Agriculture is another
word for farming. It
includes both growing and
harvesting crops and
raising animal or livestock.
Agriculture provides the
food and many raw
materials that humans
need to survive.
3. Agriculture In India
Agriculture plays a vital
role in the Indian
economy. Over 70 per
cent of the rural
households depend on
agriculture. Agriculture is
an important sector of
Indian economy as it
contributes about 17%
to the total GDP and
provides employment
to over 60% of the
population.
4. Cropping Seasons
We grow two types of crops
Kharif and Rabi
The Kharif season in India starts in
June and ends in October. Some
important Kharif crops are – Rice ,
Maize , Millet , Jute , Cotton etc.
The Rabi season in India starts in
mid-November and harvest in
April/May.Some important Rabi
crops are – Barley , Oilseeds ,
Wheat , Gram etc.
5. Cash crop and Food crop
Cash Crops are the type of crops that are grown
for trading. Cash crops act as raw materials for
the industrial direct consumer products.
For Example- Raghu grows Sugarcane on his
field to sell in the market because Cash crops act
as raw materials for the industrial direct consumer
products.
Food Crops are the crops that are grown to feed
the human population. There are a number of
food crops grown in the country.
For Example – Vivek grows wheat on his farm for
self- consumption.

7. LIFESTYLE OF INDIA AND USA FARMERS
Indian farming is labour intensive and they use traditional methods
of farming is used, where as in USA, farmers use machine and
chemicals for growing crops. There are many problem face by the
farmers those are –
1. Many insects also damage the crops.
2. Heavy rainfall can also damage the crops.
3. Some soil are damaged.
4. Strong wind also harm some crops.
5. Crops can also die by the chemicals used for growing crops.
