5 Different Food Groups
 A balanced diet is one which gives your body the nutrients needed to function properly. It is
made up of five different food groups. This includes:
 Carbohydrates: This group contains starchy foods such as rice, pasta, potatoes, bread and many
others. Carbohydrates give us energy, calcium and B vitamins. A healthy diet would include 3-5
servings of carbohydrate a day spread out throughout the day including snacks, every meal.
 Protein: This group contains meat, fish, eggs. This gives us protein, iron and some other
minerals and vitamins. This helps the body to grow and repair itself. Meat is a great source of
iron.
 Dairy: This group contains milk, yoghurt, milkshakes, cheese and many others. These foods
contain protein and calcium and some vitamins like B12, vitamin A, vitamin D. Dairy products
help to keep your bones and teeth healthy.
 Fruit and vegetables: This group includes fresh as well as frozen, tinned, dried and
fruit/vegetable juices. These give you lots of vitamins and chemicals called antioxidants which
keep you healthy. They also contain fibre to keep your digestive system healthy.
 Fats and sugars: This group contains butter, margarine, cooking oils, cream, chocolate, crisps,
sweets, cakes and many more. These foods give us a lot of energy(calories) but not many
nutrients.
Why a balanced diet is important
 A balanced diet is important because your organs and tissues need proper nutrition to
function effectively.
 Without good nutrition your body is more prone to disease, infection, fatigue and poor
performance.
 Eating 5 fruits a day will help to balance your diet because it is a great source of
nutrition and fresh with natural sugar. They make tasty snacks!

lifestyle
 Prevents Disease- such as heart disease, strokes and diabetes. This is a long term
benefit of healthy living.
 Increased Energy- This is important because it helps to boost energy levels allowing
people to participate in more activities on a daily basis.
 Healthy Weight- Healthy lifestyle choices such as quit smoking, reducing alcohol
intake and eating a well balanced diet with high fruit and vegetables and all the
nutrients from the five food groups helps you to maintain a healthy weight.
 Good mental health – Eating well and exercising can help defend against
depression. By expanding your range of food choices and making smart lifestyle
decisions can help to improve your mood and a better outlook in your life.
Why exercise is important
 If you do not exercise, your muscles will become weak. Your heart and lungs will not
function properly and your joints will be stiff and easily injured. Inactivity is a high risk to
damage health.
 Exercising helps to prevent diseases as our bodies are built for moving and crave exercise.
Regular exercise is necessary for physical fitness and for good health. It helps to reduce
the risk of heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes and other diseases. It also
helps to increase confidence and improve appearance.
 Improving stamina for example cycling, walking helps to improve stamina because it trains
your body to become more efficient.
 Strengthens and tones by exercising with weights and other forms of resistance training
helps to develop your muscles, bones with increased strength. It helps improve self-
confidence especially with toned muscles.
 Exercise also enhances flexibility which means stretching exercises are a good posture.
This helps to keep your body limber so that you can bend, reach and twist. This helps to
reduce the chance of injury and improves balance and co-ordination.
 It helps to most importantly improve the quality of life!
Healthy diet tips
 The key to a healthy diet is to eat the right amount of calories for how active you are, so
that you can balance the energy which you consume with the energy you use. If you eat
or drink too much you could become overweight and if you eat or drink too little you
could become underweight.
 Eat a wide range of foods to ensure that you are getting a balanced diet and your body
is getting the right nutrients which it needs.
 It is recommended that men should have around 2500 calories a day and women
should have around 2000 calories a day.
 Basing meals on starchy carbohydrates should make up around just over one third of
the food which you eat such as potatoes, bread, rice, pasta or cereals.
 Choose wholegrain varieties as they contain more fibre.
 Exercise
 Eat lots of fruit and veg
 Cut down on fats and sugars and salt

 It is proven that people who do regular physical activity have
 Up to 35% have a lower risk of coronary heart disease and stroke
 Up to 50% have a lower risk of type 2 diabetes
 Up to 50% have a lower risk of colon cancer
 Up to 20% have a lower risk of breast cancer
 Up to 30% have a lower risk of early death
 Up to 30% have a lower risk of depression
 To stay healthy adults should try to be active daily and aim to achieve at least 150
minutes of physical activity over a week through a variety of different activities. This
can involve everyday life such as walking, cycling, or activities such as swimming
and many more.

  • 2. 5 Different Food Groups  A balanced diet is one which gives your body the nutrients needed to function properly. It is made up of five different food groups. This includes:  Carbohydrates: This group contains starchy foods such as rice, pasta, potatoes, bread and many others. Carbohydrates give us energy, calcium and B vitamins. A healthy diet would include 3-5 servings of carbohydrate a day spread out throughout the day including snacks, every meal.  Protein: This group contains meat, fish, eggs. This gives us protein, iron and some other minerals and vitamins. This helps the body to grow and repair itself. Meat is a great source of iron.  Dairy: This group contains milk, yoghurt, milkshakes, cheese and many others. These foods contain protein and calcium and some vitamins like B12, vitamin A, vitamin D. Dairy products help to keep your bones and teeth healthy.  Fruit and vegetables: This group includes fresh as well as frozen, tinned, dried and fruit/vegetable juices. These give you lots of vitamins and chemicals called antioxidants which keep you healthy. They also contain fibre to keep your digestive system healthy.  Fats and sugars: This group contains butter, margarine, cooking oils, cream, chocolate, crisps, sweets, cakes and many more. These foods give us a lot of energy(calories) but not many nutrients.

Why a balanced diet is important  A balanced diet is important because your organs and tissues need proper nutrition to function effectively.  Without good nutrition your body is more prone to disease, infection, fatigue and poor performance.  Eating 5 fruits a day will help to balance your diet because it is a great source of nutrition and fresh with natural sugar. They make tasty snacks!

Regular exercise is necessary for physical fitness and for good health. It helps to reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes and other diseases. It also helps to increase confidence and improve appearance.  Improving stamina for example cycling, walking helps to improve stamina because it trains your body to become more efficient.  Strengthens and tones by exercising with weights and other forms of resistance training helps to develop your muscles, bones with increased strength. It helps improve self- confidence especially with toned muscles.  Exercise also enhances flexibility which means stretching exercises are a good posture. This helps to keep your body limber so that you can bend, reach and twist. This can involve everyday life such as walking, cycling, or activities such as swimming and many more.
