Maximizing Your Research Visibility and Impact: A Step-by-Step Guide
Session 3: Researcher Branding - Online CV/Profile
Enhancing the visibility and impact of research is crucial for disseminating knowledge
widely and making progress. While publishing high-quality papers in scientific
journals is an essential step, it is only half the journey toward receiving future impacts
and citations. To increase research visibility and impact, researchers need to expose
their research output to the widest possible audience by using the proper “Research
Tools”. It is important to note that the visibility of an article has a significant impact on
its citation count, rather than just the merit of the article. Although researchers spend
considerable time and effort writing their research for publication, they often stop their
work after publication. However, the dissemination and archiving of an article are
essential phases in the publication life cycle. This webinar series provides a step-by-
step guide on how the effective use of various research tools can help increase the
visibility and impact of researchers' published research, leading to an increase in
citations and improvement in university ranking.

High Impact Research
Don't forget, the quality of your work will always matter. Helping the world to be a better place is
essential to gain attention to your research work!
However, it is difficult to distinguish whether
high citations are due to quality or visibility
(Ale Ebrahim et al., 2014).

• To ensure output traceability consistently use the same
version of your name, including the same abbreviations,
throughout your academic career;
• Use a standardized institutional affiliation and address;
• Repeat key phrases in the abstract while writing
naturally;
• Assign keyword terms to the manuscript;

What is a Researcher Profile?
Research Visibility and Impact Center-(RVnIC)
©2023-2025 Dr. Nader Ale Ebrahim
A researcher profile is a unique place on
the internet that easily summarizes all of
your professional work. The profile
provides the world with easy access to a
summary of who you are as a professional
and your unique contributions to your
field. (The researcher profile is frequently neglected.)

Why Should I Care about My Online Profile?
Research Visibility and Impact Center-(RVnIC)
©2023-2025 Dr. Nader Ale Ebrahim
• An online author profile can distinguish your research from others and showcase
your scholarly contributions to the academic community.
• It is one of the first steps to increasing your research visibility and making it easier
for others to find and access your work.
• Having an online author profile allows other academics to search for your name and
see a list of your publications, citations, and impact of your work.
• An online author profile can help you connect with other researchers, discover new
funding opportunities, and advance your career.
• By maintaining an online author profile, you can demonstrate your expertise and
build your academic reputation, ultimately increasing your impact in your field.
Increased visibility => increased readership and findability => Many benefits!

1. Have a professional profile picture.
2. Distinguish yourself from other authors.
3. Describe your research in a brief summary.
4. Keep your profiles up-to-date. You won't get any benefits if you only signed
up an account with an incomplete profile.
5. Ensure your details and publication list are accurate.
6. List all of your research outputs.
7. Make sure it is public.
8. Avoid using jargon and complex terminology in your profile.
9. Provide a persistent link back to your work.
10. Think about the layout of your profile and don’t be afraid of using white
space.

ORCID provides a standard unique author identifier
that:
• Increases your research visibility
• Connects your research to you throughout your career
• Distinguishes you from other researchers with similar
names
• Minimizes the time you spend filling out forms when
submitting research for publication or applying for grants
• Is being required by major journal publishers and funding
organization.

international colleagues. Preferably, neither general terms (physics,

On-going Maintenance of your Google Scholar Profile
Research Visibility and Impact Center-(RVnIC)
©2023-2025 Dr. Nader Ale Ebrahim
60
By regularly maintaining and updating your Google Scholar profile, you can ensure that it
accurately reflects your scholarly work and helps you connect with others in your field.
Update your profile: Update your profile by adding a profile picture, biography, and contact
information to make it more personal and informative. Promote your profile by including a
link to it in your email signature, on your personal website, and on your social media profiles.
Keep your profile up-to-date: Regularly update your profile to reflect your most recent
publications and citations. To add a missing article to your profile, select 'Add articles' from
the menu and search for it. If the article is not available in Google Scholar, you can also 'Add
article manually'.
You can also delete articles not authored by you by selecting the articles you would like to
remove and then choosing the 'Delete' button. If the article checkboxes don't appear, sign in
to the Google account that you used to create your profile.
Updates: Choose between automatically updating articles and stopping automated updates
by selecting 'Menu', then 'Configure updates' to select your option.
Monitor your metrics: Regularly check your profile metrics, such as the number of citations,
h-index, and i10-index, to track the impact of your work and compare your performance to
others in your field.

• An additional type of profile for sharing your work online is your own
personal website.
• The main benefit of having your own website is that you have complete
control of your profile.
• You can use your website to showcase the usual contents of a profile
(your publications, your employment history, awards you have received,
etc.)
• But you can also customize your profile to showcase anything you feel is
missing from your other profiles.
• You can even start a blog to share your research with a wider audience!

Maximizing Your Research Visibility and Impact: A Step-by-Step Guide Session 3: Researcher Branding - Online CV/Profile

  • 2. Enhancing the visibility and impact of research is crucial for disseminating knowledge widely and making progress. While publishing high-quality papers in scientific journals is an essential step, it is only half the journey toward receiving future impacts and citations. To increase research visibility and impact, researchers need to expose their research output to the widest possible audience by using the proper “Research Tools”. It is important to note that the visibility of an article has a significant impact on its citation count, rather than just the merit of the article. Although researchers spend considerable time and effort writing their research for publication, they often stop their work after publication. However, the dissemination and archiving of an article are essential phases in the publication life cycle. This webinar series provides a step-by- step guide on how the effective use of various research tools can help increase the visibility and impact of researchers' published research, leading to an increase in citations and improvement in university ranking.
