PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS
OF THE DIFFERENT
REGIONS OF EM WAVES
Mrs. Nelsie A. Rivera
SHARING IS CARING
Directions: Each group will be given
reading materials to answer the question
assign to each group. You have 5 minutes
to prepare for your presentation. Shout a
yell once done.
• Radio is very widely used in modern
technology, in radio communication, radar,
radio navigation, remote control, remote
sensing and other applications.
• They are generated by an electronic device
called a transmitter connected to an
antenna which radiates the waves, and
received by a radio receiver connected to
another antenna.
Can you name another use of
Radio waves?
Microwaves are now being widely used in numerous
medical applications. Some of these include:
• Cardiology-deals with the disorders of the heart
• Oncology-treating cancer
• Rhizotomy – minimal invasive surgical procedure
• Cosmetic treatments
• Gynecology
• Dental treatments
• Otolaryngology- focus on the ears, nose and throat
• Ophthalmology
• Microwaves cause heating. This property has been
harnessed to create targeted dielectric thermal
desiccation of human tissue. This process is referred to
as microwave ablation.
Bluetooth
• It uses short-range microwave signals to
connect two devices, thus eliminating the
need to use unsightly cables and wires. It
uses a technique known as spread
spectrum frequency hopping in which
signals rapidly change carriers over many
different frequency channels.
• The sequence in which this is done is
usually random but known to both
receiver and transmitter. It eliminates any
possibility of interference with any other
device.
Household appliances such as heat
lamps and toasters use IR radiation to
transmit heat, as do industrial heaters
such as those used for drying and
curing materials.
 Incandescent bulbs convert only
about 10 percent of their electrical
energy input into visible light energy,
while the other 90 percent is converted
to infrared radiation, according to
the Environmental Protection Agency
The therapeutic effects of heat
• Infrared radiation can promote local blood
circulation and reduce muscle tension.
Examples of traditional medical applications
of infrared radiation include the relief of
muscle pain and tension, as well as the
treatment of autoimmune diseases or
wound-healing disorders.
• However, the question of whether it is
sensible to treat an illness or complaint with
heat, or whether it may in fact be harmful to
do so, must always be assessed by a doctor
on a case-by-case basis.
Backlighting –
UV lamps provide
backlighting to the
avionics and aerospace
industry, providing
reliable lighting in
airplane cabins and
cockpits.
UV curing
– used in many
manufacturing
applications, UV lamps
for curing of inks,
coatings and finishes
provides a strengthened
outer uses for uv lightter
coating.
Tanning
– UV lamps are the
core technology in
tanning salons, offering
clientele a way to enjoy
a sun-kissed look from
man-made technology.
Germicidal
– UVC germicidal lamps
are designed to
replicate UVC radiation
which is proven to have
immense sterilization
and disinfection
properties.
• Exposure to high radiation levels can
have a range of effects, such as
vomiting, bleeding, fainting, hair loss,
and the loss of skin and hair.
• Miscarriage for pregnant woman
• Mammography
• A mammogram is another very common
application for the x-ray and is requested
for patients who want to get tested for
abnormal growths in the breast.
Mammograms use x-rays to capture
images of what’s inside the breasts. It is
used to detect abnormal growths so a
determination can be made if further
testing is necessary. Mammograms have
drastically reduced deaths associated with
breast cancer since 1990 because it allows
for early diagnosis.
•The extremely high energy of
gamma rays allows them to
penetrate just about
anything. They can even pass
through bones and teeth.
•This makes gamma rays very
dangerous. They can destroy
living cells, produce gene
mutations, and cause cancer.
I AM ENGAGED:
Directions: THUMBS UP if the Statement is TRUE
and THUMBS DOWN if the statement is FALSE
1. Radio
Broadcasting is
the correct
application of
radio waves.
2. Low frequency is
suitable for
communication
over great distances
3. Remotes uses
microwaves
4. Diagnosis of bone
fracture is
considered as the
application of
infrared waves
5. UV light kills
bacteria and viruses
thru its germicidal
effect

Editor's Notes

  1. Did you know that Bluetooth and your microwave oven share the same frequency range on the spectrum? Both operate at around 2.4 and 2.48 GHz. It is for this reason that Bluetooth is classified as a microwave.
