DEFINITIONS:
A hypothesis is a tentative assumption drawn from
knowledge and theory which is used as a guide in the
investigation of other facts and theories that are yet
unknown
A set of assumptions that are yet to be prove either right or
wrong.
A hypothesis is a possible answer to a research question.
Testable predictions that what you expect to happen in a study.
It’s main function is to suggest new experiments and
observations.
FEATURES:
Brief
Testable
Valid
Explainable Facts
It must have an Objective
SIGNIFICANCE:
 Provides direction and tell what is relevant and what isn’t.
 It is a guide to thinking process and the process of discovery.
 It focuses on research, without it, research would be like a
random and aimless wandering.
 It places clear and specific goals before us.
 It serves the function of linking together related facts and
information and organizing them into one
comprehensible whole.
 It serves as a framework for drawing conclusion.
SOURCES OF HYPOTHESIS
General Culture
Scientific Theory
Personal Experience
Analogies
CHARACTERISTICS OF HYPOTHESIS
o A good hypothesis is an agreement with the observed facts.
o It doesn’t conflict with any law of nature.
o It is stated in a scientific and research like language, it is not an
ordinary statement.
o It is stated in simplest possible terms.
o It must be stated in final form.
TYPES OF HYPOTHESIS
Null Form
Alternative Form
Declarative Form
Question Form
Prediction Form
DIFFICULTIES IN FORMULATION OF HYPOTHESIS
Lack of knowledge and clarity of the area investigator choses to work
Lack of ability to make use of the theoretical framework logically
Lack of acquaintance with available research technique resulting in
failure to be able to phrase the hypothesis properly
Vagueness of the statement for example a course in ethics will make a
student more ethical adult.
