The Challenge
Globally, hospitals are suffering from the twin pressures of increased demand
for care and cost.
	 • Hospitals are challenged to improve the efficiency and coordination
of care in a financially constrained environment
	 • Physicians are challenged to keep abreast of a growing body of literature
and changing clinical practice guidelines
	 • New tools are needed to facilitate physician access to comprehensive
and trusted content sources that increase efficiency of clinical workflow
The Solution
ClinicalKey is a knowledge access tool that supports physicians through:
	 • Fast and easy access to multiple types of content,
on-site or remotely, that align with physician’s workflows
	 • Access to the most current, trusted, evidence-based
content for all specialties
	 • The best, evidence-based, full-text resources, all in 1 place that are
updated frequently by experts
ClinicalKey helps physicians find the best answers by delivering all of Elsevier’s
medical and surgical content in 1 dynamic resource, including access to over
1,000 top books, over 600 top journals, thousands of videos and millions of
images, as well as immediate access to specific guidelines.
The Study
While ClinicalKey was being rolled out in the Orlando Health System, a case
study was conducted to assess the ability of ClinicalKey to address the
challenges faced by hospitals and physicians.
Orlando Health
Orlando Health is one of Florida’s most comprehensive, private, not for profit,
health care networks.
	 • Composed of a 1,780-bed family of facilities with 8 different sites and
thousands of doctors
	 • Includes 4 community hospitals, 3 speciality hospitals, and 1 cancer center
It is a large, integrated system representative of many other health care systems
facing the challenges described above.

ClinicalKey
A Case Study at a Large
Integrated Health System
Positive Perceptions Over Time
Participants’ perceptions of ClinicalKey improved over time.
The positive change in perception of ClinicalKey also translated into increased
perceived benefit across several key outcomes. Orlando Health physicians found
that using ClinicalKey helped support patient education and improve patient
satisfaction with the delivery of care, while also saving time and increasing
efficiency of clinical processes. They also found that the more they integrated
ClinicalKey into their work process, the more value they obtained from it. All of
these outcomes are due to the fast and easy access to a wide range of high-quality,
trusted and current evidence, across specialties, which is all located in 1 place.
*Values represent mean ratings on a scale from 1 to 7, where 1 = do not agree at all and 7 = agree completely.
Conclusions
The availability of trusted, high-quality content across a wide range of topics
and specialties was perceived as the top benefit of ClinicalKey by Orlando
Health participants. ClinicalKey provided in-depth background on diagnoses,
conditions, and treatments to further build physicians’ knowledge, support them
in providing patient education, and assist them in preparing for presentations to
peers or talks at conferences.
As revealed by the research conducted with health care professionals at Orlando
Health, advantages of a superior knowledge access tool such as ClinicalKey
could include:
	 • Saved time (especially when conducting in-depth background research)
	 • Better quality of care and better treatment approaches (through
immediate access to reliable and thorough information in 1 resource)
	• Increased patient satisfaction (due to better treatment and/or access to
patient educational resources)
ClinicalKey is easy to implement, and provides quick and easy access to
information to support evidence-based decision-making.

Comprehensive Information
While using ClinicalKey, physicians from various specialties consistently reported
being able to find more comprehensive information in 1 place (including the
journals on which they typically rely).*
*Physicians responses after using ClinicalKey to search for background information on treatment options,
side-effect management, or indication for surgical techniques.
Fast Access to Trusted Resources
In this round of tasks, physicians indicated that ClinicalKey provided fast access
to trusted resources, including First Consult, a point-of-care decision-making
tool available within ClinicalKey. They also noted the value of ClinicalKey in
preparing for presentations.*
*Physician responses after using ClinicalKey to search for information on best practice guidelines for diagnosis
and treatment.
The Objective
The objective of the case study was to explore physician’s thoughts on the
functionality (eg, ease of use and speed to answer) and content (eg, quality,
depth, and breath) of ClinicalKey to determine if it could address their
challenges.
The Methods
Health care professionals from Orlando Health participated in this 2-month
study. All were full-time employees or completing their residency at Orlando
Health, and reported being comfortable using technology and/or knowledge
access tools. Participants included:
• Internal medicine (IM) physicians
• Emergency medicine (ER) physicians
• A surgeon
Between November and December 2013, each of the 10 participants
completed 5 phone in-depth interviews (baseline and 4 follow-up interviews)
and were asked to complete 8 search tasks (2 prior to each follow-up interview;
customized for each specialty). Participants completed response forms
detailing their experience with each task, which were reviewed during interviews.
Each interview was 30 minutes in length.
Participants spontaneously described an ideal knowledge access tool that would
address their current challenges and unmet needs.
The Results
The majority of participants reported being comfortable using ClinicalKey,
satisfied with their experience, and pleased with the value provided by
ClinicalKey after 2 months. Physicians reported good understanding and
appreciation of ClinicalKey potential, which was considered more valuable than
UpToDate for many important tasks.
The follow-up interviews provided useful insight into the application of
ClinicalKey to successfully address physicians’ unmet needs. ClinicalKey
was found to be especially useful for tasks related to background information
searching.

Orlando Health Case Study 2014

  • 1. Date: 3/7/2014 Author: MedErgy Scientific The Challenge Globally, hospitals are suffering from the twin pressures of increased demand for care and cost. • Hospitals are challenged to improve the efficiency and coordination of care in a financially constrained environment • Physicians are challenged to keep abreast of a growing body of literature and changing clinical practice guidelines • New tools are needed to facilitate physician access to comprehensive and trusted content sources that increase efficiency of clinical workflow The Solution ClinicalKey is a knowledge access tool that supports physicians through: • Fast and easy access to multiple types of content, on-site or remotely, that align with physician’s workflows • Access to the most current, trusted, evidence-based content for all specialties • The best, evidence-based, full-text resources, all in 1 place that are updated frequently by experts ClinicalKey helps physicians find the best answers by delivering all of Elsevier’s medical and surgical content in 1 dynamic resource, including access to over 1,000 top books, over 600 top journals, thousands of videos and millions of images, as well as immediate access to specific guidelines. The Study While ClinicalKey was being rolled out in the Orlando Health System, a case study was conducted to assess the ability of ClinicalKey to address the challenges faced by hospitals and physicians. Orlando Health Orlando Health is one of Florida’s most comprehensive, private, not for profit, health care networks. • Composed of a 1,780-bed family of facilities with 8 different sites and thousands of doctors • Includes 4 community hospitals, 3 speciality hospitals, and 1 cancer center It is a large, integrated system representative of many other health care systems facing the challenges described above. ClinicalKey at Orlando Health A Case Study at a Large Integrated Health System “An easier way to make use of the technology that’s provided for us. I think that would be the challenge, get a source that would serve us as a whole instead of trying to use different places to try and obtain information.” – Elly Benzaquen Parkes, MD, Internal Medicine Contact Us: Online: ClinicalKey.com Phone: 314.523.4900 Date: 3/7/2014 Author: MedErgy Scientific ClinicalKey A Case Study at a Large Integrated Health System Positive Perceptions Over Time Participants’ perceptions of ClinicalKey improved over time. The positive change in perception of ClinicalKey also translated into increased perceived benefit across several key outcomes. Orlando Health physicians found that using ClinicalKey helped support patient education and improve patient satisfaction with the delivery of care, while also saving time and increasing efficiency of clinical processes. They also found that the more they integrated ClinicalKey into their work process, the more value they obtained from it. All of these outcomes are due to the fast and easy access to a wide range of high-quality, trusted and current evidence, across specialties, which is all located in 1 place. *Values represent mean ratings on a scale from 1 to 7, where 1 = do not agree at all and 7 = agree completely. Conclusions The availability of trusted, high-quality content across a wide range of topics and specialties was perceived as the top benefit of ClinicalKey by Orlando Health participants. ClinicalKey provided in-depth background on diagnoses, conditions, and treatments to further build physicians’ knowledge, support them in providing patient education, and assist them in preparing for presentations to peers or talks at conferences. As revealed by the research conducted with health care professionals at Orlando Health, advantages of a superior knowledge access tool such as ClinicalKey could include: • Saved time (especially when conducting in-depth background research) • Better quality of care and better treatment approaches (through immediate access to reliable and thorough information in 1 resource) • Increased patient satisfaction (due to better treatment and/or access to patient educational resources) ClinicalKey is easy to implement, and provides quick and easy access to information to support evidence-based decision-making. 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Improves access to approved clinical guidelines Positively impacts clinical outcomes Allows for more efficient clinical processes Improves patient satisfaction Saves timeSupports me in providing patient education Levelofagreement Follow-up Interview 4 (n = 10)Follow-up Interview 1 (n = 9) Internal Medicine “Actually, the more I use ClinicalKey, the more comfortable I’m getting with it. I thought that it’s very time saving and it’s very useful in helping me find what I need very quickly.” Emergency Medicine “The more used to ClinicalKey I got, the more trustworthy I felt the book resources were, the more trustworthy the First Consult was...” Emergency Medicine “This round of search tasks [round 3], I think I got so used to using the site, and knowing what to look for, that it was really easy.” “Quickly ref reshing myself on a topic and p roviding education to my patient… would help me expedite the process of care for the patient.” – Emergency Medicine Physician
  • 2. Comprehensive Information While using ClinicalKey, physicians from various specialties consistently reported being able to find more comprehensive information in 1 place (including the journals on which they typically rely).* *Physicians responses after using ClinicalKey to search for background information on treatment options, side-effect management, or indication for surgical techniques. Fast Access to Trusted Resources In this round of tasks, physicians indicated that ClinicalKey provided fast access to trusted resources, including First Consult, a point-of-care decision-making tool available within ClinicalKey. They also noted the value of ClinicalKey in preparing for presentations.* *Physician responses after using ClinicalKey to search for information on best practice guidelines for diagnosis and treatment. The Objective The objective of the case study was to explore physician’s thoughts on the functionality (eg, ease of use and speed to answer) and content (eg, quality, depth, and breath) of ClinicalKey to determine if it could address their challenges. The Methods Health care professionals from Orlando Health participated in this 2-month study. All were full-time employees or completing their residency at Orlando Health, and reported being comfortable using technology and/or knowledge access tools. Participants included: • Internal medicine (IM) physicians • Emergency medicine (ER) physicians • A surgeon Between November and December 2013, each of the 10 participants completed 5 phone in-depth interviews (baseline and 4 follow-up interviews) and were asked to complete 8 search tasks (2 prior to each follow-up interview; customized for each specialty). Participants completed response forms detailing their experience with each task, which were reviewed during interviews. Each interview was 30 minutes in length. Participants spontaneously described an ideal knowledge access tool that would address their current challenges and unmet needs. The Results The majority of participants reported being comfortable using ClinicalKey, satisfied with their experience, and pleased with the value provided by ClinicalKey after 2 months. Physicians reported good understanding and appreciation of ClinicalKey potential, which was considered more valuable than UpToDate for many important tasks. The follow-up interviews provided useful insight into the application of ClinicalKey to successfully address physicians’ unmet needs. ClinicalKey was found to be especially useful for tasks related to background information searching. “...ClinicalKey is the best combination of Epocrates, UpToDate, and PubMed…” – Emergency Medicine Physician Michael Russell, MD, Chief Clinical Informatics Officer The differentiator for ClinicalKey is that it has a direct link to the latest literature, compared with the UpToDate consolidated summaries that are only updated every year or so.” 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Rating scale 1 = not at all satisfied 7 = extremely satisfied 5.42 Overall Satisfaction With ClinicalKey Levelofsatisfaction Average Level of Satisfaction With ClinicalKey (Across 4 Follow-up Interviews) Emergency Medicine “I went straight to the First Consult option that I had...very simple and very easy.” Internal Medicine “I was very satisfied.
