, admiration,
identity, and morality.
• The speaker asks how she loves her beloved
and tries to list the different ways in which
she loves him.
• Her love seems to be etemal and to exist
everywhere, and she intends to continue
loving him her own death.
ROBERT BROWNING:
• He was born in Camberwell, England.
• He was master of monologue.
• Browning started writing poetry at the age
of 12.
• At the age of 14 he was fluent in French,
Greek, Italian and Latin. He was became a
great admire of the Romantic poets.
• At the age of 16, he attended the
university college, London.

“ Dramatic Romances and Lyrics”.
• “My Last Duchess”

BROWNING’S WORK “ MY
LAST DUCHESS”
• it is example of dramatic monoly. The poem
shows art, culture, madness and jealousy.
• Duke had murdered his 17 year old wife
after three of marriage and married
another girl.
• This poem is all about power the political
and social power by speaker and his attempt
to control the domestic sphere in the same
way he rules his lands.
ALFRED LORD TENNYSON:
• He was a student of king Edward VI
Grammar school, Louth.
• Tennyson and Hallam were part of
literary group called the Apostles.
• Tennyson’s first collection of poetry,
poems “chiefly Lyrical” was
published in 1830.

MATHEW ARNOLD
• Mathew Arnold Born in 24 December
Laleham, Middlesex, England.
• He was an English poet and cultural critic.
• He was elected professor of poetry at oxford
in 1857,and he was the first in this position
to deliver his lecture in English rather than
the Latin.

ARNOLD’S WORK “DOVER
BEACH”
• “Dover Beach” is a Lyric poem by Arnold.
• it was first published in 1867.
• “Dover Beach” talk about the challenges to
the validity of long- standing theological and
moral precepts have shaken the faith of
people in God and religion.
• This poem based on sadness, suffering,
spirituality, the natural world, existence and
life.

ELIZABETH BARRETT BROWNING: • Elizabeth Barrett Browning was an English poet of Victorian era. • She was born in Country Durham, the eldest of 12 children, Elizabeth Barrett wrote poetry from about the age of six. • Victorian poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning is perhaps known for her ‘ sonnets from the Portuguese’ and ‘Aurora Leigh.’
