2. Identify 2D Shapes

● Look at basic 2D shapes and name them so that your child can identify them. Source- math-salamanders.com
● You could draw the shapes, print some out or look for them within the environment.

TRY:
● A shape hunt when out and about on a walk. Talk about the shape of the road sign or the markings
on the road.
● Matching shapes to their names. You could use post it notes for this and easily make your own set.
● Mystery shape- hide some shapes in a bag or box. Pick one out without anyone seeing and describe
it. Can anyone guess the shape? You could say ‘It has 3 sides, it has 3 vertices (corners) and it is
2d.’

4. Symmetry

has other ideas for teaching symmetry.
● Look at shapes with a mirror. Place the mirror down the middle. Does the shape look
the same on both sides?
● Talk about symmetry in nature such as butterflies.
TRY:
● Butterfly painting. Paint one side of paper. Fold it over and watch the symmetrical pattern appear.

● Make a nature picture. Place a large stick on the ground. Use sticks, stones, petals etc to make both
sides of the stick symmetrical.
● Use a pegboard and make a symmetrical pattern.
● Make a symmetrical lego pattern.
● Print out a picture of your child and fold in half. Stick it to a piece of paper and ask them to draw the
other half. You could also do this with leaves.
