• The Old Man and the sea
is short novel written by
the American author
Ernest Hemingway in
1951 in Cuba, and
published in 1952. It was
the last major work of
fiction by Hemingway that
was published during his
lifetime.

• The Moby Dick is a
novel by American
writer Herman Melville.
• The book is sailor
Ishmael’s narrative of
the obsessive quest of
Ahab, captain of the
Whaling ship pequod,
for revenge on Moby
Dick, the giant white
sperm whale.
4. Main Characters in Old Man and The
Sea
• Santiago - The old man of novella’s title,
Santiago is a Cuban fisherman who has had an
extended run for bad luck.
• The Marlin – Santiago hooks the marlin, which
we learn at the end of the novella measures
eighteen feet, on the first afternoon of his
fishing expedition.
• Manolin – A boy presumably in his
adolescence, Manolin is Santiago’s apprentice
and devoted attendant.

6. Main characters in Moby Dick
• Ishmael – The narrator, and the junior
member of the crew of the pequod. Ishmael
doesn’t play a major role in the events of the
novel.
• Ahab – He is a captain of pequod . He lost his
leg to Moby Dick.
• Moby Dick – The great white sperm whale.
Moby Dick, also referred to as the white
whale, is an infamous and dangerous threat to
seamen, considered by Ahab the incarnation
of evil and fated nemesis.
8. Santiago’s character
• He is an old man. That’s why fishing becomes
difficult for him.
• He is ill. He is physically because he is old weak
but mentally he is strong.
• He has been unable to catch a fish for eighty-four
days. He is humble, yet exhibits a justified pride
in his abilities.
• His knowledge of the sea and its creatures, and of
his craft, is unparalleled and helps him preserve a
sense of hope regardless of circumstances.

• Throughout his life, Santiago has been
presented with contests to test his strength
and endurance.
• The Marlin with which he struggles for three
days represents his greatest challenge.
• Paradoxically although Santiago ultimately
loses the fish, the marlin is also his greatest
victory.
• At the end of the novel he sleeps and the
novel ends.
10. Ahab’s Character
• He is fictional character and the main
protagonist.
• On a previous voyage , the white whale Moby
Dick bit off Ahab’s leg, and he now wears a
prosthetic leg made of whalebone.
• The Waling voyage of the Pequod ends up as a
hunt for revenge on the whale, as Ahab forces
the crew members to support his fanatical
mission.

hatred robs him all of caution, and the whale
drags Ahab to the bottom of the sea.

• In the Old Man and The Sea, Santiago's
companion mocks on him.
• But In The Moby Dick Ahab’s companion gives
support to him.
• Old man struggles to prove his self in front of his
companion.
• And In the Moby Dick he wants to take his
revenge, to kill Moby Dick.

• I compare both novel because in both
novel sea life, struggle is there.
• In both the novel Fish becomes the
reason of their struggle.
