COLD HOT NetApp IT’s Tiered Archive Approach for Active IQ NetApp AutoSupport® technology proactively monitors the health of NetApp systems installed at customer’s location and provides 24/7 actionable intelligence to optimize their storage environment. The amount of data received back to NetApp doubles approximately every 16 months. To manage the swelling waves of data to archive, NetApp IT sought a more flexible solution. DATA POINTS PER DAY INSTALLED BASE TIERS DEFINED Any data older than 12 months is cold. Optimized for cost savings and simplicity. Data that is 6 to 12 months old is warm. Optimized for performance and cost savings. Any data up to 6 months old is hot. Optimized for performance and efficiency. STORAGE CAPACITY The IT Challenge NetApp expanded its one-tier system by adding an archive tier for “cold” data and a more responsive tier for “hot” data. All-flash performance with deduplication and compression technology reduces the overall space demands by 66%—even for the tier of hot data. NetApp IT copied anything older than a year from the data lake into NetApp StorageGRID, and reduced server licensing costs by at least 40%. NetApp StorageGRID also gives operation teams less to worry about by allowing the team to reduce every 100 nodes to only 33 nodes. REDUCTION IN LICENSING COST LESS SPACE OCCUPIED IN OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY PRODUCTS USED Multi-tier solutions are often built on servers, resulting in a huge footprint and a lot of licensing. Avoiding this potentially wasteful approach, IT completely decoupled storage from servers, so that data movement between tiers will not use server CPU cycles. This approach, along with NetApp products, achieves a solution that saves space and money compared to any other multi-tier solution.
